    Hi, good video as usual. I used to drive these locomotives. We were one of the first depots to receive these locos when they were introduced and frequently had Brush technicians ride along with us. They are an amazing bit of kit IMHO far superior to the class 59 in every way except reliability.
    The third gauge from the right is the slow speed speedometer. if you look closely you will note that it only reads up to 3 mph. It only activates when the slow speed control is switched on typically when unloading Merry Go Round trains.
    The sand isolation switch is used only when running light loco. They are also fitted to class 59 which has a similar automatic sanding system.
    The reason it's there is if the loco to suffer wheel-slip on all axles while running light then the sand could insulate the loco from the track causing loss of detection from the track circuits. This means that the loco would simply disappear from the section. This actually happened at Westbury in the early days of the class 59 causing the fleet to be withdrawn while they investigated the incident.
    Finally IIRC the airflow meter measures air flowing in the train brake pipe not the brake cylinders.
    I hope this information helps and keep up the good work.

      +jock678 Thanks for all of the information, that's really useful! I appreciate you taking the time to write this comment, and now I know something new about Class 59s and Class 60s :)

      Great loco's when got no faults quite cabs and able to start heavy trains with ease in difficult conditions
      Just a note thought Auto sand iso does lot more than isolate sands it isolates most of the wheel creep traction control its handy if your having power problems . We often run them with auto sand isolated with problem loco's on loaded trains and they are still surprisingly good at starting very heavy trains . We did have problems early on with fluctuating amps light engine with auto sands in but cured with new software we only use auto sand iso for getting round power problems and normally leave in light engine . Also in early days they would go much faster than 60 mph ( pre Qtron days) but later software limited them to about 62 mph

    Slow Speed control is used for MGR operations given they were used heavily on coal trains to power stations and replaced the Class 58 on such services. The control allowed the driver to set the speed at which loading and unloading trains through the MGR hoppers, previously drivers had to manually throttle the locomotive in order to maintain the speed of 3mph. However, the Class 60 being vastly underpowered they were later moved to more general freight duties. Also, airflow meter shows the flow through the air pipe not the brake cylinders.

      purplesmurf2010 Thanks for the info! I wasn't sure what the slow speed control was for exactly. Very interesting :)

    Great guide PTGRail . The class 60 is a loco I feel I should be driving more often.
    I usually use the train length button at any point where I need to know where the rear of the train is, it's pretty useful when shunting for example.

      @PTGRail  9 лет назад

      William Mankelow I rarely think to use the train length button, but I'm sure it's a useful feature :) I rarely drive freight journeys which is why I rarely drive freight locos. It's a nice loco though :)

    awesome video pete
    it's sad that ews/db have replaced these great locos with class 66s and 67s, I would love to see this one day in real life!

      Kirkinstein Thanks Kirkinstein. I have seen a few 60s in real life, and I remember seeing them as a kid coming through Lincoln quite a lot. But it's very rare to see one these days.

      Sad also that cab exterior design couldn't be made more attractive and not so bland.At least class 68/88 locos have a pleasing, attractive, creative look!

    Practically fascinating video :-). I like it :-). Those BR class 60 diesels are indeed interesting :-). I personally have never seen a class 60 in reality before but I hope to see a class 60 in hopefully the future or so but I don't know where I can exactly see a class 60 in this country :-/. Its complicated to figure out where I can see a class 60 in this country :-/. But never mind :-/. But I say you have vivid knowledge on the BR class 60 heavy freight working diesels :-). Well done :-). I personally think you should be a multi-millionaire for making videos like this explaining lots of interesting info hardly anybody even knows :-O :-). Well done :-). I think this video profoundly deserves creditability :-). I certainly do think so :-). Thanks ever so much for sharing this video and I'll look forward to checking out your channel in the far future :-). Alright then, have a nice evening and take care :-). See you later Profence :-).
    From your friend Foxy :-).

    Slow speed control not so much for yard work,but discharging wagon loads i.e coal merry go round duties!

    Great guide but I have a small query, will the 'UK Freight ' journeys be coming back?

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  9 лет назад

      Josh Thorpe Of course, more freight journeys will be recorded in the future. I just don't make too many of them as there tends to be a lot less to do when driving.

      Of course, I understand what you're saying and I suppose you have some little time at points to make RUclips videos anyway. However, thanks for your comment and I will keep my eyes peeled!

    Love your vids and you have inspired me to have a go at you tube myself
    Im a bit shy about this sort of thing but wanna have a go anyway
    Just need a decent microphone so i can do commentary.

      greyming0 Brilliant! I'm quite shy myself, and so it's actually take a lot of confidence for me to be able to actually make these videos. It's not personally been easy, but if you can do it then I think it's worth it :)

      PTGRail At the moment im just trying some test videos using shadowplay on pcars and my daughter has suggested using fraps to record but im unsure as to what editing software to use
      Someone has suggested sony vegas but i was wondering what you use ?

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  9 лет назад

      I use Sony Vegas Pro so I can definitely recommend it. I definitely don't recommend Windows Movie Maker! I also use Bandicam to record rather than FRAPS.

    Class 60’s are terrible for traction in my opinion. When I used to do S&T maintenance in a yard near Birmingham, Class 60’s would always be in and out of the yard and the train would always dispense sand over the points to gain traction and as a result would cause regular points failures.
