Scholars in conversation analysis have known for a long time that we try to avoid using the word 'no'. We rely on a number of other linguistic resources to 'say no' in order to save face. So why is this word necessary in one very specific, high-stakes situation? Liz Marasco has Master of Arts in Linguistics from CU Boulder where she specialized in conversation analysis. I was told when I tell people to stop that I don't sound like I mean it. And when I say it, I don't even say "stoooooop!" Or "nooooo!" They only stop when I use violence. So I've just taken to threats. But now everyone knows I won't follow up on those threats and I don't have an answer to sounding like I mean it.
