Many of you are pointing to the fact that Doughboy died at the end of Boyz N The Hood (which we all know happened).
Perhaps you're simply reacting to the title of the video, but please consider giving us the minimal amount of credit that we are well aware that Doughboy died and therefore this video must be asking a deeper question.
Whether you want to explore that or not with us is up to you... Yes, Doughboy died, but that hasn't got a thing to do with the plausibility of this theory and the question we're asking. 😊
Loki just changed the time loop for Doughboy. Moms never slapped him. He saw the streets and the pen as a youngster, changed his ways. Ricky runs track while red shirting his freshman year. They go to an HBCU along with Trey. Momma love changes everything!
Real-time

When both movies came out I was young. I know John Singleton hand pick most of the Actors in all he's movies. Also like to use Actors that the black community wanted to see. An Director of a all Black cast at that tyme didn't have much to work with cuz of Hollywood what Most Movie directors was looking for in the 90's wasn't much color if you wasn't on Drugs or a Killer. John wanted to show the World as a Black Man or Woman in the inter-city and how they are treated around other Races! Not sure what ya'll getting at but I can see what this video is going for. Can go deeper as to seeing Mailk and deja Engagement in love and Basketball. P.S. I never look at the characters like that cuz they was all different thanks for pointing them out. Growning up I saw all of them types in my everyday life!
True Story
Fudge was about being 100% black and not being a sellout.
Fun fact, 2Pac (Likely as Fudge or was supposed to be in Higher Learning as Omar Epps character) Gwyneth Paltro and Leonardo DiCaprio were also casted to star. But the studio refused due to Pac's legal issues. So Paltro and Leo quit out of solidarity
Really
Michael Rappaport talked about it, but I don't remember him saying it was out of solidarity.
What do you mean Tupac was Gwyneth and Leonardo?
Yep nice facts 👍
Leo would've played Remy and paltro would've played the rape victim
Doughboy's mom sealed both her boy's fates in that first scene.
Man.... 😢
sad to say but yup.
😹
Till this day I still believe Furious was Doughboy’s dad. The flirting and chemistry with the mom, how even though Furious didn’t agree with what Doughboy was doing he never tried to keep him and Trey apart, and of course the last line; “you still got one brother left man.” Now I know brother is a term used for many things but I think it was a subtle insight as well…
@@AutoYoungdamn 😮 I never thought of that theory that would be crazy 💯
It's ironic how Deja spent so much time telling Malik that racism didn't affect her life but in reality racism was the reason her life ended.
Yeah she was a house girl
@@Jbeeze82a house girl because she didn't let the her color hold her down? Got it
It’s been awhile since I seen Higher Learning but didn’t Deja at some point tell Malik that her white roommates or sorority sisters constantly discriminated against her?
@rwall3450 everything something came up missing they look at her and she felt it was cause of her skin color but that wasn't going to stop her. Yes she died but Malik understood after her death that hating someone cause of their skin or a race cause of a bad apple. Will stop us as a people to grow.
@@chefstevenmurry158 black people should hate the white color skin!! History told the truth and it's still going on to but whites use deflection all the time and never tell the truth!
Man I wish John was still with us so he could answer that question and of course give us some more movies
If the mailman would’ve handed the mail to Ricky on his way out the front gate instead of Ricky’s mom, Ricky could’ve still been alive, because he probably would’ve looked through the mail to see if it was anything for him, seen the letter with his test scores, and delayed going to the store at that particular moment, which would’ve thrown off the timing that him & Trey ran into Ferris & his homies in the red car. But that’s all wishful thinking. Damn Rick!
True but Ferris could’ve went after him the next day or the day after that. Unfortunately for Ricky, his fate was sealed after that first encounter with Ferris that night before or whatever….thats just how empty and ignorant Ferris was.
Doughboy had more knowledge than Ricky. Ricky was just sliding by because of his popularity of being a high school football star. But Doughboy was reading and knew a lot about life experiences. Doughboy is a proving fact that without a proper education you can still have a lot of knowledge and smarts.
Oml I’m living proof of that shit hard up bringing favoritism in the household n still got more sense than everybody who said I wasn’t gonb shit
@@JamesSmith-yw3yr Doughboy's mom was a horrible mother. Favoring one son over the other which goes to show you, you don't know who you might have to depend on.
