When I first heard that Glen Campbell into I knew this was something very special so I decided to share it. I'm not one who cries easily but I have to admit that the extended intro on this presentation is very emotional. The amount of respect towards the musicians and song writers on this televised special is something not seen anymore. They really did pay tribute to the roots of Country Music while showcasing the latest artists (at the time).

I know that every person has their own opinion regarding what music means to them. I have to admit that I am not a big fan of Country music. Regarding the comments left on this and other Country music television specials I have yet to edit or moderate any of them. They are all positive and it is a strange feeling knowing that I am currently 42 and some of the viewers are twice my age.
I was 12 when this was on. It was when I was 12 that I discovered record albums from the public library. Meet the Beatles, The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, That's all it took for me. I started taking guitar lessons in June 1978. My first guitar was a 1964 Gibson mahogany LG-0 acoustic parlor. The best guitar you could ever get as a 12 year old! Don't start with electric. Why? You'll know why, trust me. Give it two years on acoustic.
My Lord my Lord,, where did we loose our way. In country music, education (morals, common sense)..This is such a memory of a better time in all aspects of life. Call me sentimental but I'm old enough to remember a different time & the music speaks volumes.
I'm right there with you my friend! Every time I hear these old songs I get all sorts of memories running thru my mind. Totally agree with the idea that we have lost something over the last few years.
I would have really liked to live the glorious era of country music. Although I am not North American, I have never visited the US, I love this music, these great artists whom I listen to daily from Argentina, where there are several crazy people who have been spreading Country Music for some years.
This was when country music was at its best, real talent! A pure pleasure to lived in this time, nothing today can come close to comparing with it. Just pure great entertainment. I love it.
Oddity Archive brought me here, and I guess it's because of where I grew up, but I really do like older country music, it's very much comfort music to me.
The other aspect of country entertainment that is lacking today is the comedy of such greats as Minnie Pearl. Loved that lady and her down home way of looking at things.Really miss her!!
I was under 10yrs when listening to to that song outside on the home made swings. I never ever forget that song!! Or the song !! " How is heaven I want to see my daddy i know he's there " our fathers would sing thoughs songs, what a beautiful memory. And Charlie my 3 sisters & Uncle were driving home from church when he played that song , he even drove passed our for us to finish hearing it.❤
So many different different styles one or two bars and you knew was going to be next, be it country , rock , or pop. What a wonderful 30- -40 years all at once. Reminds me of an old song .-where have all the flowers gone. If internet had one thing it shone for its presence , it’s brought back this - beautiful thing of the past. So many so many so many diff styles, just listen to crystal gale, then along comes Connie smith, Dolly Parton, only touching on a few. How Glenn can sing the old songs to perfection, then has his own style, so many of them done that way. So many sang Jimmie Rodger’s , Hank williams only to come with a style of their own. Country really died when Randy Travis health came on scene and Keith whitely passed. George jones sang who’s going to fill their shoes, when I heard Keith whitely I said he’s going to fill one of those shoes at 29 years old. Vince gill, George strait , Allan Jackson is all we really have left in that good old pure country into your heart feeling we have left. No I haven’t for gotten about Allison Krause or Laura Vincent, had to stop somewhere . One note ray Charles what a gifted beautiful musician, he sang what ray Charles wanted to sing, not what they wanted him to sing. However if you lived in this era ,I’m not telling you anything you didn’t already know.----a wonderful past, brought into the present.---we thank you
This is one of my most watched uploads and it is no mystery why. Things have changed a lot not just regarding music but television as well. The video and audio quality is quite low. There might be a better quality recording out there on either the Beta or U-Matic video formats. Hopefully it will be uploaded to RUclips someday.
Thank you for your wonderful comment. I was not born yet when this was originally broadcasted. I was 10 years old back in 1992. The media that one watches during our childhood is very special. No matter what the decade or generation. I still own the videotapes with this recording. Thanks to RUclips it can be enjoyed by anyone. This show was very well made. Modern day musical shows should be envious of this broadcast. A lot of musical history is celebrated and respected. There is no profanity or degrading content. Lyrics based on faith are welcomed on this show which is very rare in the here and now.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for uploading this. I watched when it first aired back in '78, and have been wanting to see it again for 44 years. Dolly would have been on top of the world around the time this was taped, as "Here You Come Again" would have been at the top of both the country charts and pop charts, and the album was becoming a megahit. It's a shame that Mother Maybelle Carter didn't appear in the Carter Family segment (she must have been feeling under the weather), as she would have been still alive at the time (she would pass away in October 1978), particularly since this ended up being something of a historical record.
