Maple Leaf Rag is one of the most recognisable piano pieces of all time. It was composed by legendary rag-time composer Scott Joplin some time before 1899 and led to a steady income in royalties for the rest of Joplin's life. This version is played much like Joplin used to: with small improvisation, fast and with swing. Scott Joplin's ragtime style varied immensely, from the slow and lyrical to the fast and exciting. This is one of our favourites, so we are sure you'll enjoy! We have linked the public domain sheet music for you all to learn from the sheets for free.

I don’t get why people say this is so hard to play. I can play it just fine! My WiFi connection might be bad but the video played for me
😂
Best comment.

Yes. Good. More of this. Perhaps the entertainer. Or pineapple rag. Both if possible. I approve this.

_Maple Leaf Rag:_
A typical Maple Leaf is known to be *Red*
Maple is a type of tree that can be found in *northern area* .
Its wood can be used to make *tool* handles.
A rag is a piece of cloth that has been worn by the *hardwork* .
A rag can also be used as a term for a *flag* .
What else is Red, is from a northern area, is known for its hardworking nature, and has tools on its iconic flag?
I'll let you guess.
Fucking Canada
Eh, you're really stretching on this. Therefore, I'm going to ruin it for you because I'm the worst type of person there is.
Maple leaves are the same as any other leaf- they lose their chlorophylls during colder seasons. In fact, the more known examples of maple leaves are orangish-red and more predominately orange than red and the original advertisement for the Maple Leaf Rag shows the leaf as green. The only reason why red maple leaves are famous is because of a design choice by the Canadian flag.
Maples are more documented in the northern sides of countries due to cultural and economic importance but they do grow on the entire eastern side of the US. A cursory search will show you that places like Iowa and Illinois have a significant amount of maples as well.
Actually, no. Maple tool handles are extremely rare when compared to hickory or ash wood handles. Most people only prefer maple as an alternative and finicky preference on longer tool handles, but eventually they run their course and reveal problems anyway. It's basically how people experiment with non-traditional materials like making an axe head out of a copper-tin alloy. To my knowledge, the only thing maple's actually being used for are things like baseball bats and stylistic choices on buildings.
Wrong type of rag- ragtime music was only called rag because it had a heavy emphasis on syncopation, or rag rhythms. Rags usually have nothing to do with being worn from "hard work." They're pieces of cloth torn off from other things or just torn and worn clothes altogether. Nothing to really do with hard work, although I concede hard work can produce rags. Still, wrong rag.
Where do you live where flags are called rags? I've never heard anything like that and neither has Google. Wouldn't that be insulting to a flag to call it a rag?
I was stretching this to make a pointless joke.
The dumb result of the words in *bold* (Red, Northern area, Tools, hardwork and flag) would be the USSR Flag.. you know.. for the "now make it russian" meme on the comment section of this channel.

I know, I completely got it. I've been here for a while.

I feel like this could pair well with Thomas the Tank Engine...
Gavin Verhoeven probably
great idea
I believe it’s in the same key
Bart Kymmell it is for a bit, but they both use different modulations all over. 😎
What if the old thomas the tank engine theme was meant to be ragtime?
The inspiration for the Super Mario World athletic theme. Love it!

To me it feels more like a recursive structure. It’s overall structure is AB, binary, with a coda at the end. Then within A there is ABA (ternary) and within B there is a different ABA (also ternary).
You've got the structure wrong, however you're correct in that there's four main parts
The structure of the Maple Leaf Rag is as follows:

Wow
In the words of Scott Joplin himself: “It is never right to play ragtime fast”
Which is my excuse for only playing it at 75% speed in relation to this video. And honestly, you can hear a lot more of the syncopation and harmony when it’s played slightly slower as well. But that’s just my opinion on it.
You beat me to it 😊. This is way too fast but still fun. Been playing ragtime since I was 9.
Holy crap, I did NOT know Scott Joplin made this! Where have I been all these years??? Thank you for the amazing listen! :D
Who else learnt in (surprisingly) less than 10 years?
Soumil I did surprisingly
Me
Tbh it is not that hard. Once you learn the right hand without looking at it, it becomes easy because you have to only focus on the left hand which hops usually between couple of sounds
@@vaiski1845 I found the opposite worked for me
I am learning this piece and I’ve only played piano for 3 years and I just finished the b section in a month
Edit: sorry for sounding like a simply piano ad
I’ve officially learned up till 1:30 :D. Love this one. Really fun to play
just got there, did you end up finishing the song
I just started piano a month ago so I can learn this song.
My mom used to play quite often when I was a kid. Absolutely adore this song
When I searched up Maple Leaf Rag on easy, this was the first thing that came up.
Hmmm

