My dad took his prom date here in 1963. He was sharing his memories with me just today. He came from Egg Harbor City, and in those days it was a big deal. I told him I was going to look it up and he seemed doubtful. Wait until he gets my email/share. I hope it makes him smile, and have even more vivid memories. Thank you so much for posting. It's so nice to be able to re-live our cherished memories.

My mother was Luana who danced there for many years and we are Hawaiian as we are from the Big Island of Hawai`i. Hawai`ians were exploited for many years and now are almost extinct. My mother passed on in 1990 but we still have her memorabilia and some costumes. It was only a show as real Hula is not done in cellophane skirts nor is it portrayed the way it was at the Hawaiian Cottage. It is actually a sacred art.

Was Lani Tikki somebody too? Circa 1978???? We danced also, but we were the cellophane skirt wearers

I grew up in the Hawaiian Cottage! I and have so many fond memories of my mom and dad entertaining the crowds with an exciting polynesian floor show. Although it was not authentic, it was entertainment. Today, my mother Kumu Lani Lee and I share the grace of hula`auana on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii.
Mahalo for sharing and thanks for the memories.
      Aloha nui loa.

My grandmother used to love going there for company banquets. She would tell us all about it,,,for days! As a kid, I used to love riding by the Hawaiian Cottage at night because they had these flaming embers or torches lit up. I thought that was the coolest thing!

Unfortunately, no. It was destroyed by fire on July 1, 1978. The exact demolition date is unknown, but there is currently an Olive Garden there.

Back when Cherry Hill still had the Ellisburg Circle and other South Jersey circles. Grew up and lived in the Point of Woods area by Cooper School for 25 years before relocating to the Midwest. Every time I go back to visit family I wonder what happened to the Cherry Hill I grew up in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. Seems very congested and overrun by folks coming in from PA to do their shopping at the Cherry Hill Mall and other shopping areas.

Absolutely, grew up in C.H in the early 80s..sad seeing my landmarks I visited torn down and built over. Love learning all the history this town has to offer. I live one town over and work for the telephone company so I'm in cherry hill quite often.

If I can get the photographs together, I'll post them. We celebrated my grandfather's 65th Birthday there, which would have made it January of 1967, so he could see the "hoochy-coochy" girls for his birthday party. As was apparently customary, according to many of the comments left, Leilani, the beautiful headlining entertainer, brought all of the kids up onto the stage for the Twist Contest. My cousins, newly emigrated to the States from Italy, and my sister and I danced like it was our job. I still remember Leilani's hands on my hips guiding them into more of a rotation than just a wiggle back and forth as I was probably doing to try to imitate my cousins and the other kids. My grandfather had a great time and kick out of our big number as the audience clapped and cheered and we stole the show. I'm sure I was as big a ham as they served up for dinner, the only things missing would have been the pineapple rings and maraschino cherries. I hope more people leave their memories to share. Happy reminiscing and let's Twist Again.
P.S. Today, Pop would have been 120 years old.

My six Italian uncles from South Philly were the "Hawaiian" lounge band. One had a double necked guitar and one had a guitarorgan.

My 1st job as a bus boy then waiter when I turned 18, worked there from 1975 to 1976. Larry was the head chef; Vince was the Pastry Chef and who can forget Geno the bartender. Dotty and Dominic were the waitress and waiter in the top part of the main dining room. Joe Zuchi the owner's son in law hired me and Walt Sienko was the Maitre Di. Great memories.

Remember when Joe Zucci brought the band into his office and asked if we played that "loud, rock & roll sh**?" I said "No, as a matter of fact we... " and he said, "Good, 'cause if you do you'll never play again!" He said that Frank Sinatra Jr. was "a bum, I threw him out!". Mr. Zucci had that giant desk that looked like an aircraft carrier flight deck! Remember when I "detuned" that Hawaiian singer's guitar and Gary had to tune it for him on stage? "I think I've been sabotaged" he said....

Can't find it's exact address. People always just give it's general location, so does anyone have it's actual address or at least what business is there now??? Also, looking for same with Rickshaw Inn and Valentino's.

It was where the Olive Garden is today on Rte 38 by the Church Road circle. The Rickshaw Inn was on Rte 70 across from the Racetrack and adjacent to Subaru's corporate office (formerly the Latin Casino)... Valentino's was on Haddonfield Road across from the Racetrack. I don't live in the area any more so I don't what's there now.

Another manifestation of the kooky fad for Hawaiian / South Seas bars and restaurants in the USA (and internationally, to a lesser degree) of the 1950s - 1970. By the '70s, such things were seen as out of style.
And now there are almost no original ones left.
