ISOLA D’ELBA// ELBA ISLAND// Paradise Off The Tuscan Coast // Family Travel

In the next part of our trip we spent the month traveling through Italy.
Our third Italian destination and stop #7 was Island of Elba on our Summer 2023 travel extravaganza!
Elba is a Mediterranean island in Tuscany, Italy, 10 km from the coastal town of Piombino. Elba has an area of 86 square miles (223 square km) and is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago. It is famous as Napoleon's place of exile in 1814-15. Administratively Elba is part of Tuscany regione, Italy.
We had the pleasure of meeting up with old family friends (Medici’s) whose family has deep roots on the Island of Elba. We stayed in the charming area of Lacona in a small cabin near the beach. Our days were spent cooling off in the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea from the summer heat and finding hidden beaches with shade and cool drinks. Seaside dinners with friends, gorging on clams, mussels, calamari, pastas and piazzas while enjoying the beautiful sunsets and views. We were fortunate enough to spend a private day boating along the stunning coastline snorkelling, riding waves and learning to properly anchor.
A cooler cloudy day gave us the opportunity to explore the awe inspiring old ruins of the Fort Falcone in Portoferraio. The Falcon Fortress was built in 1548 by the Medici’s, not our Medici’s, as a defense from the continuous pirate attacks and kook tourists. This is a great vantage point to view the island and celebrity yachts as well.

Where did you rent the boat? My family and I are going to Italy in May 2025. That looks really fun, never thought to go to the island. We have two days we are removing from amalfi and this looks like a great replacement.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. We loved Elba. Super easy to get to by ferry from Piombino. We rented the boat right from the beach in the area Lacona where we stayed. Elba is amazing for the authentic Italian island experience. We loved the food!