This should be hard not easy
Why on earth would you be looking for an easy version of scott joplins maple leaf rag
@@sirpizza2044 Why not? I search it too
I love the piano sound. It has a crisp attack and nice reverb.
Thanks! After about three weeks of practice, and watching your vids, I can finally play maple leaf rag fast :) this video is much appreciated
I’ve gotten up to 0:40 and I love playing this piece it sounds amazing great video sheet music boss! 👍
Snobs on this video: “omg it too fast it need to be at March tempo >:(“
The tempo of the piece: 120
Nah this is just a bit too fast.
I have been learning this song for like half a year and i can still only play the first half, before the chords go really far apart, i can play both hands of the second half separately but not yet together. Its really hard, especially without taking aby classes ever, i just have a piano at home lol
0:16 best part
Ragtime is so much fun to play! The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag (As well as other Ragtime pieces) are some of my favorites. It's fun to just bust them out on a random piano.
You guys never cease to amaze! I’d love you guys to do some more Legend of Zelda stuff, like maybe Midna’s Lament from Twilight Princess or something from Breath of the Wild... Keep up the awesome, 🅱️oss 🅱️ois!
I remember learning this a couple years ago, forgot how to play it but I’m definitely going to relearn it.
"now make it russian" comments incoming...
Felix Ertl GOOD IDEA
Felix Ertl Can you make it russian?
Felix Ertl Now make this Russian. Lmao
Brace yourself.
Russian comments need to stop...
Time for German comments yäh?
Scott Joplin was such a genius
I can definitely see the inspiration that Koji Kondo took from this when making the Mario world athletic theme.
Samuel McGee lolllll
More Joplin please!! I absolutely adore Bethena: A Concert Waltz
After Listening To Several People And Versions Of This TIMELESS Wonderful Scott Joplin Masterpiece, The Quicker Tempo Of This Song (So Far), Has Been The BEST ONE I've Heard. I Don't Know If It Was Played Slower And Then Mechanically Sped Up, But It Sounds VERY LIVELY Indeed. A FAST SET OF FINGERS Played This Song FOR SURE. BRAVO And 5-STARS For This One, And Saved To Hear Many Times Again...
Just so everyone knows, watch this video at 75% speed. Joplin's written tempo for the song was 88 beats a minute. My metronome put this rendition at 240bpm, so significantly faster. It's much easier to learn going slower too.
Oh cool!
Was looking for a comment like this. It's ragtime, not run-me-raggedtime!
Written tempo is 100bpm. This is still a bit fast
the fact that i played it at age 13 cause i wanted to learn it at school makes me feel so powerful, if only i could still remember it perfectly
Jesus, Scott Joplin was a musical genius
Can any of you believe or imagine this actually being the first version of rock n roll to ever exist? Our modern badass stems form this beauty! :)
CANT...CONTROL...NEED. ..TO....DANCE!

