Famous opera soprano Jessye Norman attended a concert given by Shirley, and went backstage to congratulate her. She told Shirley she didn't know how she performed like that for a whole show time after time. Shirley said to Jessye that she did that also. Jessye said that she only performed a concert every so often, and the same with an opera, and in an opera there are long periods where she doesn't have to sing. But she said that Shirley performs a full two hour concert, sometimes twice a day, day after day, a lot of it with full power, and she didn't know how she had the vocal endurance.
