    I am a retired auto tech and building a daily driver with reliable robust parts and creating as service manual to go with it. My biggest hurdle in planning for the correct n-type Mosfet, is correct on voltage within saturation.
    I am running a cooling fan across a radiator type device to cool the automatic transmissions fluid. Using a can/probe type NTC thermistor at 10k (Standard for 25 degrees C) but also to make it adjustable, I am placing a 10k pot as a voltage divider for gate control of an N-channel Mosfet. I believe with most data sheets that 2-4 volts for “On” voltage for the Mosfet, I will use a 100 ohms resistor. I will use an external relay oversized to ensure a robust circuit and ease of diagnostics, repair, testing and a large auto-type relay box, found behind the glove box of Park Avenues & LeSabers. It is narrow and takes little space, yet holds 12 relays and 14 fuses. I am very good with auto electronics, but ok will enough knowledge to build a circuit on a bread board...without setting a fire!
    They sell digital readout type temp sensors for $10. But they loose their setting if disconnected from power. I don’t want that! I will spend $20 now, to save $150 later. Your thoughts on a mosfet? My eyes are bleeding after 77 data sheets and 94 videos that mostly play music. Great for music lovers, but I want to get one thing done per day, while waiting for my S1-L2 lumbar fusion. It’s not fun or easy, but not related to fixing cars since the late 60’s. Thank you for a clear explaintion and I have to admit, I was saying out loud to draw the vertical dotted line...and you did! God bless you.

    This is VERY HELPFUL.
    Thank you especially for: not only verbalizing the effects on Current, Resistance, and Voltage; but writing also. That really makes a world of difference--it reinforces those points!
    Seriously, you should teach. You have an intuition for clarity.

    At 5:32,you said.. When Vgs is high, Vds is high. I am a bit confused. When the mosfet conducts, the voltage across should drop. Please clarify

      Yeah I have the same doubt, Vds should drop and current rise through it, right?

    I have alot of mosfet from different circuit boards.ok so i have a QW MS305D dc power supply right the mosfet has shortened out.so I'm going to replaced it with the new mosfet transistor on the volts side.theres 2 so i don't know which one has shortened out but i will think critically and choose which one.

    You did not explain how this works? I mean what is making the mofset have a Voltage Threshold and Then Saturation mode. How does this work like this internally, can someone please explain? Thank you.

    need more explanation as to why id is 0 when VGS is increasing in the beginning

    • @LiveLaughPlay859
      @LiveLaughPlay859 3 года назад

      Id is zero because VGS has not surpassed the Vth (threshold voltage) assigned to the MOSFET by the manufacturer. So no current flows until that voltage is met.

    I'm new to MOSFETs, let me begin with that, but I'm not seeing something here. I'm stuck at 5:50.
    If Id is close to zero, it follows that Rds is very high. Fine. However, this would imply that Vds is also high. If current is not flowing, then there's in implied high resistance. How then would Vds be low?

    • @gshengelaia2001
      @gshengelaia2001 2 года назад

      I think he made an error. Vds is independent from Vgs.

  • @mrpeterpotts5106

    Why do you write iD as a variable? Do you mean current between D and S? iDS

  • @murzabaev

    When the transistor is open, the voltage Vds should be high isn't it? And when it is closed, Vds should be low. If yes, then the portion of a video at 6:28 is incorrect.

    • @carrizzle9586
      @carrizzle9586 5 лет назад +3

      Yeah when Vgs is high then Vds will be low (Practically no voltage drop across the device). Basically all the current will flow from Drain to Source with the exception of the small voltage drop due to the Resistance of the Mosfet when on (Rds on parameter on datasheet). I was going to comment on that too until I saw your comment.

    • @abicelis
      @abicelis 4 года назад

      Yup, you're correct.

    • @abicelis
      @abicelis 4 года назад

      @Soumeya Benzina If there's say a 12V voltage source between drain and source and Vgs is *lower* than Vth (which is the voltage between gate and source at which the mosfet starts to conduct current) then Vds will be 12V.

    • @carrizzle9586
      @carrizzle9586 4 года назад

      @Soumeya Benzina That's correct assuming that its not a P-mos device.

  • @davidyeefrach4554

    Vds is high if vgs is low.

    • @m101ist
      @m101ist 3 года назад

      I thought so, if Vgs is low, Voltage across drain and source is high. Is this right? 🙄

    The problem with education is that everyone wants to be politically correct. Just say if the damn gate voltage is high then the supply voltage is high too