Jonathan Zhao, at least I have a life unlike you. Your life only consists of being a imature child. And I'm sure you are just trying to act "cool" or something but your probly just a little boy who thinks he can do whatever he wants just because no one actually knows who you are. But Artsy Scrub and I won't take that. You probably think it's so "funny" what your saying. But let's be realistic... IT'S NOT. That being said. GET A LIFE!
I do not recall that little intro bit in Joplin's original score- but boy does it sound good
MOAR SCOTT JOPLIN PLEASE!!!
Thank you so much for this! Maple Leaf Rag was one of my favorite pieces when I started learning the piano.
You enter a saloon. Everyone stops doing what they were doing to look straight at you. Then, they return to their businesses. Five people are playing cards. Somebody's definitely cheating. The bartender has been cleaning the same glass for 2 hours now. Then, at that exact moment, someone shoots in the direction of the piano player, only missing him by about a foot. Then, THIS song starts playing.
Super glad to see Joplin on the channel! Maybe Fig Leaf Rag could be next?
The entertainer next, or some ray Charles plz :)
The best part of this to me is how it's familiar visually, which I just realized is because the video matches the player piano roll we had that played this when I was a kid.
Loved it! You guys should do more jazz! Maybe there's even some Soviet Jazz in there somewhere. 😂
Finnigan Sargeant this isn't jazz
jacob Shillito actually it is
It’s ragtime
Gamer Lord 2019 no it’s ragtime
The song here seems to be a bit too fast...If you listen to the original Joplin song you'd see it's much slower which is how its "meant to be played"...but its ragtime not jazz but birthed jazz
Opened up my history textbook today. This song was the topic of the introduction to the chapter I was reading. Coincidences are amazing.
Anyone else getting Thomas the tank engine vibes off this?
yep
1:07
I got Monsters Inc. vibes at the very beginning.
I had a friend that could actually play this, mad respect
1. More of these please.
2. The intro made me kinda mad, cause i thought my headset was broken. lol
Nathan Adhitya lol same, the intro😂😂
Yes I know I’m late (._. )
Yes! This channel needs more Scott Joplin!
0:04 was that part added?
Yes, it is SMB’s improvisation
This is one of those pieces of music that’s heard in many different places. I, in particular, associate it with Disneyland. It’s one of the background music tracks near the main entrance once you get in, where all the parades happen. I think much if not all of the background music in that section of the park was likely composed by Joplin.
Oh, another piano tutorial, just LEAF me alone... :)

I love that piece! We have a lot on just now, but we HAVE to cover it sometime.
Wow, thx man, You replied me, i don't believe kskssk, ok, i can wait ksks, thx again, and good bye
I commented on the post 10 seconds ago and then see this at the top of my subscriptions tab. Good job, me.
Could you do the version of Scarborough Fair that is played as a main theme in the anime "Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?" (sukasuka for short).
An actually good suggestion. I'd love to hear a cover for that.
Mmmmmm yes more of this good and wonderful joplin music
Oh shit. I learned this song from sheet music and looking at it in synth makes me wonder how tf I learned it.
This is why life is worth living
Hello, how are you? Sorry my bad English, is that I'm from Argentina and I'm using Google Translate, hahaha !! Anyway, I ask you could you climb Pine Apple Rag from Scott Joplin? I would be very grateful! Sorry for the inconvenience and greetings from Argentina!
Thinking about doing it! :) -Andrew
I love that intro

Yesss scott joplin is the best! more of his music for sure!
Can you do house of the rising sun please?
Lol rude auditions
this has to be one of the hardest piano tutorials on this channel
Add .75 speed it sounds like what you hear and I saloon
Well normal speed is what’d you hear in the saloons of 1899.
When people force me to dance but they could just use this and it puts me in the right mood to show those dance moves
this piece is more harder than the entertainer. 😂😂 gotta start practicing slowly!
It faster but easier because the jumps are minimum in the first half. The entertainer's first part with the triple notes right hand is hard to play accurately.
For those who keep spamming the comment section wanting a russian rag version,There's a rag called Russian Rag on youtube and Tom Brier And Carl Sonny Leland did an epic duet of it.
Is it just me or is the tempo a tiny bit too fast for this piece ? Especially for a tutorial ?
Still a good arrangement though.
You could always set the playback speed to .75 or. 5 if it is too fast.
Yeah I tried that and I don't recommand it. I meant it when I said "a tiny bit".
I tried a few edits in audacity and I think this arrangement sounds best at 90% of this video's tempo. Of course it's only my opinion.
Gabriel Tomasini honestly, I really like it at the tempo here. Makes it seem incredibly lively.
Even Joplin said to not play it fast.
Yes I agree- it would be more helpful 2 learners to do a slower version and make it work.
I like some of the Russian stuff, but I feel that it’s getting old. This is like a breath of fresh air.
Vodka rag incoming...
From scott putin
I Could make something like that
Molotov cocktails, anyone?
I LOVE THIS SONG
It’s so wierd to think Arthur Rubinstein was 25 when this piece was composed
Wow I never thought of that, when you put it into perspective it is indeed weird
Please do a medium Entertainer, this was all I ever wanted and more, keep up the hard work!
