Foreigners in China, Who are these people?

  • Not all foreigners that move to China are fine upstanding people. Most of them are but there is that group in every place I've been that makes all foreigners in China look bad. That said there are a lot of good foreigners from all over the world that either live or work in China. These are regular everyday people that see the excitement and adventure of being in a country like China. They vary from young English teachers to older expats that have married a Chinese lady. People that have come to visit and decided to stay and people that are just passing through seeing the sights. Whatever their reason for being in China it probably involves some form of adventure. This is my opinion of the foreigners I have seen and met in China.I'm sure this will PO some of the boys in Nanning but hey it's in my nature to tell it how I see it.

Very interesting analysis. Thanks. I think you left out foreigner expats working for large international firms - but they probably are not in Naning, but in tier 1 cities. For instance, many years ago, I worked for an international software firm and visited international offices, including Hong Kong and Singapore, but not the mainland. Of course, I just visited, but others were there on 1-3 year assignments.

Thai, Vietnamese, Lao people may look quite similar to local people in Guangxi province. But good to see some education exchange among these countries - considering there were some brutal battles since late 1970s until mid 1980s between China and Vietnam. I watched some other Vlogs by either Chinese TV station or tourists, it seems both sides of China and Vietnam are not so intense as they were in 1970s

Haha, I kind of fall into the married group NOW. But I came here out of professional necessity. My industry came here but I had already lived in Japan, Korea, Latin America and South America (professional reasons). But if you have at least a BA or MA and are in professional transition (like I was) coming to China as an English Teacher is an excellent way to segue into this society, make roots and branch off into your TRUE AREA of focus. You have to be strategic about it. That's how I transitioned and it took nearly 4.5 years. Once you get to know the ropes, you can get a better gig. It's almost impossible to make roots in China without ANY FORM of sponsorship, simply because of the laws. But there are WAYS, I've learned them but just as Winston says in one his recent videos, you will NEVER REALLY become a FULL RESIDENT (Green Card Holder) in China. You are subject to renewals, scrutiny and the POLITICAL whims and WINDS. Yet being a foreigner in China is tricky if you plan on being here for an extended period of time. In Nanning, I've seen of those #5'vers. I've seen them in Manila, Japan and Korea as well. True what you say and some of my Chinese female friends have told me HORROR STORIES about a few. Sad but ture. Now, I am not talking cultural or tourists. And yes, you'll get all of the flavors and layers of Foreigners here.

5th group. I recall there was an emegency on a ship. The bloke was medically ok but not quite right socially. He just return from cruise with his new wife. Poor Chinese girl. She had no relatives or friends in Australia. I could only hope she realises her predicament and find means to return home or move on from the relationship with the socially odd man. Put simply she seemed obliged to be with him out of economic necessity, was it better than her home life opportunity? hard to say but felt she had little choices since marrying the awkward guy, he was around 40. Stranger still, if you have nt worked things out by 25yo, then they are Johnny come lately.

It's like some Americans asked me when I was in USA.
    - If China's so great, why do Chinese people move to America or Canada, or Australia?
    I told them,
some of them liked America based on what they heard,
some of them liked the exchange rate to work there,
some of thier children can't get enough grades for good universities in China, then bought a spot of garbage university targetting Chinese students,
some of them joined cult like Falun,
some of them were actually criminals like corruption or shady business, or even gangs.
Of course, most of them loved high quality life in the United States.
But at end of the day, China is rich people's heaven, it got everything and they can do everything. Why did they leave? The answer is they messed up with somebody powerful enough to wipe them out of this world.

    • @glennw.4570
      @glennw.4570 6 лет назад +2

You are right, Du. A lot of 'dirty money' leaves China and finds a home in USA. Also, way to many Falun Gong propagandists find a home in USA. And, all the time in my city I see the rich Chinese student who did not study at home, and now go to my city's second tier university. They don't study here, either. They just loaf around and spend parent's money. Their parents spend a lot of money at the university, so the school officials will not kick them out for bad grades. The rich lazy Chinese students end up getting a degree that they did not earn, but their parents paid lots of money to get.

    • @spencer7404
      @spencer7404 6 лет назад

Andrew Cobb Dude, you miss my point. You're comparing USA with China, talking about what both countries look like. Well I was talking about which parts of Chinese immigrate there. A country is friendly for some groups of people and someone has to leave China for the U.S. aren't the same .
I do agree most of what you said. Tax is a big pain in the A in China.Even I can feel it, no mention those crazy rich people. And you get it when I say they can do anything. That part is what I mean heaven, not the quality life part. Because like you said, it's changing now.
There is one more thing. China is like wild west full of opportunities and exciting changes. I feel full of energy and hope here. I really love the 3 years when I was inCaltech. Life was amazing, girls were hot. But it's really too comfortable to make me lazy.

