    This might be the best turkey ammo review I’ve ever seen. The one consistency I see between all the turkey ammo review videos is that magnum blend and long-beard XR are the top dogs.

    For as long as I’ve hunted turkey, I’ve used 2 3/4” 12 gauge 4,5, or 6 shot lead pheasant loads for turkey and they’ve worked just fine. Call them within 30 yards and you don’t need tungsten, copper plated, etc. More than half the fun is calling them in close.

    • @waylonlegend4603
      @waylonlegend4603 Год назад +2

      Exactly. Hearing that gobble come closer is the whole reason I’m there. Let them come in close.

      That's what my uncle's and grandpa taught me to use rem long range 2 3/4 1 1/4 oz 4,5,6 and have used them for years don't need a 10 dollar shell to kill a turkey

    • @mattsweet7918
      @mattsweet7918 Год назад +2

      You’ve got that right. Call em in close and shoot straight. Don’t rely on a $10 shell to make up for lack of hunting skill and marksmenship.

    By far the best head to head comparison I’ve seen to date. If nothing else it shows there ain’t much difference from shell to shell in modern turkey ammo but the added amount of shot per shell you get by going to a tss load all the while gaining or at minimum equaling the load weight of comparable lead or heavier then lead/tungsten alloys, definitely isn’t a gimmick. Not to mention that tss really shines in the smaller gauges like 20ga and 410 bore. It now gives youth hunters, smaller women hunters and or handicapped hunters a viable option for recoil management as compared to 3” or 3.5” 12ga magnums that most hunters considered mandatory to ethically kill a long beard prior. They can now shoot smaller bore shotguns and confidently make kills out to 40 yards easily never noticing or thinking about what punishment awaits that trigger pull and where as they might otherwise become gun shy or worse, give turkey hunting/shooting firearms up completely, they now can add to our tradition and keep the sport alive and growing. I gotta ask. How do u like the tss from Federal. Is it worth it. I shoot a Benelli SBE2 and usually shoot Magnum Blend 3.5” shells. Should I try the stuff

    • @CalebRyan-TNCx
      @CalebRyan-TNCx  6 лет назад

      George Cesarini agree with you 100% about the TSS. Its a good thing if people use it correctly. Overall the Federal TSS did well. I would recommend.

    Great evaluation. May I suggest a change for the next test, standardize the target if possible. The orange caldwell target doesn't exaggerate the hits the same way the black back targets do. All in all the best turkey ammo test out there.

    Fantastic video. The discussion seems to always head down the path of "every gun is different". But they aren't that different and a good shell is a good shell for the most part. It's great to be able to learn from a video like this and save some money as well as shoulder meat. Thank you!

    Very good info and video! I shoot a Stoeger m3000, what I'm doing this year is keeping a 3rd degree Chambered and tss ghost loaded on the shell lifter. If a bird hangs up past 40 all I have to do is slowly reach up and eject the 3rd degree and the tss is ready to quietly hop in and go to work

    Great review but there is one thing that I would add. Pattern density is important of course but it is only half the story. You also need penetration. I don't care what you do to lead shot to make it pattern better it still penetrates like lead. The Longbeard shells are a really neat innovation that out pattern any lead shells I have ever seen. But even if a Longbeard number 6 will throw an acceptable pattern to 50 yards or further that doesn't mean I would trust a lead 6 pellet to consistently penetrate deep enough at those distances. That is where TSS shot shines. Not only will it give you the pattern density at those distances but it will still just absolutely shred a turkeys head and neck as well.

My only criticism would be that you should have done one shot in the 5-10 yard range. It's the one range where the I think the Longbeard looses a step to loads like the 3rd Degree. Great job again.

    Great review! I spent $100’s on ammo and bought just about every load available on the market back in the mid 90’s to try out of my 10 gauge. Every load that patterned best are long discontinued. Remington 2 1/4 oz #6’s outshot every target you tried with a Cheap jelly head Choke. Imagine all three of your longbeard groups Packed together ...that what it looked like at 40 yards in my gun with the Remington 6’s! Pretty depressing as it’s been discontinued for approx 20 years. I’ve resorted to federal grand slam and Winchester 2oz #5’s. Both have killed turkeys out to 87 yards but the groups are not nearly impressive. I picked up a patternmaster.695” the other day and will have to retest the half a dozen option left on the market and probably start reloading my my obsolete 10 gauge browning turkey gun.

