Perfect project for orphan blocks! I use my orphan blocks to practice free motion quilting and for doll quilts for the Santa train that a quild of mine donates. Christmas gifts is great idea! Thanks for sharing Michelle!!🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
I think the carrot is my favorite, thanks for the fun idea I have a HUGE 2 bins of orphans so a fun quilt and I can get rid of my disgusting burnt up pot holders
I usually try to use a dark backing and when I use the pot holder, I use the darker side to help keep my white/light side cleaner. If I put a pot on it, I do the same. Your ideas to use orphan blocks for potholders is great. Thank you
In the uk we grow a type of carrot called ‘rondo’ which is small and rounded and bred to grow in pots or window boxes. It looks just like the cute one on your orphan patch.
Lol! I love to garden and I would love to grow some of those! I am going to see if I can order some seeds!!! Thank you so much!!! It is so amazing how easily we can communicate with those from other countries! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
I don’t have orphan blocks, but I do use scraps and extra fabric to make pot holders. I don’t usually use binding; I just sew them right sides together and leave an opening for turning. Then I do slip stitch the opening closed and sew several rows of topstitching around the perimeter. The problem I find is that potholders made with Insul-Bright are difficult to bend with one hand. I usually end up using mine for hot pads on my counter. I agree that two layers of regular batting are needed along with Insul-Bright or any of the other battings made for this purpose. For that purple fabric that was hard to see on your blue cutting mat, you could have flipped the fabric over and measured because the back side of the fabric was light in color. That’s what I do if I can. If I can’t, I slip a piece of white paper between the fabric and the cutting mat just far enough to be able to measure. I don’t cut the paper with the rotary cutter - except by accident sometimes 😊. I recently bought a 12 x 18 mat in pink to help with the fabric-matches-the-green mat problem when I’m doing trimming. I enjoyed this video
These are so cute. I had some old heavy pot holders and simply recovered them. The batting was pretty heavy and I like them but they just looked a little shabby. They turned out great. I also take orphan blocks and scraps of batting to make cat mats for my local shelter.
@@thesimplequilter7499 cat mats are for the cats at the shelter. Just a soft mat for them to sit on. Mine are about the size of place mats give or take. I use fleece or flannel for backing and often extra batting.
I hang my potholders on a hook by the stove where they’re handy. Nice video, Michelle, and so was Wednesday’s. I don’t think I have any orphan blocks. I rarely, if ever, make test blocks so I don’t wind up with things that don’t have a place. But I enjoyed this! Thanks, Michelle!
I don't use orphan blocks. Good idea however. I have made a few in your checkerboard style. I followed A Quilting Life instructions and rounded the corners but then had to use bias binding. The problem is that i find them too pretty to use!! 😂 thanks for the video.
I am trying not to do that....save things that are too pretty or to good to use. I have always done that; however, we make these things to use and enjoy so lets USE AND ENJOY! Happy quilting!
Those turned out so cute! They'd make nice gifts too.
Yes they would!!

Thanks for sharing Fern!
Love that you turned it all into potholders.
Thanks!!

You will have so much fun going through it!
I love to make scrappy potholders and I agree, you need that extra layer of batting.
Yours turned out very cute!
Thanks so much! 😊
I haven’t used orphan blocks to make potholders before now; but I sure plan to in the future. Thank you for the informative and instructional video! 😊
Enjoy!!
I cut up a 100% cotton textured towel for the backing. You can get many from one towel.
Great plan!
I love to give them as gifts for all the different holidays
They are fun and useful!
Love that orphan carrot found a home ❤
It really is pretty cute!!

You are most welcome! Thanks for sharing your tip!
That carrot is too stinking adorable ❤
I think so too!
Fun ideas for using what’s already in our stashes. The carrot (or strawberry) potholder is my favorite-lovin’ the fabric colors you used. 😊
Thank you!

I love the carrot/strawberry and the boat best of all. I always find that I need to layers of batting and one of insulbright.
You and me both!

What is a cat mat? How big are they?

I have done this a few times with left over blocks or blocks I messed up on. The nice ones I gift the rest are just for me.
They were fun to make!
👍👍👍
Thank you!

Thank you Beverly! Thanks for taking the time to reply!
I use towels also. Hate heat resistant fabric
I think my favorite older pot holders have towels in them.
These are so cute. Great job❤❤❤
Thank you! 🤗

Never Thor to use orphan blocks. Gotta get busy!
Have fun!
I think your carrot looks like a strawberry to me.
I agree!
What do you layer along with the blocks?
Batting and Insulbrite
What is the pink knob on your ruler?
Here is one of my video shorts that will show you! I really like using them!

I can see a radish too!!! Lol!
