- Osaki in the southwest of Japan is known as a recycling town. With a population of around 12,000, the town recycles a remarkable 80 per cent of its waste, and was able to avoid building an incineration plant.
Ms. Kasumi Fujita moved to Osaki in 2021 to work with the municipality, business sector and local community to help prepare the town for a more sustainable future. In 2023, she was elected as the first female council member of Osaki. She shares what motivates her and the people of Osaki to recycle for the environment and the future.
I hope Kasumi gets elected to mayor at some point. This is a great example of community interaction and initiatives that have a positive outcome. We should all be following Osaki town's lead!
Though in Japan they are putting lot of efforts to recycle plastics, efforts are not seen to REDUCE generation of plastics scrap.
They should REFUSE to use the plastics as far as possible.
If usage of plastics is reduced, obviously scrap generation will reduce. Hence, the efforts required for recycling will reduce.
Comparatively this problem is very easy to tackle in country like India, where use of plastics and scrap generation itself is less.
Wow, very inspiring!
However, I agree with someone else who commented here...reduce the use of plastic at the same time. Do veggies need to be wrapped in plastic? Can you use cotton bags instead of plastic bags? Just some ideas.
Also, the title is misleading. 'Zero waste' would be something entirely different.
How they managae e waste?
