A Little Thinning Goes a Long Way

Nisqually Community Forest is a community-owned and operated forest in the foothills of the Cascade mountains, just west of Mount Rainier. NNRG has had the pleasure of working with the Community Forest to create their forest management plan and manage their recent thinning project.
The lands around the forest, which are privately owned, are typically clearcut at a young age. But the Nisqually Community Forest is a managed under a different philosophy-one that balances a broad range of objectives. These include improving watershed hydrology and wildlife habitat, restoring parts of the forest to old growth, providing recreational opportunities, and sustaining timber and timber-based livelihoods in local communities.
