- Just changing the way a cylinder is honed can impact the performance of the engine. The surface finish of the bore plays a critical role in how well the piston ring seals. How can you know if you have the correct surface finish?
The Mitutoyo SJ-210 Profilometer measures surface finish, and this video takes you step by step through the process of setting up and using this amazingly handy device.
This video was part of the Engine Performance Expo. For more great engine tech, check out @Engine Performance Expo , which returns LIVE on RUclips on January 13th & 14th, 2023.
The detailed surface finish values of the extreme plateau hone as measured on an SJ-210 are: Rpk of 10 micro inches, a Rk of 44 micro inches and a Rvk of 72 micro inches.

Great video Keith, thanks for sharing this valuable information.
I have alot better understanding of the Data information.
Take care, Ed.
Thanks!
Great info, thank you.
We hope it helps!
If my reader is not reading the 116, but say 114 and I want to tell my machine that it IS 116 since that is what is should be reading...is there a way to change the reading in the machine and then run the test again where it would ideally THEN read it as 116? I hope that makes sense. TIA
is there a way to adjust the orientation of the stylus? the one I'm using looks like its slightly off the the side when looking at the detector from the front.
Not that we are aware of
Can this tool work on bigger cylinder liners, like 260 mm and above?
Yes, absolutely
How do you change the units from micro meters to micro inch?
It is in the settings menu
@@TotalSeal if I go to "Switch units", it gives me one option of units which is "mm". Any idea why it only shows one unit?
I am using this profilometer to measure surface deviations on a piston. While taking identical measurements without moving the environment or changing any settings, I am observing a gradual drift along the X-axis when I superimpose the graphs on top of each other. What could be the reason?
Contact Digital Metrology for help with a question like that.
My stylus is scratching my calibration reference and giving me a reading .45uin
Thanks Keith. I let the battery go dead and it went back to default parameters and I forgot how to put it back. Thanks
That’s why me made this video!
How to convert Lambda c from in to m
Hi, where can I obtain the adapter to use in my cylinder bores 82-90 mm bore diamater
Not sure about a small bore adapter. Typically, the drive unit is located outside the small bore cylinders and the stylus reaches into the bore.
Sir I need starting setting of sj 210 machine
When performing the scratch test for calibration, how far off should the reading be? I am using the standard 116 calibration block and want to know how close it should be reading to the 116.14. Thank you!
If you're using the Mitutoyo reference specimen it came with it should be very close (115/117 range). Like the video showed you may need to do the update (red button) of the calibration a few times but it should end up close to your expected value.
Yes, im using the one that it came with. @@BlackMercury3030
Boy oh boy have I had a hard time finding a machine shop that first off even has a profilometer of this level. Second work with me or my engine cause its a Toyota 4cyl. Third have a honing station and stones able to achieve the correct results. I called 62shops
That says something right there! You might want to contact Rottler to see if they can tell you who has one of their honing machines near you.
I tried that a while back but both they and I were a bit to busy to get that figured out. I finally found a fairly new shop in Watertown SD. Also tell Lake to look for a RUclips link I emailed him a on October 10th.
Any idea how to reset it to factory specs?
There is a factory reset option in the system settings menu.
PLEASE clarify and elaborate on the stylus selection (5um vs 2um) and corresponding Lambda "C" values in the profilometer setup. They DO NOT produce the same values on the same surface. Also, please indicate how your bore finish recommendations are specified accordingly. The bore surface numbers are essentially meaningless without the proper equipment setup and measurement parameters clearly defined. Thanks!
The SJ-210 comes standard with a 5um stylus, and we set them up with a Lambda C (cut off length) of .1
That’s our recommended set up, and the published surface finish recommendations are based on those set up parameters.
Rpk 10-15 micro inches
Rk 35-40 micro inches
Rvk 50-60 micro inches
