  • There are birches everywhere in Umeå. EVERYWHERE! Not only along the streets but also in art, salads and drinks. Originally they were planted to prevent fires but the city's love for the black and white tree trunks knows no end. However, they might not be as loved by the residents suffering from pollen allergy...

      Zach Elmquist I have been living for working reasons in sweden for almost 2 years. Swedish people are the most cold and awkward """happy""" people I have ever met. Half of them live alone. Check out "The Swedish theory of love" and you will now what I'm talking about

      We can be nice, comparing to other countries like Finland, or Japan. But we are.. well. Pretty awekward and loonely. We complain about being lonely but we dont do anything about it. For example, if entering a bus, you pick the seat that is as far away as possibly from any other person. And stuff like that.
      But if someone actually talks to us we are often nice, friendly and answer more than happily.
      But yeah, if you sit down beside us on the bus we think of you as a creep and just gets uncomfortable.
      Welcome to sweden! The people living on the countryside is often nicer than the citypeople.

    I miss riding the buss (Lokaltrafiken) in Umeå, especially in winter when residents brighten their windows with electric candelabra and hanging lamps that shine warm light on a cold blue night -- which means 15:00 to 10:00 the next morning!

    • @thanrose
      @thanrose 6 лет назад +1

      They can be utilized in some fashion year round, but they won't stave off starvation for humans. Sort of minty sharp resinous flavor that is reminiscent of medicine. Don't know what the young green leaves taste like, but I've had birch beer, birch soda, birch gum occasionally, and birch sap as a decent clean water supply in late winter. You can eat the cambium, and I'd bet you could eat the very early catkins, but I haven't tried them. I don't recall any health warnings with them.

    • @Gregerlindstrom
      @Gregerlindstrom 6 лет назад

      ediable yes, but no one eats them regularly, lives here up in northen Sweden and I haver never heard anyone eaten them regurarly

    • @thanrose

      Rodigo, Where are you, equatorial South America? While it's not guaranteed, spring running sap from trees in temperate zones is potable. Differing in taste, but usually very watery and clean of pollutants. Tropical plants and desert plants are not as dependable. For one, they don't have the obvious spring surge in growth as cooler season trees, and they often evolved more toxic or unpleasant chemistries.

    Why should be pines "a more natural choice" to plant in sweden? The birch is a wonderful adapted tree for cold climates, i think i heard it was even the dominant species in scandinavia before conifers took over.

    • @VideoDotGoogleDotCom
      @VideoDotGoogleDotCom 6 лет назад +1

      You'll see when you spend a winter at these latitudes. If it wasn't for pine trees, everything would look even more miserable. Birches are nice only when they have leaves.

    • @RobGodMC
      @RobGodMC 6 лет назад

      @@VideoDotGoogleDotCom as it is for every place which has decent winters. But i was concerned about the choice of words "natural", not wanting to discuss wether it's better to have something green in a 4 hours day winter or not.
      Btw i think the birch tops pines at the rest of the year by miles ;)

    • @VideoDotGoogleDotCom
      @VideoDotGoogleDotCom 6 лет назад

      I interpreted "natural" as something that would be the most sensible or common choice, not literally as in "how nature would have arranged it". Anyways, I like birches, too :)
