She seems too young to be a mama. I definitely may be wrong, so please pardon me for what I’m about to say if that’s the case. It appears that one is a male trying to mate with a young female. I know in the wild males without cheek flaps often resort to “forced copulation” because they’re not the females’ first choice to father their offspring. I hope that’s not the situation because surely the zoo staff will have to parent the resulting baby. Especially if this young female was an orphan or just raised in captivity she is probably not knowledgeable enough about motherhood in addition to still being pretty much a “kid” herself to either have the desire or ability to care for an infant. There seem to be lots of “accidental “ pregnancies with orangutans in zoos. They really need to either separate the ones that aren’t suitable yet (or are in danger of being forced to mate) or at the very least put them on birth control, which is not uncommon for captive orangutans in some of the more modern and highly accredited zoos.
