    One thing Archicad need to fix is the ability to pin a particular element to multiple renovation statuses. That way it works better for the phases so that you don't have to duplicate so many elements and re-pin then to another phase. A similar problem occurs in options but maybe not as often.

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  3 года назад +3

      Yes, great point! Having that option to pin to multiple filters would certainly be nice for phase management. Having a side by side tool for renovation status, plus phases would be awesome.

    Hi, nice tutorial! Just a sidenote: Having followed the Graphisoft BIM manager program I wanted to mention that the people from Graphisoft itself discorage this method. The renovation tool is actualy designed for what it's named after 😊. Offcourse it works and its powerfull but it had some downsides too... The best way is to just make new layers and corresponding layercombinations and views, you just need to adjust the layer priority number so the elements don't intersect with eachother. Or make a new pln file. I think the modelcompare tool in Archicad doesn't handle the renovation method realy well, but this is even for me subject to test 😊.

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment! Interesting that GS avoids using it for this purpose. I see this tool as a way to show early design options quickly and easily, but not something to continue even into schematic design. It can work for individual spaces, but again I think the goal of using this method is to show options for presentation purposes, and then decide and move on with the design option selected. Definitely some downsides as you mention, but I think those come up when starting to push this too far beyond the initial simple function. Thanks for the comment! Test it out and let us know how it works for you! I still think it's easier than layers for a basic purpose, but I can also see how layers can be useful when the design options with reno start to fall apart. Demo is still an issue:?

    • @Rojarquitectura
      @Rojarquitectura 3 года назад

      This method was precisely what I was doing, using the layers combinations and layer priority number. However, for daily design, I founded that renovation tools were straightforward and helpful to set up different proposals.

    Thank you for the tutorial, sir John. This Renovation tool looks powerful. I wish Graphisoft changed the "pin" into something like "option-list" or "check-list" so we can apply some element to single or multiple Renovation Filter.
    I wonder if it possible to create a construction phases (scaffolding, crane, etc) with this Renovation tool?

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  3 года назад +1

      Yes that is a great comment. I agree having the option to pin multiples would be useful, but then it also becomes more to track and manage on the element level. A phase filter would certainly be useful!
      For logistics, items like scaffold and cranes will likely need their own layer (or simple logistics layer) anyway, but could then be pinned to specific phases. You'll likely want a layer combination to control visibility of the rest of the project elements as well for these phases, but I think the Reno filter and pinning to a certain stage can be useful. Interior temporary barricade plans can be useful with this type of method also.

    I use this method for new building concepts. Problems arise when we are working on a renovation project. Do you have any advice on managing demolition? In one concept we want to demolish different walls than in another.

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  3 года назад +2

      Hi Piotr, yes the demolition gets a little tricky when looking at different options, even with using layers it's difficult to work out. I think to get this to work, you must over-demo the entire space with the default demo phase, and then bring back parts relating to the new options. Not 100% ideal but a workaround for looking at the different new options... Thanks for the comment, I'll keep this question in the back of my mind as I look for ways to improve on this concept!

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  2 года назад

      Hi Marco. It is all in the saved view settings for each design option. Set the renovation status in the view settings, and that will filter the model based on what elements are assigned to each. You shouldn't have to even set the criteria for renovations, only the view options. Only downside of this is you can't list all 3 options under the same schedule, but you can use 1 schedule, with 3 different saved views for each design option. Good luck!

    Very helpful John. What do you think about using a layer system for renovation options instead of your method? Any cons / pros one should be aware of?

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  3 года назад +3

      Hi Emre. Great question, a layer system can work for that purpose, but you'll likely have to create multiple layers for each option in that case. The Renovation Options as shown using the pinning function, is an easy way to control that visibility without ever having to change a layer of an element, so I think for that reason it's a little cleaner. I'm sure many out there are using layers for this purpose, but I'd recommend to test the Renovation method and see how you like it! If you are scheduling elements, it's important to set the correct renovation filter based on which one you want to report. One downside, is I don't believe it's possible to list multiple options of pinned elements, at the same time within a schedule.. Thanks for the comment and question!

    • @emresenoglu
      @emresenoglu 3 года назад +1

      @@CONTRABIM Well, until now, I've been one of those people, however I will definitely try your method out in the next project and see how it works out. The layer system has plenty of setbacks - but I actually use a single layer for one option, so in total 3 layers for 3 options. As you can imagine, this results in all sorts of elements being put in a single layer - walls, objects, etc. However, when the project is in a beginning phase, this is okay as my primary need is to be able to easily switch between options at this stage. The schedule issue is present with the layers as well (if I understood your description correctly) so there's not much to do about that. And thank you for your detailed answer!

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  3 года назад +1

      @@emresenoglu Yes that all makes a lot of sense. With the layers you can have a saved schedule with all 3 turned on, so that's how you could list them all at once and compare side by side so to speak. I think you'll find it's easier to pin elements to the renovation filter, than assigning them to the single layers! Try it out and let me know what you think! For the longest time I used layers for this as well, until I realized that little "pin" button actually does something special:)

    • @CONTRABIM

      When exploring different options and showing the zones on the floorplan, you'll likely want to pin those effected to their related filter as well as the walls that define them in the option. This way you can toggle between option 1 & 2 and walls and zones will adjust. Great question thanks!

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  2 года назад +1

      Hi Irem! Thanks for the question. So the thing with the PIN function, is that elements will only show up on that specific renovation filter. The "Show All Items" is just a name of a filter, that doesn't necessarily show everything that is pinned. Similarly, if you pin items to that renovation, they will only show on that renovation. I hope that makes sense... Pinning only allows visibility on that specific filter. Thanks!

    • @CONTRABIM

      Sometimes if you are doing a partial demo, it may be best to split the roof to indicate what section gets removed. You could also try the opening tool, but I don't believe it functions quite right with the roof tool. If you need to assign a large portion of a project to demo, perhaps the marquee would work. Or perhaps setting the entire portion to a specific layer for demo could also be useful in your case.

    • @CONTRABIM
      @CONTRABIM  Год назад

      I wish! The Show All Elements, is just a regular filter that typically has E/D/N turned on. It isn't anything special that turns on all pinned. I wish there was this option! So it's important to pay attention what content is pinned where, so you can unpin and have it turn on when needed.
