  • “Should I use a blade or a mallet style putter?”
Back in the day, this was hardly even a question. Most golfers opted for true blades, such as the Wilson 8802 or Titleist Bullseye, or what we now call blade putters, such the Ping Anser or Scotty Cameron Newport.
In recent years, however, more forgiving offerings have flooded the putter market and become an increasingly viable option. Mallet-style putter designs provide higher MOI (moment of inertia), thus reducing the negative effects of off-center hits.
Professionals and amateur golfers alike are choosing to play mallet putters more often than ever before, and there’s a few reasons for that. First is availability. Nearly every putter maker now has a large variety of mallet offerings, providing more options in this category than ever. Also, mallet putters are now being built with different neck/hosel designs so that there’s a variety of toe hang options, as well. This means that mallet putters can now fit a wide range of stroke styles, from straight-back straight-through to a strong arc.
Of course, there are still a number of golfers who opt for the blade-style putters that have been popular for decades. Some choose to use blade putters because that’s what they’re comfortable with, and for others the blade-style is simply a better match for their stroke.
Listen to what Brad Faxon and Brandel Chamblee have to say regarding choice...

I've gone from a TM spider EX mallet being face balanced to my prior putter, the TM Soto blade putter with toe hang.
I think the feel on the spider was a touch better but for me personally getting the ball starting on the correct line is easier with the blade.
    My 2 cents.

THAT has been proven wrong now. Toe hang or blades keep the blade open to help releasers not miss left.

You're absolutely right, no question! A classic example is Lauren Roberts and his Cobra Greg Norman U Model "Zing" shape putter, which has a pretty extreme toe-hang (5:30ish). He used this putter almost his entire career. As I'm sure you know, he is the poster boy for a straight back and through stroke.

I've done a lot of side by side testing and I don't believe high moi putters perform any better on a mishit. They feel better because they don't twist on impact. I can make putts off the toe of an 8802 easily. It feels awful, but the ball is gone before the face twists open. I settled on a TM Soto, which is a really nice Anser/Newport style putter.

I was formally addicted to 8802 style putters and I still am. I hate to say it, but I probably own 35 or 40 of them! 🥴
Sometimes it's nice to look down and not see too much going on. Even the Anser style putter I use doesn't have any alignment aids or movable weights.
      Simple like me! 😂

I feel like that's true...feels much better but I'd doubt there's any noticeable difference especially with amateurs...I think putting is a lot of confidence, whatever you have in your hands if you like it, you'll putt better...Tigers scotty is not anything special by today's standards but he putts lights out with that thing I'd guess better than a lot or the newer stuff

Gangster move, Tiger walks over, asks JT to see his putter. Sets it down, looks at it, looks at his and says to JT "Is the face supposed to be that closed?". Then just walks off.

When exactly did the definition of "blade putter" change to mean heel/toe weighted anser style putters?

Is there a specific difference in technique blade vs malot

    • @RollYourRock
      @RollYourRock  3 месяца назад +1

While the basic principles of putting remain the same regardless of if you use a blade vs mallet putter, there are some differences to keep in mind with putting with a mallet style putter; alignment, stroke length, sweet spot, and feel.
Be sure to take advantage of the alignment lines on the top of the putter head to ensure that you hit the golf ball squarely at your intended target.
You'll also need to adjust your stroke length seeing as mallet style putters are heavier and have a large club head size.
While the larger sweet spot can be advantageous, don't rely on it. Still strive for center contact to maximize distance and accuracy.
Finally, as I mentioned above, the feel of a mallet style putter is different than that of a blade style putter, so take some time to practice and get to know how your mallet style putter feels.
