    Exactly right on all points. Most adults don't think those type of break bros are cool, but kids definitely do. I immediately have to leave if I stumble upon one. None of the bigger influencers are going to say anything because they're too busy trying to ride fanatics coattail.

    About time someone spoke about this, took me about 6 months in this hobby to finally figure out this whole box opening and breaking stuff is a big flush of money. Sure opening the boxes are fun but the prices of some of these for the value is insane. Couple that with the fact breaking is unregulated gambling and your losing no matter what. Proud to have not bought into a break since July and a box since December, singles all day.

    Anybody with any common sense would never ever let someone else open your packs or boxes online!!! The problem with it is you're not there, and people will take advantage of you!!! Just like a magician, some of these breakers can scam your break... People need to smarten up!!!! Ty Mr. D for your great insight on this matter....

    Well said Degen. I've had pretty much the same thought about this in the past. And it's not only Fanatics live, there is so much unregulated stuff going on around the internet that target kids specifically. Social media like Tiktok is a cesspool of it. It's crazy that there hasn't been more government regulations.

    You're absolutely right that breaking is gambling, there really needs to be more discussion on it. A lot of people are addicted to it and blow all their money just like people addicted to casinos do. Except one is a known evil and the other is "just cards" so it's not considered taboo

  • @bennybreaks702

    As a guy that live in Vegas, I absolutely 19488474 percent agree with you.
    Some will argue a hobby box is the same or worse. They're just lying to themselves.
    All this "legal" gambling needs to be regulated somehow. Michael Rubin needs to step up. But he's a clown, so he won't do anything. Whether in cards or video games. Kids are being persuaded to gamble without knowing it. Sad really.

  • @markthompson7503

    I agree with you Degen. Pimping Fanatic breaks in kids packs is a little over the top. Wait until Fanatics takes over the autograph meet and greets and instead of some athletes being a fair price Fanatics jacks up their prices and they can only sign Fanatics owned products. 2024 Series One Fanatics Blasters, Hangers, Jumbo Boxes, Fat Packs in that order. That said buy singles of what you want and you will save money! I love to rip but even I have come to the realization that it's funner to speculate and buy a few player's cards then flip them when they get called up or have a great game/season.

  • @PopCultureBuddy

    Very well said. Thank you for taking a stand on this issue. They are masking the hobby rip night as a gateway into breaking for kids. It appears Fanatics is trying to hook them early. Breaking has its place in the hobby for sure but promoting it to kids just feels wrong IMO.

    As someone who is becoming a dad for the first time next month and also a breaker. I will never let my kids join breaks. • @BPal75
    @BPal75 9 месяцев назад

    Completely agree Degen. There is no doubt in my mind that Fanatics' reason for taking over Topps was they saw the margin expansion possibilities by pushing breaking on the masses. The creation of Fanatics Live makes that obvious, but it doesn't take a genius to see how breaking is hugely profitable for the card manufacturers because it keeps wax prices artificially high. WIthout breaking, there is no explanation for why wax prices have gotten so out of whack with singles prices. There would be no rational market explanation for it.
    That's one of my issues with Cards HQ - on the one hand I like Geoff. I think he's trying to do positive things for the hobby and you can see in his videos he's passionate about it and enjoys getting kids involved, but his putting breaking rooms into his store bugs me for the reasons you mentioned about breaking in general. From a business perspective, it's probably necessary to support the square footage he has and the overhead that entails, as his breaking will bring in profits for the store when the foot traffic is down. But it still rubs me wrong.

    Fanatics Live Terms & Agreement says upon Account Registration that "You represent that you are at least 18 years old and legal age to form a binding contract and not a person barred from using the Platform under the laws of the United States, your place of residence or any other applicable jurisdiction." They place the onus on the registrant. Also, their marketing of Topps Hobby Rip Night is geared more towards younger aged folks than it is to adults. Where is the actual age verification on the fanatics live registration???? I didn't see it.

