- TRIGGER WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS REFERENCES TO RAPE, SEXUAL ABUSE AND EATING DISORDERS.
In light of recent events within the RUclips community, I thought this would be an appropriate time to talk feminism.
The books referenced in this video are as follows:
Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg www.goodreads....
How to Be a Woman, Caitlin Moran www.goodreads....
Bad Feminist, Roxane Gay www.goodreads....
Unspeakable Things, Laurie Penny www.goodreads....
Not That Kind of Girl, Lena Dunham www.goodreads....
If you want to know about the 'manic pixie dream girl' trope, check out Feminist Frequency's video: • #1 The Manic Pixie Dre...
And the brilliant Leena's video on Unspeakable Things is here: • Video
this is exactly the kind of video I was looking for. thank you for your input! can't wait to further educate myself!
You're welcome! Enjoy :)
This is the only video on actual feminists books and I'll be reading a lot of these books(Bad Feminist and Unspeakable things)-already read Not That Kind of Girl and agree with everything you have said about it. Thanks for making this video and hope to see more videos like this by you! Fantastic job!
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thanks :)
I'd love to see more!
It's not so much a woman with an opinion, but rather the underlying hostility and warped logic that follows closely behind.
Superb video! I have most of these books on my TBR or wishlist, but you certainly made me want to rush and read them. :)
Thank you! I'm glad this was encouraging.
Fantastic video! I'd love to hear more of your personal thoughts on each of these too.
I've read most of these, still to pick up Unspeakable Things and NTKoG (just read the first piece so far). Is Laurie Penny's Cybersexism piece you mention the same one that was published as a Kindle Single last year? I read and reviewed that one so if the rest of the book is on the same vein I'll have to hop to it.
Thank you :)
The Cybersexism essay was published as a one-off last year, yes. It's interesting to read within the context of her other essays. She comes at feminism from a slightly different angle from what I've seen before. I found her thoughts on geek culture and what it means to be a geek girl particularly fascinating.
I have read Not That Kind Of Girl and found it very intriguing and helpful. I am only 17 so I feel it's possibly not geared towards me specifically but I enjoyed it never the less.
You'll love Caitlin Moran's How to Be a Woman then! I definitely recommend that you pick it up :)
I've seen it around and heard about it, I will pick it up after christmas :)
I find Caitlin Moran a bit sitting on the fence and like you said an introduction. And I love the peter rabbit behind you.
Yes, I adore her but then she'll say something that makes me cringe. Beatrix Potter though
yeah she can definatly be cringey!
Great recommendations! I am happy to see Bad Feminist is there. I agree that eating disorders needs to be discussed more and in an intersectional way!
I noticed Oryx & Crake on your shelf and had to share that I just finished the trilogy. It was fantastic!
I loved Oryx and Crake and liked Year of the Flood. I'm hoping to get to the third instalment in the new year. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Margaret Atwood is a genius!
I can't say I've ever been tempted to read feminist literature, but it has come up so much lately here that I'm not sure.
I've only started recently, but have found it really worthwhile. Caitlin Moran's book is a great place to start if you're looking for accessibility.
Great video, I haven't read any of these but that is because I rarely read non fiction, something I really need to fix, however I've read some older feminist nonfiction for university and my A Levels. I may go and check out Bad Feminist, my housemate has a degree in Gender Studies, a degree which in the UK has been cut from nearly all university syllabuses.
I hope you do, it's well worth a read :)
Yes, Gender Studies does seem to get overlooked, or looked down upon. It's a shame because it's surely as important as ever with the amount of media we consume on a daily basis.
Thanks for your comment!
Great video, will definitely be subscribing and checking out some of your recommendations!
Thank you. So glad to come across your channel too!
I don't feel like that....
that was terrifying, I just almost hit the dislike in my haste to hit the like button. this is so great, I really want to check these out now
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
ome so glad i clicked on this videooo. ALL SOUNDS INTERESTING, THANK YOU SO MUCH
How to Be a Woman wasn't on of my favorites. The best feminist books I've read so far have been A Strange Stirring by Stephanie Coontz and The Meaning of Wife by Anne Kingston.
I recommend Fifty Shades of Feminism edited by Lisa Appignanesi. It shows a wide spectrum of feminism, I really enjoyed it! Just finished it today. I loved reading the different views on feminism, including women who don't label themselves as feminist and dissecting the word, feminism.
MaidofSparkle That sounds really interesting. Thanks for the recommendation!
Amazing, thank you so much!
Love to see what you make of Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit!
I actually read it in December! I'll mention it in my December wrap-up (when that happens) :)
how can you not be a feminist? #somepeople #iswear
Im not a moron
SteveReadsBooks feminism used to be fighting for women’s rights. Now it is hating men and believing in the lie that is the wage gap the wage gap doesn’t exist it depends on your academical choices and is spreaded by lunchladies blaming CEOs for their status because they are men. It is learning children that men including their fathers are all rapists. But the most fucked up thing is that feminists are like the kids who won’t eat their vegetables and deny the fact that children in Africa don’t have food. If the feminists could stop whining and lying about their fucking fake wage gap and help women in oppressive countries like for instance north korea, turkey, countries in Africa and Saudi arabia you can make the world a better place and hear positive comments about your faction and america. But no lets listen to some ugly people with blue hair talk about why men are an abomination and why we should start a genocide against them, and you ask why not be a feminist here’s fucking why
Feminists are dumb they get their opinions from one source, but if you take all your info from one source your opinion and way of thinking becomes rigid and unstable and you will be another incompetent feminist
Really good video, you go girl! :-)
Thank you :)
Race and racism is an important issue but I honestly dont get why Feminists expect to hear about it in Feminist books which are to do with sexism, not racism. Both are important issues and result from oppression, I could see why someone would state comparisons but they are separate topics and I dont think most white women exclude black women or anything or that sexism is any different for black women. Whites may be glorified more in magazines but thats a racist issue, not a sexism one.
Ik this was 3 years ago but im gonna comment anyways. Feminism has long since moved past the fight against just sexism. In addition, We need to fight racism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. Intersectionality is where it needs to be. White women may not purposely be leaving out black women but that is the result when you only fight sexism and ignore the oppression black women and woc experience due to their intersecting identities. race and sexism are not separate topics for black women. Its more than the issue of representation in a magazine. And sexism is very different for black women since black bodies are constantly hypersexualized and discriminated against for their race.
@@sangyeonlove7691 yes i love this comment you siad it perfectly
