I believe it is possible to click a power plant and upgrade it with more power production, but it blocks you from putting defenses on it. That way you can place some in your base to provide extra power in case your defenses go down.
I think using power plants as defenses is an interesting and unexpected idea for this mod, but it didn't really suit my tastes.
