@@rainy4902 Honestly, the idea of "impossibly perfect utopian village is immediately destroyed by evil invader" is so ubiquitous. Even the trope of "woman is kidnapped and assaulted because she has some special power than the bad guys want"
No stone heart can withstand this amount of grief. This movie will grab human's soul in a sense everyone can understand and crush it, leaving nothing left.
I feel that “woof” in my soul. I never would have dreamed you’d tackle this movie and am mad that even with a third party buffer this movie got me to cry again. Not fair Maquia.
So when you said "This is so well written." I wanna say: It's written and directed by a woman named Mari Okada. She's considered one of the best writers in anime. She excels in making people cry. Her characters are nuanced and her dialog feels emotional and natural. Some of her most well known animated works are this movie, AnoHana: The Flower We Saw That Day, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, and O Maiden's in Your Savage Season (Which she also wrote the manga for) I recommend all of them if you just wanna cry for a bit.
“Fun fact” Mari Okada thought about her mother while writing this apparently she had a terrible relationship with her mother but when Mari Okada had her own child her entire perspective changed and this movie is written to reflect her feelings of what it means to be a mother.
I had no fucking clue what I was going into and now I need to watch this movie. Its about parenthood, at least in part, and I feel like I'm due for a good cry
i watched this movie while pregnant, and it made me cry so hard, ever since my daughter was born ive been an even bigger cry baby then that time, and ive resigned myself to never watching this movie again unless i want to be out of commission due to tears for a few hours XD (not the best idea with a toddler around)
About the cloth, yes, patterns and the way it is weaved can show a story or show the weaver's emotion while weaving it. Even here in the Philippines, a lot of traditional cloth weaved by ethnic groups are not just beautiful but are very much full of story to tell.
This is top 10 Movies period. Mari Okada is easily one of my favorite writers in anime period. So much so that I can immediately tell when I'm listening to her dialogue. She has this certain way of writing that immediately makes you fall in love with her characters. One of the things I love most about Maquia is the dueling depictions of motherhood between Maquia and Leilia. It's such a beautiful piece and I can't wait to see Okada's next feature.
Can you please explain the movie to me? Ive only just heard about this movie through this video and it looks really interesting but I honestly don't know what's going on through Danny's reaction
@@piffny6666 i really hope you go see because it's a really pretty movie but if you don't mind with spoilers, here we go: well, this blondes are actually a race that take a reaaaally long time to grow (like, they're young for more than what a human can live) and Maquia, who is an orphan, has her village attack by humans who wants their "immortality". They attack with this dragons and only Maquia and her friends survive (a boy and a girl). The girl (Maquia's friend) is taken to have the king's child (who he hopes to be like the mother but is not) and the boy just tries to save her. Maquia founds the baby who she adopt and the history go on from there (mostly)
I love this movie. Funny that I found it while looking up dandelions thinking it was a happy movie but instead of being happy I was trying not to cry in front of my aunt. This movie really made me think about the relationship between me and my mom.
I love this movie so much. Mari Okada creates beautiful stories! I remember reading about her and was surprised to learn her own mother tried to kill her. I know dark but coming in after watching Maquia, she wrote and directed a beautiful story about motherhood.

i hadnt seen this movie before but it does kinda remind be of a manga called Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, which is about an elf in a fantasy world set after the adventuring group she was apart of saved the world experiencing time differently from the rest of the people around her.
I get what you mean by not wanting to overdo it with the reactions, but I would absolutely watch an uncut version of your reactions. Not even just of this movie, anything where you find yourself reacting so often. Maybe as a patron bonus?
I told my friends for forever to watch this movie until the day I drug them all into a discord call and streamed it for them. About the time the third act started I noticed no one had said anything for a while and I went to look and everyone was muted. The second the credits started I went and said “well do you like it?” And when I tell you I heard sniffles and tears come up one by one as everyone was unmuted, it was glorious. Just imagine a discord call with like 10 people crying and me just sitting there saying “see, I told you so” 🤣
I haven’t watched this movie but even just watching this video, I was tearing up at some of the lines. Full on cried a couple times too… Honestly a couple of years ago I probably wouldn’t have cried, but for some reason I’ve become really quick to cry in the last year or two. So yeah there are tear stains on my sleeves now. Whoops 😅

its super interesting that Danny talks about this movie in conjunction to like Your Name and A Silent Voice. I know he joking refers to ASV as "torture porn" but shockingly, out of these 3, that one has always hit home the hardest for me? I think its because the subject matter for all of these movies is so different and despite being super heavy in their own ways, it depends on like which themes you resonate with most. ASV kills me bc its portrayal of being a mentally unstable teen is... like... so realistic, as someone whos lived that. As well as how much childhood bullying can affect you as you get older. Whereas Maquia def also made me sob, but that sense of like empathy I have for maquia is only theoretical, since I've never been a parent/parental figure. Anyway, great video as always!
Thanks to Tubi, which doesn't usually have stuff this good, I was able to see this movie. Absolutely one of my favorite movies ever, it just hits home as a mother so much. 💜💜💜 So well written, I just wish there was a novel form of it with more details like they did with Garden of Words. Wolf Children and the Deer King are also up there with this film. So beautiful.

Maquia is a movie like no other. Billed as a love story, we're lead to believe it's romantic love. No, it's maternal love, Maquia for Ariel. The difference in their aging rates, Maquia being a child even by the Iolf's standards when she adopts Ariel, and just the general amount of fucked up they have to go through to survive and she sacrifices herself for him at every necessary turn. That is why this movie breaks my heart. I one day want to become a mother, and seeing the love and pain of motherhood in this shows me the struggles I may go through. It also reinforces that desire, because even if I cannot have my own I can still give a child a wonderful life.