No problem. I own more vintage recordings with wonderful stars of our past like Elvis, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Johnny Cash and John Wayne. I do plan to share them soon.
Thank you for you comment. Country music has changed, ranged, adapted and has been reinvented with the passing decades. By the time this TV special was broadcasted Country Music had already changed significantly. The wonderful thing about Country Music is the fact that it is still written, composed, performed, sold, broadcasted and streamed. Not every musical style has thrived as much as Country. Some are no more than fads and live for less than a single decade. In my opinion music in general is something very human and is very special and cherished. Much more than storybooks, films, plays and paintings. Music is very flexible and can be enjoyed while performing any task including and not limited to making love. As for Country it has emotion, respect, appreciation and soul. It has to be arguably the single most American music. I myself consider myself a Rock and Metal music fan which exists thanks to the music genre known as The Blues. Yet I have to show Country the respect that it deserves. As for filling the shoes of the musicians that pass away. It is impossible. Anyone who has had a family member pass away knows this. As long as one remembers a loved one they will be alive in our hearts. The same can be said about the music performed by performing artists, writers and producers of Country music who have passed away. As long as their songs are still enjoyed they will be alive in our hearts.
I think Roy Rogers was a much better singer than Gene AutreyI saw both of them in the movies when I was just a small school girl. Mama would give us a dime and a nickel. We stopped at the Confectionery to get penny candy with the nickel and the dime got us into the Showhall. I remember hearing Hank Williams on my mom's little red radio! that's when I became a country music fan. The "Old Country". I enjoy seeing all the people on The Grand Ole Opry I get on my computer. It is so great to see and hear so many of the people I remember that are no longer with us on this earth. I am now 86 and it is still "my music"
Tammy Wynette was great. I wish the Rambos were part of these shows, but I guess Dottie must have been pretty strict herself about compromising her faith. She wrote hundreds of songs. Dottie, her husband Buck, and their daughter Reba was the final and longest lineup group, " The Singing Rambos", or just "The Rambos". Reba Rambo's 1st or 2nd solo album- *Reba Rambo Songs My Mama Taught Me* in the early 70's is one I play often. It's on RUclips ( along with many of the Rambo's live videos, check out "The Rambos New Shoes" ). Dottie is in the Song Writer's Hall of Fame. She wrote many famous songs for other artists as well. Google: "Throughout her 60+ year career, Rambo wrote more than 2,500 songs. Her legendary songs have been recorded by music icons such as Elvis Presley, Barbara Mandrell, Carol Channing, Whitney Houston, and Dolly Parton."
A favorite singer of mine was the late PENNY DEHAVEN. Penny came to work clubs in Milwaukee a lot. She should have been a bigger star but she did have some success.
I simply captured the 44 year old videotape to a digital format and uploaded it here. I still have the original videotape (in my kitchen) which would have been totally obliterated if played back 10,000+ times. This was very easy compared to the work, respect and appreciation that this show gave to Country Music back in 1978. Things have changed very much.
@@renegonzalez6755 we still wouldn't have seen it if you didn't upload it here on youtube that is easily accessible to all of us. And we thank you for that. Im 18, but I love traditional country music better than the ones we have now. Country music did change a lot throughout the years.

For foreigners, Yankees, and other folks who aren't familiar with real country music or what we call "hard country", this video isn't it. This is what's called " crossover". It's music made for the pop market but mislabelled. This is alleged country music made by and for people who really don't like country music. Recording and broadcasting corporate executives like to latch on to current and passing trends and cash in on the temporary popularity of the Glen Campbells, Charlie Riches, and Lynn Andersons of this world. Listen if you can stomach it but realize it registers maybe 10% on the scale of containing the elements that make music country. Some of these are theme, song structure where each line tells a story, a "Tennessee Tenor" harmony, typical instruments and basic chord backing to a lead solo, and a steady beat. Much of the "crossover" product is about as country as Barbra Streisand or Michael Buble but not as good voices. Dean Martin did a better job with this genre than these so called country singers.