    I think u bring up great points and I agree with you. I also think Fanatics is completely awful in every way for the hobby in general! I don't feel like Rubin is a very good dude. This is all about Greed in the end! I can't stand breakers for the most part, especially ones screaming and yelling and acting like idiots. I hate breaking! I really do. It's just completely made things into something I personally don't really care for. Again, I'm not saying this about everyone, but a really big majority. And I guess u could say that opening cards in general is gambling anymore, but breaks would certainly fall under that category I'd say. Breaks aren’t that bad, it’s the breakers themselves that have made it that way. At its core it’s not any different than buying packs from Walmart. But I can see how it might get out of hand if you let it. Breaking began between friends, splitting the cost of a product they couldn’t afford by themselves. How it’s a huge industry with folks bringing in multiple six figures a year . These breakers are making 50-75 % profit off every box if not more. It’s gotten out of hand.

  • @daedricgaedric1505
    @daedricgaedric1505 9 месяцев назад +1

    Yeah the hobby is all about the money. Ripping boxes and packs is a total scam and the sooner people realize that and stop buying the better. People need to realize that apps like What Not and buying into breaks is extremely addicting and companies will attempt to make profit on that. Personally, I think breakers are very scummy and ruin the hobby. And you’re right, you don’t know what the breaker knows. They could say “buy into this break for x amount over market value for the chance of getting this super rare case hit” but maybe they’ve already ripped a few boxes and pulled that case hit ya know? Everyone is just chasing that dopamine hit and breakers and companies are just monetizing that. It’s sad.

    Geoff Wilson would 1000% let his kid join a break if it meant more views. He has that kid ripping boxes of cards most adults can't even afford. He and his type of view/clout chasers have changed this hobby for the worse. Breakers have made it worse. The whole hobby has become gambling. Ripping boxes is gambling. Breaking is gambling. It's not about collecting and Mr. Wilson and those types have been the biggest proponents of chasing the big hit instead of collecting what you like or the player you like.

    I agree with what you are saying, however, let’s look at it from all points. If a child can go into a retail store and buy a pack or a blaster of cards, is this no different than breaking online. The odds are just as poor for retail purchases. So the only difference we see here is one is a physical version and another is digital. The only way I can compare this is, if online breaking is digital gambling, then retail purchases are lottery tickets. If the odds are inappropriate and instill gambling problems in one format, it does it in another. So this raises the question. Should they do something about card opening, or breaking, in general as they would with gambling and lottery tickets. A very weird perspective. I agree with you though, it does create horrible habits at a young age, but the way of which you consume your poison should be viewed no different from each format.

    • @printsig3576
      @printsig3576 9 месяцев назад +5

      You buy a pack or a blaster, you get what's in it, good or bad. You go into a break, and you can get nothing. Also, the thought of it being a lottery ticket, is only based upon what you're hoping to get. We have glorified the big hit. Collecting can take on so many forms and when i buy a pack, I generally enjoy that process. And unlike a lottery ticket, it's not all or nothing. The issue is when Fanatics runs the breaks AND also prices the product. They can price everyone out of the primary market and force them to their higher value (to them) breaks. They know the power of the hobby. Most of us went crazy in 2020. For the only time since I was 7 years old, I basically stopped buying. A lot of us made irrational value decisions. Breaks are generally irrational value decisions. Get them at a young age to feel the power of a "LFG!" I think it's shameful too.

    • @isaacgallardo22
      @isaacgallardo22 9 месяцев назад

      @@printsig3576 Very good points. I too dislike that they are essentially monopolizing the market. To be honest, what's stopping them from rigging the boxes in their favor, not even that, but they don't even necessarily need to tell us anything, this could all be behind the scenes. The biggest thing for me is, the consumers spending and experience is all dependent on their own blind trust in the company. That's that drives me crazy. There isn't any sort of body that holds them accountable, or even questions what and how they do things or conduct business. Wild times.

    The whole hobby is gambling. The odds really can’t be trusted on the boxes either when they obviously have influencer boxes. Degen’s is one of the worse gamblers lol he’s chasing the big hits to sell not trying to put sets together or whatever else the hobby purist do. He tosses low value cards around like trash. Plus he keeps his channel family friendly. He’s pretty much promoting gambling to kids too.
