Personally, I love the abrupt cut at the end. He laughs, it's a perfect summation of his relief that she's alive and it all worked out, and it cuts to that high-energy, good-vibes earworm song. However, I can totally imagine the Netflix thing hurt it because you don't get to sit there in the little animated top-of-the-credits sequence (which, in general, I think reactors should sit through -- once the credits start scrolling usually there's nothing more to see and one can probably turn it off, but there are often little visuals during the early chunk before the scroll that I am sad to see people miss out on). There's a great part from Michael Crichton's novel Sphere that I always think of whenever I see an alien design in a movie. I don't have the book in front of me, but a character describes a class where the students are challenged to draw an alien. The character looks at the results and points at a little dot on one of the drawings and says, "what's that?" and the student says, "It's the anus." The character replies, "Why do we expect an alien to have one of these? What if the alien is like a bacteria? What if it's a mist? What if it's a color we've never seen before?" I always liked that bit because it was such an evocative illustration of how limited our thinking can be. The Arrival aliens are a good example of avoiding those cliches, and your wrap-up section on alien design reminded me of that part of the book.
So, this movie is based on the Japanese Light Novel "All You Need Is Kill". The story is almost completely the same, other than the method of how they get stuck in a loop, which also changes a twist near the end. The author said he got the idea based on video game save points, allowing you to reply events and get better by learning through trial and error.
About the kiss I always took it as Hendricks was what Rita was to Cage. Hendricks had it before, he lost it n found Rita. She most likely fell in love/grew an attachment with him after watching him die 300 times. So in her eyes she knew exactly how Cage felt bcuz she had already been through it before with Hendricks. But that's just me. 🤷 Edit : Also now thinking about it she probably even slept with Hendricks when Cage asks her about the sex stuff. So yea. 🤷
I agree with Mr. Riddler here. I can totally see Rita looking at Bill Cage and empathize with what he went through AND seeing Hendricks' face in her own mind when she goes in for the kiss before she runs into certain death. I feel it was a very unique "romance" that Emily Blunt portrayed with complexity. I overall liked the kiss scene rather than having a problem with it.
Yes, Groundhog Day was one of my favorite movies of all time. Like this one, they never mentioned how many times he re-spawned, but it must have been HUGE, lol!
Birthday is at month end! Thank you Jon! 🥳 PS. RUclips mobile didn't show me that the super thanks was attached to this comment so now I feel silly. Jon, thank you! That means so much, I appreciate it.
DUDE!!!! THAT WAS EPIC COOL!!! I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD TIP LIKE THAT, NOW I HAVE A WAY TO SAY "THANKS" DIRECTLY TO FAVORITE RUclipsRS ON OCCASIONS THAT ARE SPECIAL TO THEM! VIRTUAL FIST-BUMP COMING ATCHA.... THANKS!
29:25 At this moment, he could've just stick that device on his thigh in front of the general and then told the general the exact location of the Omega, then the general would've sent an army to Paris, the army would kill the Omega, "the end".
I just came across your reaction to this underrated movie and wanted to mention, though it may have been mentioned before, that someone did the math based upon learning rates of average people and came up with a number of between 35 and 41 YEARS worth of day restarts for him to be able to remember the day and literally commit every single step to memory. People get confused by him being in the helicopter at the end. The REASON was that they killed the Omega before he died - how is that for a time travel paradox?
One of my favourite action movies - I've got no idea what happened to it in cinemas, I stumbled across it a few years later and went "....wait this is actually awesome?" Bonus is that if you're trying to sell it to someone and they're a Cruise hater, you can convince them with "Sure, but he dies. A LOT." :D Loving your reaction vids as always kaiielle, you're always so invested in the movie. :)
This and The Last Samurai are the best Cruise movie in my opinion though he does have many more that I enjoy. The kiss I believe you have to realize Rita had the same experience with Hendrix when she had the power, so she knew what Cage's feelings were for her, the kiss was for him because she understood his feelings for her.
