I was in the middle of tweaking a completely different deck when i began watching this, but got so excited I had to start putting this together immediately
9:16 Yeaaaaaaah! I love callous bloodmage, dude! It's so versatile! Card draw, or tokens, or graveyard hate when you really need it! One of my favorite cards from that set!
I had an almost identical reaction to when Commander's Quarters made that mono-green storm deck. I had been running that deck for months already before he made the video, and now I swap playmats when playing it because my main mat is a Commander's Quarters mat, and if people see Nylea, and a CQ playmat, they immediately know I'm playing the storm version. :(
I think creatures with Cycling--especially Street Wraith--are really cool with Extus, since you can put them in your graveyard before casting/copying an instant or sorcery.
8:49, you seem to imply that Merchant of the Vale works like Cathartic reunion, that isn't true. Discarding a card is not an additional cost on Haggle, so we won't be able to get back the creature we discard.
Magecraft Extus and Blood Avatar are two wildly different decks, and I personally found the Magecraft build to be more interesting and less resource-intensive by constantly generating value rather than consuming it. Here's an argument for Storm-Kiln Artist though, it goes infinite with Fury Storm so long as you have cast Extus a single time, the copy of Fury Storm can target the original and then boom, that's a loop. Once you have infinite treasures just sac Extus and Awaken the Blood Avatar ad nauseum. Another card I would recommend in the deck is Living Lightning, since it recurs an instant or sorcery out of the graveyard on death it allows you to more easily set up creature - spell loops, especially if you are doubling up it's death riggers with Teysa Karlov.
I think the average is focused more on the blood avatar. Aventure Extus is very interesting and unique and might not want the same base as a blood avatar deck
Fallen Ideal is a great aura enchant sac outlet for Extus too. Because it gives flying + his double strike you can use it to surprise one-shot opponents with commander damage
Personally I run storm-kiln artist with chain of smog to create an arbitrary amount of treasures and use to repeatedly cast awaken the blood avatar, or pair smog with professor onyx for arbitrary life loss and life gain. I also use worldgorger dragon and animate dead to repeatedly flicker my lands to cast awaken the blood avatar. A cool synergy with extus is azra oddsmaker, you go to combat and the oddsmaker triggers, you discard a card then choose extus as your creature and when he gets in for damage you draw 4 cards and more than likely get the card discarded back to hand. Extus is a very versatile and resilient threat.
A card I've really enjoyed with Extus is Azra Oddsmaker. The doublestrike means you can get 2x the cards and you can often recur the creature you discarded to the ability.
Sneak Attack, tutors for Sneak Attack and loads of big demons and Dragons is the most fun you can have with this guy. Aristocrats is done better by so many other commanders.
A fun combo I have been doing with Extus is Dockside for at least 6 Treasures, Extus, and Worthy Cause. Sacing Dockside to Worthy Cause and paying it's buyback will net you 1 mana. Do this until you have an arbitrarily large amount of mana. Sac Extus to Worthy Cause then cast Blood Avatar 1,000 times swing and win.
Fun trick I've seen in Jeskai decks is to clone Dockside, hit the clone with Fractured Identity, and then flicker Dockside as often as possible. It's just *mean*. Fortunately Extus lacks blue, or there'd be carnage everywhere.
Buyback is 2 so together would cost 3 for worthy cause no? So if you want to do this all in one turn you might need 7 treasures? 🤷🏾♂️ maybe I’m not seeing something I need to
@@Y0kAiS say you have 6 Treasures. Spend 3 for Worthy Cause with Buyback sacrificing Dockside. Extus will trigger letting you put Dockside back into your hand. You now have 3 Treasures. Spend 2 for Dockside gaining 6. You are now at seven Treasures and can repeat this process to get an unnecessarily large number of Treasures. Then, cast Worthy Cause sacrificing Extus. Return him to your Command Zone. Cast Awaken the Blood Avatar as many times as you want with the Treasures. Then declare attacks with the tokens created. Their ability will trigger killing each of your opponents.
Creatures that discard themselves are super useful. Skinbrand goblin into any pump spell and then skinbrand again to slap 4+ power on a double strike commander out of nowhere feels good.