Originally the foreign english teacher who is actually a looser. However, he has been lucky that his videos have become popular. He is now making around 7000-8000$ a month by showing videos about stuff in china that is - for the most part - highly exaggerated and incredibly generalized.
If you don't believe these stats look up his patreon page where you can see that he make at least $3000 a month just by donation. Further from socialblade.com you can deduct that he gets round about another $4000 dollar from his channel and ADVChina. However, he contineously tells ppl how poor he is.

Chris Sabre, i think Andrew Cobb probably meant Chinese culture and Chinese history. Chinese empathize a lot on history, given that they have 5000 years of it. Serpentza's notion of Chinese being butt-hurt about WW2 clearly shows that he can't even meet the Chinese half way about their history, and he claims he knows a lot China! Maybe he knows the present day China, but certainly not the Chinese history and what it does to the Chinese people.

Nanning is home of scammers. Do you know about that? (I learnt this from local GX and GD people). I think I have watched your videos no more than two. The recent C'money and C"home was one that I can remember. Having watched this one, I clicked "Gweilo60" and found you have made tons of videos on CN. My first questions: Do you live in Nanning or Vancouver? and what made you go there so often and to explore, if you don't mind to tell us? Yes, you surely left out some groups, as many pointed out here, like specialists, business operators, expatriates, visiting QCs, etc. etc. IMO, those teachers (外教) went there to make a few easy bucks while enjoying the fun as tourist and perhaps, if they are visible 鬼佬, white (preferred), handsome and young enough, they can mix match at the convenience with some young girls. Again IMO, there are good guys and bad guys everywhere, whoever they are, they hangout at night for different purposes, but who cares if they don't break the law. There, I also went out for beer or 宵夜 too. :-) haha. Cheers!

Gweilo 60; I'm surprised with your comment on the oldest group of 'introverts.' Though you have a point about their heckling, they seem just like other laowais in China. Why classify people into stereotyped categories? It'd be great if you interview some reps from these groups. John Wang's right. I believe China is a compassionate country that allows people to be different and to find their way through life; not everyone is lucky to be happily married and settled with one partner! In some places, you seem to be so small minded, zooming in on their activities in Nanning. You should just smile at everyone, local or foreigner - citizens of the world. Why do you think China's opening up? Ad an important point - please don't nurture a 'blame others' culture. No one is responsible for what others think of you except yourself.

WT, The definition of Oversea Chinese in China is a person of Chinese Race born outside of China. Since you were born in China, strictly speaking, not a Oversea Chinese

DB, you are correct. WT may be culturally different from the Chinese Locals but his DNA is the same. As to the other 2 Outsiders? Well, just like a square pet in a round hole

Hi, this is interesting. In Buddhism they say that we should avoid having the discriminating mind. I feel that I have belonged to all 5!!! It depends on how you are with regards to stages in your life. There is only the now. So, it really depends. Who is foreign and who is Chinese? Dear Gweilo 60, may I tell you something!!! When I first went to China I loved Kung Fu and Chinese ladies. After a while I loved my Chinese girlfriend and drinking and having so may friends from all over the world. I was excited and life was more interesting than before. So, I managed to have another girlfriend and all that!!! Life flashed by me without letting me know the word: "AWAKEN!!!" I ended up realizing that things aren't really dependent on any egotistical plan. The main thing is that I was immensely happy when I lived In China at first, for , let me say, 5 years. Then, I realized that I could NEVER EVER BE Chinese. I then got disappointed with the OTHER!. I returned to the UK complaining in my head about this and that.
In my many years of living in China I have been one of the foreigners who loves Chinese culture and still does. And who sometimes has been a bit silly and complained. But I will always come back with more and more respect.
    I hope this helps.
So ALL 5!!! Like we all can be, but we hope to be just the ONE!!!!

The Chan Masters say that the discriminating mind is not ideal as the True Nature.

I read this from the Transmission of the Lamp. Please don't believe or disbelieve me. I was not wanting to argue. I just agreed with what Gweilo 60 was saying.Non discriminating leads to equanimity. "At ease and without picking and choosing the enlightened heart emerges." That is from The Transmission of the Lamp. Pge 36 Volume Two.

Zheese - as I see it, you only establish THREE categories - 1) People you like (such as yourself), 2) People you DON'T like, and 3) People you are neutral about.
    Choose one.
Well, I'd hate to fall in your "BAD" category . . .

Easy girls are everywhere , you can sleep with every different girl if you are in Africa, Philippines, and some other countries without marrying them. Chinese girls would always ask you to marry them. ..not easy..

People ask u where u are from? I usually get asked if I’m American, which I’m not. BTW, i fit into category number 3, though I’m not that old. You forgot to mention the disgruntled professionals who come here cause of their company back home, they’re on a high salary but don’t bother learning the language or culture, just complain about everything.
