  • Some playing with the "missile at 30K dip + 2 extra tanks". I'm not a great player as some people have been able to score millions... but at least this should give you the idea of the advanced BattleZone gameplay. And what a great classic it is!

Amazing quality for 1980. And many versions had a periscope interface where you pressed your face against a scope. This had the effect of eliminating the real world from your vision and was very immersive.

You are right , I use to play the periscope one - I believe the color was red ,which I thought looked cool , instead of green, I spent a lot of cash on this game at the Arcade . then I got the Atari 2600 and bought the Battlezone for that , it was even better.

@@FL-BEACH-MAN i remember the periscope one too where it had 1 step attached to it!!! as a kid i loved getting up on that big step and looking into the eyes thing. it was at our bowling alley down the hill from my house in my Wisconsin hometown. Sadly the bowling alley did not have it there long as compared to other arcade games in that period of the mid 80s. I think they had it for 2 years at most. Whereas other arcade games were there for over 5 years. I always wondered the name of this game and today i was at an 80s arcade place in Madison for the first time. I asked the owner and he knew the name of it, then i googled it, and came here to YT.

Ahh the fond memories of playing this in my local leisure centre here in Milton Keynes, back in the early eighties.
My top score was 3,467,000 - I am unsure how long I stood at that machine, but I hogged it all day, just for one 20p piece, pissing all the other people off, as I would not finish.
One glitch in the game allows you to take shots at the saucers for as long as you like, by allowing a missile to go past you, you then quickly, reverse and turn at the same time, keeping the missile behind you, stops the tanks from ever appearing.
I did that for an hour.
Finally I gave up with still, 3 tanks left, to a little kid who got my score to that figure above, but I entered my initials though PEP.
BUT a week later some sod had beaten my score on the machine, HOW???
Later found out that if you hit the machine in a certain place, it could corrupt the circuit boards scoring system, as the high score showed over 20 million which is impossible.
As you can imagine I was pretty pissed off, seeing that.
Also I was 2nd on the Xbox Live arcade version on classic mode (KingPepper).
No idea where I am now on there, as I don't have Xbox Live any more.

That was an incredible game, first I think with 3D graphics and incredibly immersive. I used to spend hours on it and eventually to a point where I'd occasionally cycle it through so many levels it went back to Level One. That used to take well over an hour with a score in 7 figures and required a shower afterward. Incredibly advanced for the time as evidenced by the US Army adopting it as a tank training simulator.

Wikipedia says the periscope version of this game is more common, but in my experience it was the smaller, no-periscope version I encountered most. How about y'all?

I think the smaller version was way more common. Never saw the periscope version myself.

Sir your good at that game. Your high score is around the same as mine. Does anyone know of anybody who could flick a 2pence up these machines, I did back in the day and got 5 credits for 2p. How was it done. You placed the 2p in your fingers and put it in the eject slot at the bottom with the metal flap and flicked it back up and it went into the money box and gave you credits. Down side to me doing this was I was barred from every amusement arcade in my home town of Paisley. Fun times. Battle zone and the song I won’t let you down by PHD bring back so many memories.

Back in 1984 a local pizza/arcade was going out of business, and selling all of their games. Most were selling for $275 each. I only had enough cash at the time to buy just one machine. I was torn between Battlezone (1980), or Gottlieb's Haunted House pinball machine (1982). I ended up getting Battlezone because a friend that worked on pinball machines told me that
Haunted House was notorious for having trouble, and they were a pain to work on. Both machines were in perfect condition because they were both still only a few year old. In 1986 I thought of moving out of state and decided to sell my Battlezone and Midway's Space Invaders so I ran an add in my local newspaper, this was way before Ebay, Craig's List, etc.
The first person that responded to the add bought both right on the spot for $300 each. I have kicked myself several times since for selling Battlezone. I have since found another Space Invaders, but still hoping to find another Battlezone. I'd be lucky to find one now for 10 times that price in poor condition.

This is very well played. It's hard to last long, compared to the Atari 2600 version. But this graphics were revolutionary at the time.

That Atari 2600 version is completely different. I had that too when I was a kid. Cool game but the gameplay was nothing like the arcade. Unfortunately some of those 2600 conversions weren't that great.

My highest score in this game (at the arcade) was 872,000. It took me 2 1/2 hrs.

    • @detonator2112
      @detonator2112  10 лет назад +4

That's a great score. I recently played 354.000. There's that one missile that goes sideways just before "arriving home". That always kills me. I guess I could learn the trick hiding behind the obstacles but I never played with that method.
