STRANGER THINGS VR Review - Only For The Fans? // Quest 3 Gameplay

- Stranger Things VR Review (Quest 3 Gameplay) - Stranger Things VR is much more of an interactive experience than a traditional game, it’s a product more comparable to walking through a virtual art installation or a series of loosely connected dream sequences & abstract environments than the structure of a cohesive adventure game, in fact during my sub three hour playthrough I found myself listening to dialogue and absorbing the atmosphere more often than engaging with anything that resembled "gameplay" in the conventional sense. Stranger Things VR is a game for super fans of the show, it's a new way to experience key moments from the existing 4 seasons and really it acts as a low letter to much of what already exists without adding anything new. If you’re heading into Stranger Things VR looking for an action packed adventure game then there’s a good chance you’ll leave disappointed...
At £22.99 Stranger Things VR feels perfectly priced, the campaign which consists of 9 chapters took me 2hrs 40minutes to finish on normal difficulty and I ultimately walked away having enjoyed my time in this world. Despite being a relatively short experience the attention to detail, unique art style, polish and presentation quality of the overall package ultimately justified the price of entry and a few fan service high points throughout the campaign were enough to keep me happy despite the shortcomings of some chapters and sections. However for those who DON'T have prior experience of the show this is NOT the place to start, Stranger Things VR is very much a product for fans only as those without the knowledge needed to enjoy this experience will likely end up feeling VERY lost indeed.

Straight to the point. Always love your reviews Benjo, thank you!
Aye thank you very much, I’m gonna strive to keep these reviews to the 10minute mark going forward, gotta be more concise
Sounds like the movie/tv tie in they used to sell for $5 or have for free a few years ago to get hype for a movie or new season. its sad they are charging $30 for it.
Great review Beardo! I appreciate the details on explaining what clicks with the game and what doesn't. I feel like this could be a game that I'd enjoy.
I am a big fan of the series, but $30 for this 2 hour short is to overpriced
@@solid_justice5855 I personally don't base my purchases on the amount of time a game takes to finish. For some reason, the game is cheaper in Canada. With a referal, the game would only cost me $19.45USD. Seems a lot more reasonable :)
Comparison to 'What remains of edith finch" is very high praise
Only in terms of its abstract, dreamlike structure and walking simulation gameplay mechanics. Edith Finish is a masterpiece in comparison
Excellent review Beardo!
I originally bought my Quest 3 for this… that’s how much I love Stranger Things. I was a PSVR 2 only VR player and get the Quest 3 at launch because I knew this was only going to be for Quest. Fortunately I’ve gotten access to such amazing gems like Dungeons of Eternity, Asgard’s Wrath 2, Power Wash Simulator, and more. Just a darn shame the game I really wanted turned out like this
I've never seen ST but I love Tender Claw because of the way the use the VR media an got sad to read general bad reviews, but yours gave me some hope. The artistical walking sim experience is one I would gladly take so I will start soon with the series on Netflix first
Thanks for the balanced review, can always rely on BB for a real perspective. 👍
Thank you as always buddy ❤️
This is a £7 experience, not a £22 game - played an hour, time to refund, will wait till a better price point.
I came close to preordering it but thanks to u and GT I didn’t. Thanks again
Idk about the gameplay, but I'm getting this game cause im a fan of the series and the environments look stunning
It will definitely be enjoyable for some fans, not all fans, but certainly those who just want to be IN a Stranger Things narrative for a little while
Idc what anyone says. This game is by far one of the best VR game I have ever played.
That’s crazy! 😂 so happy I didn’t preorder
Never preorder anything, that’s the smart boi way
You know you can always get a refund even if you pre order. You have 7 days and like 3 hours of gameplay. Doesn’t matter if you pre order.
From everything you said, I think the price is too high. I haven’t watched the series so I won’t be buying this game. Thanks Ben. Great review!
Within sixty seconds of this video starting, this “game” was deleted from my Quest wishlist.
Haha damn, glad I could get the point across so quickly
Beardo the GOAT
This game is fun even though I have only watched the first two seasons of stranger things and that was a couple years ago now.
I am also a sucker for mixed reality modes they’re just cool to me.
When is this out Ben??? I e preordered months ago and it’s agrivateing
That is what you get for pre-ordering a digital game... A fool and their money are easily parted. Get a clue people.
I pre ordered it too for that cheaper price tag. I'm installing it now! Finally released!
@@DKVR wow knob mode activated nice such a sad life you lead trying to belittle people hehehe
@@tyleradams3490 I just checked and no money gone but no preorder lol that was lucky I like the idea of the game but 22 quid for two hours,,,nah I’ll just jump back on tabor lol
@@Poisedanubis85 Nah, its a sad life when you pay money for literally no reason and then cry about it later. Come on now.
The first season is the best.
