Obama's Report Card - A Breakdown Of His Presidency

  • Laying out all of the good and bad in President Obama's time in office. Very detailed breakdown.
CORRECTION: forgot a big one for the 'bad' column: Obama's war on whistleblowers - obviously this would get a little better if he pardons Chelsea Manning in the next few days (there are reports he might), but the situation with Snowden, and the fact that he's used the 'espionage act' to go after more whistleblowers than all previous presidents combined is inexcusable. (Thank you to everyone who pointed out that I missed this!)

If Obama pardons or commutes Manning's sentence, that will be a huge deal, not just for manning, but for whistleblowers in general. It would be an act of true compassion...I would literally cry if it happens.

For me, I will never be able to forget or forgive how the architects of the financial crisis not only didn't get punished, but were able to go back to business as usual or even more corrupt than before. I was graduating college around that time, and god DAMN life was a struggle just to find even shitty jobs. But the people who caused it to happen? They came out ahead. Obama did a lot of good, I know. But that's a defining moment of his presidency for me because it defined how godawful my mid-to-late 20's would be. It caused a lot of disillusionment. I still get angry about it.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of us who were between the ages of 18-21 in 2007~ really got the shaft in terms of good employment opportunities. A lot of those nice middle management jobs and other good middle class business type jobs never came back either, a lot of them got consolidated and the responsibilities were broken up to lower level employees or higher level employees. In a lot of companies I have worked at you are either at the top or bottom now, there is little room for advancement.

Alright, now let's play "Predict Trump's Report Card"! Come back to this comment in 4 years to see how things turned out!
    POSITIVES:
    - Got us out of Syria
    - Labelled China a currency manipulator
    - Was so horribly awful that the backlash gave the presidency to [Bernie the White, formerly Bernie the Grey, but after a failed assassination attempt by one of Richard Spencer's followers/Cory Booker but after being visited by three ghosts and giving up big money donations/Elizabeth Warren], as well as handing the Senate and Congress over to the Democrats.
    - Didn't escalate with Russia despite pressures from his own party
    NEGATIVES:
    - Ruined American healthcare system/tried to pass Obamacare off as his own idea by renaming it Trumpcare and leaving it almost unchanged
    - Caused another economic crash by slashing taxes for the rich and deregulating big business... also pissing off China
    - Declared war on Iran; wasted 4 trillion dollars and 40,000 American lives; killed 2 million Iranians, 300,000 Israelis and 350,000 Palestinians
    - Used a fucking nuke, or at least seriously threatened to do so
    - Did at least one rape or sexual assault
    - Amped up coal and fossil fuel usage, sending humanity into a death-spiral from which it may not recover (THE BIG ONE; HE MAY HAVE DOOMED THE HUMAN RACE HERE)
    - Attacks on freedom of the press and deregulation of libel laws
    - Increasing restrictions on abortion
    - Allowed states to open up gay conversion therapy bullshit
    - Executed Chelsea Manning :(
    - Tried to stab Cornell West to death with a broken bottle
    - Didn't really care much about the whole "alt-reich marching against Jewish neighbourhoods" thing
    - Let Russia invade [INSERT COUNTRY HERE]
    - Recognized annexation of Crimea
    - Privatized the State of Nebraska

Obama was a president who, as you said, does not really represent all the leftist values people think he does. However, to be upset with him is ridiculous. In comparison to almost every other president I would say he's one of the best.

I agree with this as well. Kyle acts like if Obama were as bullheaded as he is(or even as many Republicans can be) everything would have gotten passed. I think Obama's policy timidness is connected to his moderate side which is connected to compromise side. If he went full-fledged progressive we'd be giving him a 0% rating because he would have gotten NOTHING and I mean nothing done. There were times that he showed assertiveness though and I think that's where liberals get annoyed. He'll show it in certain issues but then not in others. So you see he's capable of not pulling punches but then he goes back to pulling punches.

No real need. I think we all agree Trump was a terrible president. The problem with Obama is that he is so smooth, so popular, so well-liked, that it can be difficult to assess his presidency objectively. Kyle does a great job of that here.

    - Started out with two conflicts in the middle east we now have seven.
    - Re-inflated the same the same economic system that created the recession in 08.
    - Supplied "rebels", who've committed some of the most heinous crimes against humanity during the Syrian conflict.
    - Funded Saudi Arabia in their genocidal rampage in Yemen.
    - Pushed the TPP, which would have ended the freedoms we currently enjoy on the internet.

Take it metaphorically, exactly was it was meant. Mexico "pays for it" based on how they respond to Trump, either to their benefit, or their detriment. Are you really stupid enough to believe that Mexico is simply going to hand over some cash? It doesn't work that way.

Actually I'm afraid you're the idiot here. When trump first mentioned "Mexico will pay for the wall" he meant it LITERALLY. Trump and the mexican president went back and forth on conferences, with the Mexican president stating "I'm not paying for that fucking wall" (look it up). Reporters then began to press trump about how he was going to make mexico pay for the wall given that the mexican president said he refused. Trump had to find a way out of this hard position, so he twisted what he originally said to not seem like a complete idiot, thus turning to a "metaphorical" for the trade deals as you put it. His original statement was NOT metaphorical (and how arrogant of you assume the entire U.S population would interpret it as such, do you realize how dumb the average American is?)

He waited until he was nearly out of office to help Standing Rock. And both pipelines were not stopped permanently. He gave us a really weak ruling. The Rezpect Our Water Lakota youth
ran 2000 miles to deliver a petition to Obama, and he would not even speak to them. He increased fracking all over the nation, and allowed the export ban on fossil fuels to expire. As a president for the environment and water he was a HUGE disappointment.
He did not help stop either pipeline. He could have declared Standing Rock a protected area. He could have stood up before the demonstration got out of hand. But instead just said 'let's see how it plays out'. #NoDAPL #WaterIsLife #RezpectOurWater

One of the functions of the state is to kill. It is almost expected for it to happen. Therefore, is it really that improper? This is an argument for anarchism.
By virtue of being an empire, which the US is, foreign actors who oppose US power will die. It is not possible to be President of the United States and not have killed people in the post-WWII regime. Even a Sanders or Gabbard presidency would have presided over extrajudicial killings.

      I 99% agree with you.
FDR was a ROLE MODEL for all modern American presidents.
Though he was bad on race relations and social issues though. If we take into consideration that he was fairly soft on the Soviets in allowing MUCH annexation of Eastern Europe (which I understand, tbh), he turned a blind eye to much of Stalin's tyranny. I get it though, since he had much on his own plate domestically and last thing he wanted was another war.
FDR also did Japanese internment, which is effectively collective guilt. Understandable give the context, but still wrong.
He also allowed much redlining and didn't expand all of the blessings of the New Deal to blacks, allowing for much urban de facto segregation.
But on literally everything else, the hundreds upon hundreds of his policies, including all legislation he rammed through Congress, and EVERYTHING on economics, FDR was a motherfuckin boss. Greatest president ever.
