    This episode has a lot of great lines (e.g. ...my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle...), but it also has two of my favorite silent takes in the entire show: Mal's look when Saffron offers to wash his feet, and Inara's look when Mal says "I knew you let her kiss you."

    Well, it was an episode of Malcom trying really hard to do the right thing and not jump the bones of the beautiful and dangerous woman... and ultimately letting her kiss him, and failing. Yet his crew had his back, so they prevailed.

    I like how we saw Saffron's M.O. play out with the crew: Plan A - seduction: which takes out Mal. Plan B - (if Plan A doesn't work) roundhouse kick: which takes out Wash. Then we see her try Plan A on Inara which fails, then she immediately goes to Plan B, which Inara is also able to avoid. (demonstrating that they're evenly matched - Inara is only taken out by her affection for Mal) The fact that we see Saffron go through her progression is fun storytelling as we become familiar with her M.O.

    Everyone always debates about, Why would Vera need air?
    It does seem to me that all throughout the series, every time someone cocks a gun i hear a sound like something either charging or maybe compressing. This is 500 years in the future. Could there be a need for guns aboard ships to be different than they are now?

    "Our Mrs. Reynolds": The crew takes out a local gang of outlaws, and gets very drunk. Jayne gets a Rain Stick, but Mal gets a wife!? "Saffron" is eager to please, but Shepherd Book warns Mal about a Special Hell. Jayne suggests a trade. "Mal's wife" tries to woo Wash and Inara, then takes the other shuttle after sabotaging "Serenity." A scrapping web awaits the ship, but Jayne and Vera "make music" in Space. Mal catches up with "Saffron" but learns nothing important.

    It’s not a spoiler to say the show is set in roughly the 25th century. Apparently civilian gun technology has not progressed much past the 21st century. (I I suspect that is in part due to a political agenda of Joss Whedon.)

    • @myeckwaters
      @myeckwaters 10 месяцев назад +5

      I suspect it has mostly to do with old fashioned guns needing less expensive FX.

    • @bigdream_dreambig
      @bigdream_dreambig 10 месяцев назад +5

      It's not politics or budget. It's to maintain the balance of the two genres in "space western." If everyone was toting hand-held laser canons, that would skew the show decidedly toward science fiction, losing much of the western flavor.

    • @TheBloobster
      @TheBloobster 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@bigdream_dreambig this... you get a laser, then you get a Smith and Wesson. Gotta have em both. Wouldn't be Firefly without em.

    • @TommygunNG
      @TommygunNG 10 месяцев назад

      1. Totally get it regarding projectile versus directed energy weapons and FX cost. The 1980s “V” had the same issue.
      2. I agree on the “Western” motif, intent, but with two key caveats:
      A. In universe, the authorities and very rich people did have directed energy weapons (spoiler information omitted).
      B. MORE TO MY PRIME POINT: The plethora of manual action and explicitly “Western” arms, compared to self loading arms. That is, a lot of revolvers and lever actions, and relatively few 1911s and ARs or AKs. Part of that goes to building the “western” picture, but not necessarily all.
      It brings to mind the 2018 “Halloween” movie. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is said to have insisted for political reasons on using only manual action arms- that is, non-“assault weapons”).
      The truth is, the modern ammunition round is an extremely efficient storage and delivery system of kinetic power. That people 400 years from now will still be using them -cf Starship Troopers - is far from outlandish. And, of course, it contributes to the lovability of the Firefly franchise. (Lol I myself literally have more firepower in my gun locker than Jayne has in total.) That said, I retain my suspicions about Joss Whedon’s full intent.

    • @Dice-777
      @Dice-777 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@TommygunNG As you seem fairly into the topic, may i ask what indicates to you that the reasons for featuring almost solely manual action type arms are Whedons political views? Cause you agreed to 3 thematical reasons for why the abscence of automatic guns makes sense, I think those reasons explain the choice in guns sufficiently.
      Then you cited an incident with Jamie Lee Curtis and ended on the conclussion that you'd stay sceptic regarding Whedons motivs.
      I fail to see the relevance of the first statement or how its related to this show. As for the second one, i respect your choice of staying sceptic, but is this choice based on anything or is it just, well, your personal choice?