I was convinced that I wouldn’t buy this until I saw your review. Now I’m convinced I will buy it, after the inevitable patching.
I was a big fan of Tender Claws until Virtual Virtual Reality 2, which despite having some intriguing elements, was in my opinion a train wreck of a game that should never have been released.
I wasn’t happy about the idea of playing as the bad guy in Stranger Things.
Several other reviews today were very harsh.
But I think I understand what this is now and I think I’ll really enjoy it.
I’m a big fan of the show. I like VR art project experiences like Gloomy Eyes, Wolves Within the Walls, Madrid Noir, and Allumette.
I think I’m this game’s target audience.
Thanks for posting this review.
I am a massive fan of the show. I feel tho they could have done so much more. This might as well have been released on flat instead of vr. They are missing a major opportunity. They could have released this were you played as 11 fighting creatures from the upside-down. It still could have peaked interest for non fans of the show. Such a miss opportunity.
I would’ve preferred them to take the obvious option and give us a game playing as Eleven and blasting through the shows most iconic moments, I really think that would’ve landed better than this abstract story
@@BeardoBenjo Indeed! This will not attract as many users. For fans of the show this is amazing but so many users will not get some of the references unless they have seen the show. The title is just a fan service. This will lack what makes most vr experiences great.
Why can't you just be honest (like GT) and say it sucks?
VR content provider of the year, ladies and gentlemen...
Why was everyone expecting this to be a real game! It’s to show and demonstrate how the Quest 3 works. Mixed realty people! lol . They will update with new things anyways
Still waiting on my prescription inserts to do a walkthrough
I really should get some of those, I wear glasses normally but have never tried lenses in my VR headsets
@@BeardoBenjo i had ordered from reloptix for my quest 3. Its on its way here. Just wish it was here sooner lol
@@BeardoBenjoprescription lenses are a game changer. They protect your lenses and you can add blue light filter option to make it less straining on your eyes for longer sessions. I got mine on my psvr2 from reloptix and i love them. I need to get some for my quest 3 soon
Padding isn't really what I would want to experience in a 3 hour game.
We want it in psvr2
GREAT Review!!! Thanks for this. helping me decide on games for new kit :) For now a pass as I want some meaty gameplay experiences! Cheers.
Ok finished watching...just to add. 2hours and 40 mins...I expect to be entertained like a movie and would probably pay up to double a movie ticket...however, this seems to be priced a bit high for what you are actually getting which is unfortunate. I will likely still get this but when it is on sale.
You will find no meat here my friend! Glad I could help
It’s a bit disappointing this is a fan targeted story that is lacking in gameplay. Perhaps if it drops to a half price deal I’ll take a look but at £23 it’s not perfectly priced to me of such a short experience.
All that wait for nothing.. lol
It could’ve been so much better, I still believe we’ll get a great Stranger Things game at some point, something with a little more cohesive direction and substance
ANd another game that was deceptive with trailers.
Certainly more of an “interactive experience” than a game, that’s for sure
Not defending it but a I saw was a teaser trailer which showed a couple moments of walking through if sparse landscapes and nothing else. Id say the game looks pretty representative of this.
30 bucks for two hours is crazy cmon, perfectly priced?
i hate when magic power type game add circles and lines all over the things your using powers on it breaks immersion and makes it pointless
First I bought PSVR 1 because of Resident Evil 7 Biohazard - amazing game.... then I bought Quest 2 two years ago because of Resident Evil 4. Started playing and cannot believe game like this is running native on portable VR headset. Now I am still waiting for game of the same quality, but it looks its not going to happen....Quess what real AAA game I finally enjoyed after a long time??? YES guys you are right Resident Evil 4 REMAKE! and RE 8 Village !!!! I don't believe Meta, I dont believe Sony will bring a game of the same quality as mentioned above....because they will not....Thanks Resident Evil for nice time in VR, you showed us how VR games might will look like in 10 years also thanks to Praydog for his work and saving VR...
Bro, PCVR is the best. Half Life Alyx, Half Life 2 VR, Vertigo, Vertigo 2. Right now I'm having a blast with Into The Radius
Those flickering lights would most likely give me a ticket to 6 feet under. So i will avoid it and never play it, despite the fact that I love Stranger Things and i love VR.
Not my jam, I played 7th guest instead.
Haha, it's DoA. A vr "experience" at that price in 2024.
It's bad enough the Duffers stretched this out to 5 seasons due to greed, making a 23 quid 2 and a half hour walking sim with a trailer that made it look like an action game, JFC
Cheers for saving us some cash
Season 4 was actually great, so im not complaining that there are 5 seasons
Bro season 4 was so good, my favourite by far but then I love how dark it went, the horror fiend in me was pleased
I absolutely LOVED Stranger Things on Netflix. I literally binge watched it over 1 week. Apparently this is turd but I’m going to check it out, anyway.