@@kaiielle After "the Last Samurai" my favorite Tom Cruise movie, the next on your list should be "Oblivion" a Sci-Fi with a mind blowing plot twist, then "Collateral" also staring Jamie Foxx where Tom Cruise plays a Very bad guy. a silly one with Cruise is "Knight and Day", with Cameron Diaz, it Is a spoof on Spy movies. I'm a Big Tom Cruise Fan !
Not sure how many Tom Cruise flicks you’ve seen, but the Mission Impossible series, A Few Good Men, Collateral, and Knight and Day are a favorite of mine.
This was the last time I saw a Tom Cruise vehicle where his character was interesting and had an actual arc. This movie has a near-perfect blend of action, humour and emotion, in my humble.
This is one of my favorite Tom Cruise movies. I recommend Minority Report and Tropic Thunder, if you haven't already seen those. Also Arrival, Nope, and Alien for excellent alien movies. Great reaction!!!
My favourite moment is when Cage gets the blood transfusion and Rita makes fun of his inability to get out of the straps. It shows the difference between memorization and previously learned skills. Cage has gotten very good at fighting a specific way, but he's still the non-combat media officer from the beginning of the film. Rita may have been a new recruit when she did her loop and became the Angel of Verdun, but she volunteered and went through basic training. She knows more about combat than just where mimics are hiding. Now let me really bake your brain with the time-loops: Right at the beginning of the first battle, one of J-squad says "they're not even supposed to know we're here". As viewers, we now know that the aliens were winning because of resetting the day. Obviously the beach invasion worked, the aliens reset, and they've kept resetting until they got to the upper hand with an ambush. So, here's the question: What changed that led to Cage getting the gift this time? Was Cage dying over and over with everyone else not realizing it? Why was there an alien alpha in that position this loop? What were the aliens trying to prevent that instead led to them making a mistake? * As an aside, if you want to watch credits on Netflix go to your account page and profile and select "Playback setting". When you turn off autoplay, credits play in full.
Great reaction. There's a movie called ALIEN NATION that I think you would really like. The concept is great and is different from what you've seen so far.
I first saw a reaction to this movie, about a month ago. I got about 10 minutes into the reaction, then shut it off and streamed the movie and watched it. It's a very good movie, I agree with you. I'm glad they gave the Leading characters a happy ending, along with all the supporting characters that we learned to love, like Bill Paxton. Thanks for mentioning the new series coming on HBO max, definitely will be watching out for that one too 🙂
Hey Kaielle. (This my second time watching this reaction). One question & one statement: Are you suggesting that you’ve never wanted to kiss someone after only spending a few hours with them? Your eyes look (especially) gorgeous in this video.
Thank you, and no not suggesting that. There have been other films where I'm all for the male and female lead sharing a smooch. Preference for platonic vs. romantic relationship depends heavily on who the characters are and what the story is.
@@kaiielle 👍🏾 Oh, and if it wasn’t already implied, I enjoyed rewatching. It’s a good one. Add Knight and Day to the list. (Imo) it’s a solid (action romantic comedy).

id bomb it out of existence ......You're not mentally equipped to fight this thing and you never will be ........kills Omega with handful of hand grenades
From what I've read, I think I recall that 'experts' have said it was probably tens to hundreds of thousands of times Cage repeated the day. I welcome anyone who knows more about it than I do :)
I totally agree with you on the kiss criticism… she’s so stand offish the whole movie, and because it’s two attractive actors on their last loop in a movie, there’s a kiss. She’s known him less than 24 hours and we’ve seen what she’s like on previous loops and on and on… it really left a sour taste in my mouth the first time I saw it, but yeah. The rest of the movie is so good, that just felt like a bad way to end it.

I just looked up Tom Cruise's filmography on IMDB and it says in 2024, he's in a sequel to this called, "Live Die Repeat and Repeat". Woo hoo!