  • @Manbunmen65

    I shoot a Remington 11-87 Shurshot sportsman 12 gauge with the Remington wing master HD choke provided . I got the gun when they first came out and did my own testing at 40 yards with the Magnum blend 3.5 inch, hevi-13 in #4 and #5 3 inch, Remington wing master HD in 3.5 and 3 inch #4( load discontinued) I had enough shells to test and over the last ten plus years have shot almost all the rest killing many turkeys with all of them. Now after I initially shot the patterns I never tested again. It wasn't until years later a huge tom hung up and I didn't shoot because I thought it too far. The next morning it bugged me, so I shot the hevi-13 and magnum blend and wing master both 4s at 70 yards. The average was 3-4 hits with the wing master 3.5 4s, can't remember the count on the blend but it wasn't blowing me away and up to 9 killing hits with the Hevi-13 4s. My take from all this is my gun didn't pattern 3.5 inch shells any better than the 3's. The wing master was a deadly ass round, but the 3 inch Hevi did better than the Remi did with a 3.5. The 3.5 magnum blend is devastating and the pattern was good at 40, but get farther and it spread considerably. I don't know if I trust 7 shot at 70 yards if that's all that ends up hitting. But I like the Hevi 4s better at longer range they put them down with authority. I know there's newer stuff out there, but I just ordered a new batch of shells online...both boxes are Hevi-13 3 inch 4s they are wicked.

I shoot the XR Longbeards 3" #5's. Remington 870 21" barrel with Indian Creek .665. This is one deadly combination!! Only thing I've ever liked better was Winchester Extended Range. Hated to see that go!!! Jus wondered if you have ever tried any Kent TK7 Penetrator loads??

    This video is great. I say use what ammo & choke tube work best for you in a turkey hunting situation.. They all kill turkeys when used properly.. My Personal turkey hunting gun setup consist of a Remington Sp10 using Federal Mag Shok 10ga 2oz #5's with a Primo's JellyHead choke tube & it's light out devastating on turkey..

      Pa Turkey Hunter I hear the browning 10 is solid after an aftermarket spring kit. I don't use the SP10 for turkey, I only bowhunt for them but the the 10 can bring the noise for geese!

      PezMan I feel your pain.. I couldn't belive Remington discontinued the Sp10.. My Sp10 is deadly on Turkey's & I'm looking forward to using my new Browning Gold 10ga on geese this Sept season here in Pa.. Both shoot great..

    Federal made the flite control flex wad in their black cloud duck and goose loads too and they work great. I had a chance to try em out this past duck and goose season here in TN.

    You should be shooting the same targets for all. The longboards we're shot onto targets that have more paint chipping, and shows a lot more dense pattern. (Even though I am a fan of longboards)

    I'll be honest...my Mossberg 935 with Longbeard XR choke tube, topped off with a Weaver Kasapa Turkey plex scope and Longbeard Xr 3 1/2" no. 5's shoot and pattern at 50 yards like yours does at 20 yards. I like em tight not opened up.

    Great video I loved the federal heavyweights in 20 guage hate they discontinued them in favor of the tss. The long beards do well also.

    Do you think the mossberg maverick 88 12gauge with a smooth bore barrel will be good for turkey hunting they only run around 200dollars

      @@CalebRyan-TNCx I'm very intrested in the new federal TSS. I've taken birds out at 70 yd with the Winchester long beard XR but that number 9 shot seems like it would be very interesting

    Honestly you should have a much better pattern than that with the TSS. If you opened your choke constriction up a little bit the TSS would do even better than what it did.

    Just shot my bird yesterday with a 3” Winchester long beard xr #4 at 40-45 yards. Dropped him with no flop. (My choke is the win long beard from Winchester at .700 constriction) if you want to shoot #6 go with the .665 constriction.

    Great video but since longbeards usually shoot different than other loads you may need to re-zero for all the rounds to get the most accurate results. Again great video.

    Good informative video. Can’t beat the LongbeardXRs for the money. Before they came out, I shot Hevi simply because no lead load could throw a pattern half as good. If a person wants to shoot lead, shoot LongbeardXRs or nothing! I test as much as I can. Base most of my comparisons at 40 yards counting hits in a 10” and 20” circle. I still shoot Hevi because the numbers are almost identical to LongbeardXR numbers in the same shot size. I’m curious if you’ve tested any out of a Mossberg 835 or 935? Some say they throw better patterns out of their overbored barrels and I’m inclined to believe it. Automatics seem to pattern better than their pump counterparts, wondering if you have seen anything to confirm or conflict. Also, have you tested any of the new Apex tungsten loads?

    That's 1.2 mill in tss and other ammo lol cool video I picked of a case for cheap of earlier 2000s may be even 98 99 of Remington nitro turkey 3" and its ok at 40 and less over 100 in 10" at 35 yards with mossberg full accusteel extended choke 930.....But I'm gonna go long beard in my 935 with the choke you have.