Same, huge fan of the show, the game had moment that I really enjoyed and I admire what they were trying to do, it just doesn’t come together as a solid “complete” experience. Moments of greatness but also moments of confusion and lacklustre action
They should've named it "ST the Experience"
Now, everyone is disappointed. Gamertag VR destroyed that game.
Haha yeah I watched his video, it looks like he got stuck and confused at the exact bit I thought people might get stuck and confused at 😅 chapter 5 man, it’s VERY aimless and there’s no direction to it
they delayed it by 3 months.. just for this?
This not being an actual game doesn't surprise me. A lot of developers struggle to turn passive media into something compellingly interactive. Thanks for the fair review.
Losing time 😔
Two hours for £22 is perfectly priced? Wowza Mr Moneybags! Not for me it aint.
All in relation to other things I guess.
If you went and saw the "stranger things stage show" thats going to got you at least £35 for a similar length experience.
Personally when I saw the teaser months ago? I thought it looked a bit bad but Im a stranger things fan....but not enough for £22 either
As far as VR entertainment goes..... this is well below par compared to recent releases..... sadly a no goer for me!
Ahhh for $30 I’m out
I didn’t realise it was $30, that always sounds way worse that the UK price of 22.99 even though relatively speaking it’s not 😂
I'm glad I wasn't dumb enough to pre-order this.
Never preorder anything, that’s my motto lol
@@BeardoBenjo man, I never do. Just cause of the quality of titles that release. NOT only in VR! I just finished your video, great feedback on the game.
Thank you!
It's stranger things??????? What did people expect?? Seriously.
🤷🏼♂️ dunno
@@BeardoBenjoyeah like i cant expect ppl seriously thought stranger things VR would've been the next boneworks of vr or smth..
Oops. Bit over kind on that one mate...bit shill. Sorry but true. Everyone else says it's terrible. It's always hard when...eh...kerching...comes calling.
What the fuck are you on about 😂 I was balanced, fair, critical and honest, if you want some rage bait monkey content then go consume that. Also I wasn’t paid by anyone so get fucked with your shill nonsense you milkshake brain
@@BeardoBenjowow what a triggered loser
I knew it would be a bunch of nothing because that's all they showed.
Another meta stinker. Meta really need to update their game and push out some quest 3 exclusives, it's been 6 months. People will just go back to flat to play Helldivers.
You're right. VR just doesn't have playability unless you like larping on VR Chat. I find myself playing my ps4 that I've owned for like 10 years instead of my brand new quest 3. The majority of VR games are just trash, or last 2 hours, or both. Haha
Helldivers looks so boring to me lol. I'm glad a lot of people are loving it though. It looks like it would be really fun for a few hours and then get boring.
I’ve literally been blasting through my flat game back catalogue for the last couple months, nothing big has really hit in VR for a few months now. I don’t mind too much, it’s giving me time to play Tomb Raider, Helldivers, Lies of P and Deep Rock Galactic Survivor
@@BeardoBenjo lies of p is on my wishlist. Im assuming you'd say it's worth it?
Red Matter 2 was the 1st game I played on Q3 and it blew me away with its immersion, story, graphics, audio..everything so I thought this was going to be the standard…unfortunately not it seems, every single game just seems to be a port of Q2 games (Assasins creed and Asgards wrath were designed for Q2), I’ve yet to find anything else that showcases what the Q3 is actually capable of..which is disappointing..after playing Red Matter 2 everything else just seems “clunky”
This sucks......i was looking forward to this
Same, I did have fun, but certainly no where near as much as I wanted to and I’ll admit I had to drag myself through that midsection of the game 😔
what a let down
Developers are so dumb and unoriginal 99% of the time. The majority of the selling point for Quest 3 was the passthrough and the only games I've personally seen utilize it was always the same. Sure you could go the Demeo or Lego route and just make the game itself in your room. But that's not good enough either IMO. Quest 3 should have been released with augments already figured out. Just lazy.
That sounds...stupid.
1h play… refund requested. This is NOT a game
I guess that’s the good thing about Metas refund policy, you can give anything a go for an hour and this game is definitely one where you’ll KNOW if it’s for you within that time
@@BeardoBenjo yup, can’t believe I was excited about this… found strange NO one talking about this, not a single video… usually that should say a lot, again Meta is really good with refund… Sony and PSVR2 I can’t say the same when I’m unhappy with a game.
This looks so bad. Lol.
It’s certainly something, a very “STRANGE” game 😉
Give US PC games with high end graphics for fuk sakes… tired of looking at these mobile standalone 🗑️ flops🤦🏾🤷🏾♂️.. I thought Half-Life Alyx set the bar???
looks more like a $10 'game' than 20, pass
Meh, I'll torrent it later.