dark ritual is pretty good for getting back instant speed tricks like opposition agent and lilliana's stand bearer, it gives players a sense of security to play wraths and big draw spells when they see you, and everyone else practically tapped out.
A friend built around Awaken the Blood Avatar, and it was so hard to interact with having a Sorcery in the command zone, that it was not a very enjoyable experience. This commander is sadly on my "high salt" list.
But its not that good of a sorcery. Like all it does is make a 3 6 an make everyone sac a creature. Some other commanders have devastating etbs way harsher than this. I dont think its so much harder to interact with as a sorcery like now your force of negation hits a commander. If your a creature deck it could be annoying but commander tax applies to the sorcery as well so i dont see it as uninteractive or salt inducing.
One of the thing which really annoys me with this commander is that there is an ‘Oriq’ spell in blue! (Tempted by the Oriq). I try to keep a bit of the theme into my decks and I can’t do it for this one 😖
Yes Joey! Do Chatterfang! @Brad Mowell I dont think he will for a while until there are enough decks with Chatterfang on edhrec so the average deck stabilizes. The average is changing a lot, I keep looking and finding cool new cards for chatterfange each day.
take two adventure creatures X and Y, with their adventure instants/sorceries being X1 and Y1 1. cast X1, send it on adventure 2. cast X from adventure, then sacrifice it for value 3. cast Y1, send it on adventure, magecraft on extus brings back X to your hand 4. cast Y from adventure, then sacrifice it for value 5. cast X1, send it on adventure, magecraft on extus brings back Y to your hand 6. repeat steps 2-5 until you zulaport cutthroat your opponents to death
I’ve found the best way to build ‘Extus’ is to really build an Awaken the Blood Avatar deck. Ignore Extus and his magecraft entirely and go full in on a tokens aristocrats deck. I have a deck with him and I can’t remember a single time I’ve ever cast the front side.
I know this was posted like 2 years ago, but this one comment has given me more great ideas for my Extus // Blood Avatar deck than any of the dozen or so videos I have watched. Hats off to you sir!
When it comes to having only 1 foretell card i feel like having 1 is fine cus players regularly forget about stuff that is on the board. I feel like they are likley to forget tthat you have a face down card ready to go. But rise of the dreadmorne dont seem to fit in this deck. I run jus that 1 in my esper zombies an ill foretell it early an it gets forgotten about most of the time
Aristocrats decks that rely on their commander are too wobbly. You're already trying to build an engine out of multiple cards, and adding another is just... Eh. Aristocrats plays low to the ground, like you said, so I'm not particularly interested in casting Extus for six. I just don't think aristocrats decks are well served by focusing on the commander too hard. I vehemently disagree with the adventure cards because unless Extus is down they are bad. Just bad. Same with the discard as a cost draw spells. If Extus isn't down you'd be much better served with a Sign in Blood or Night's Whisper. A card that is bad unless my commander is on the board just isn't worth it if you're really trying to push an aristocrats list. Based on all that and much more I have this Extus list that doesn't rely on either side of Extus, but can abuse both, complete with primer: www.moxfield.com/decks/To0SFYHexU-oFdNSBD1dbA

We gotta have the puns, otherwise we'd go through an Extusential crisis ;)

The professor and merfolk 😉
PleasantKenobi and Death & Taxes
Jimmy Wong and Red

this isn't a commander i would want to build (either side) but damn that synergy with Tormenting Voice and co. is so so sweet
Shhh don’t tell everyone about the adventures synergy with Extus!!
Adventure mechanic is great if you're building around the front face.

What a great deck! Nice!

In fact, I made an Extus cycling deck and it's quite decent. And nobody expects it!

But it is a cost to the creature's activated ability ;)

So I’m still somewhat confused on the concept of Adventure Creatures and engine that is made from them. Could someone explain it again?
Basically, it's a spell card that extus can bring back from the graveyard
take two adventure creatures X and Y, with their adventure instants/sorceries being X1 and Y1
1. cast X1, send it on adventure
2. cast X from adventure, then sacrifice it for value
