It's also great to shoot with a flash off the boot either with a cable or IR control, you can get really dramatic lighting effects from the top, beneath, behind, etc. and at the macro scale all of these direction are usually within arm's length.

I recently started to shoot macro with an old Minolta Rokkor PF 58mm f/1.4 that is inverted and mounted on my Olympus E-M1 MkI. Amazing results.
As a macro photographer i'll notice that some of your shots are very nice. Key secret in macro is that you need to spend a bit more time to find a good angle of a subject.
Not bad for a first effort @ 2X ;-) Some excellent advice from Micael Widell, as expected, but don't forget a flash diffuser if you want to avoid those specular highlights. It's even possible to fabricate a cone-shaped diffuser for that ring flash, with a bit of DIY expertise.
I adapt a lot of old Minolta MD glass on my Sony, since I started years ago shooting there. Yesterday I found and old Minolta macro bellows, and got great results using it with my Minolta 135mm.
I need some help ,I want to shoot a film but I need a camera, my budget is 500$ and I want a vintage look and I think I could get some good vintage lenses for cheap ....( and I'm used to collecting old film cameras soo if something had a familiar look will be amazing),I don't need 4k ,clean 1080p is more than enough..... I would love to hear your recommendations, it'll be appreciated
Good work, yes indeed macro photography in the field is not easy, but those were some nice shots! I'm happy to see a video about this topic! There is a lot of DIY involved in macro photography in general and in my opinion that's what makes it fun! The paper cone on the flash is a good idea as someone mentioned, also you can use baking/tracing paper or thin white plastic.
You shot your photos with the 15mm Loawa? (In your description). I didn't see quality glass results. I'm wondering why you chose that lens. Otherwise, I liked your friends input, and of course your efforts, as always.
In this episode i used the 60mm from brighten star, but I used the 15mm from laowa before yes, it's not a 2X macro lens if I remember correctly. and we both received the 60mm for review, thats why it was a good occasion for me to shoot with a 2X macro lens for the first time, but it's not a " choice".
Excellent photos and video and I don't just say that because you included my name in your list of patreons. ;-) Glad you and Michael got a chance to work together.
Thank you for the nice video Mathieu;) I am using a ring flash and Musou Black painted background, for my macro;) Mathieu thank you for suggestion for Musou black paint in one of your videos;) A guestion did anyone try Mamiya 645 macro 120mm f4 on 35mm full frame? Planning to buy it but don't know how it performs on macro with 35mm crop.
Dammmm... Anything done by Mathieu is in Macro level or X2 better (To say the least)! Having said that and knowing a little bit about Miceal Widell I can add a few secrets/alterantes, hopefully not hiring the sponsored agent. 1- Macro Lens ---- Laowa (Hisssssh) 2- Never use a ring flash. These LED flashes are too weak to illuminate adequately Have a great day and nicer weekend my friends.
Great job with the video and the photos! I think you did really great for someone who hasn't done a lot of macro photography.
Thanks so much!
I had a great teacher :)

What would I use if I wanted to use this lens on my fil cameras Minolta X-700 md mount or Canon A-1 FD mount?

great Idea !! i will try that
Great video Mathieu! This lens is for APSC or FULL FRAME sensors?
Mathieu gets all the good gear.

Excellent info! What would be a EXCELLENT MACRO LENS, for a Canon 90D with a (APS-C) ? I was thinking
Have you ever tried pin hole photo? I would love to know more about it and how to do good pictures
Yes I have, and having good pictures is not really the point of pinhole, but it's fun to try if your sensor is really clean :)

Sorry, somehow I missed the intro of the lens. I see it now. Your shots are better on second viewing.
Does this come in Sony E Mount? The amazon listing says so but there is not any for sale for Sony E Mount.
Mine is in sony E mount
So beautiful 😍

Amazing effects, I can't get that sharpness even after months of trying 😂
Really good photos, not easy with moving bugs and 1mm DOF 👍
Really ? I was here first 😜
Yes you are!
Amazing video
Glad you think so!
Good work! :)
Thanks!
I need a serious macro lens not a sigma mini wide it’s close focusing but nowhere near close enough
👍