“The actual factual”
- Doughboy
@@marvinwhittakershe didn't had a problem of Ricky being a teen dad due to the fact that she thinks he gonna be a NFL star at least Ricky is a responsible dad but had the roles been reverse she be on Dough's ass about getting a job
@@thenewjord50 true!! I believe she thought that Ricky was going into the NFL and that was going to be her way of getting out of the hood.
The best thing about HIGHER LEARNING is what you said though: you got to see 3 actors (I’m not gonna mention the legendary LAURENCE FISHBURNE )from BOYZ IN THE HOOD in a different light. Showing more range, especially ICE CUBE.
TBH Higher Learning was way ahead of its time. Singleton told sooo many different stories of adult/child dichotomy. I was working with my stepmom when I was 18 and she always called me a man-child. I slightly understood but being a man-child waved it off. Now being a father with kids in college, I understand. They all make mistakes that lead to the end all mass shooting. Again…..WAY ahead of its time
You all did a great job on this analysis. I saw this in the movie theatres in the 90s right before I started college. After watching your analysis, it just occurred to me that Fudge may have been in school for 6 years, not as the person taking a long time to finish his Bachelors Degree, but he could have been finishing a Masters Degree. A standard Bachelors Degree takes about 4 years to complete and a Masters Degree is an additional 2 years. He could have graduated with an MBA, but didn't mention it. Fudge also could be a version of what the Professor was in his early education days. Now I have to watch this movie again for the first time in decades to see what I may have missed. Again, you did a wonderful job on your analysis of this classic film.
Fudge was definitely my favorite character !!He was smart , mentally tough and had a good sense of his surroundings. They don’t write characters like that anymore 💯. Love y’all content, constantly looking forward to your videos ❤
Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️
❤❤❤ yes
Cant forget douge boy was loyal to everyone he is around even the brother despite the mom showing favoritism as a kid .. And even thought they fought he still show loyalty and love for his brother by going being him when he seen the threat going his way and eventually killing his brothers killer
Fudge is my favorite character. He was very intelligent. Fudge knew that real wealth was knowledge. He knew what the system was all about and he knew how to navigate through it.
I hear Riley so much when hearing Regina talk in her regular voice😭 when she was saying “he could be a she” I’m like yea that was straight up Riley 😂it’s crazy when I was a kid I never even knew she voiced them
😆
Ice cube and Regina have always given brother sister vibes. In Boyz n da hood, I thought they had different mothers, same father. Same vibe in higher learning. When they did Friday and was brother and sister, it was cemented for me😂
I was a lecturer at a university for a few years, and the athletic directors informed professors of student athletes taking the course (for scheduling purposes) . LOVE this channel, btw!
Thanks ❤️
I saw Higher Learning in the theater when it first came out and it definitely left an impression on me! One thing I remember is the entire theater going dead silent when Deja got shot.
I love your take on the possible connection between these movies and completely see it! I’m leaning toward Fudge, because even though he’s resting in his “Seniority”, he’s in college, he’s bettering himself, he’s imparting knowledge and he’s encouraging people to become better by studying for themselves to gain a higher knowledge.
Basically Fudge is Doughboy if he grew up in a good neighborhood..
Fudge is from the hood what are you talking about???😂😂😂 He ain't from the suburbs
Fun fact: Dough boy is based on a rollin 60 crip named Big U. He got out of prison in real life around the same timeline as dough boy in the movie. So you'd have to imagine dough boys life would have played out like Big U's did in real life.
Yeah, but in fiction would we be restricted by what happened in a real person's life?
Not Fact. Deebo was inspired by Big U. Well known fact
@@poloregalno. Deebo was inspired by a dude from Watergate. Dj Pooh has stated this on multiple occasions.
Doughboy is literally nothing like Big U Big U was not that intelligent
Doughboy quote I use all the time..”First of all, you don’t know wtf I be knowin” 😂
😆
Both Doughboy and fudge are favorites. Same person in different environments.
Just want to say as a fellow film enthusiast, I love what you two do. It takes a lot to analyze film especially when trying to see things in a different perspective. This was a dope video and interesting take!
Wow, thank you!
19:10 Oh man. That credit cards in college part is real. I remember resisting the urge to apply for them and take the free gifts they were offering at first. Then I went ahead and signed up for a couple just to get the free stuff they were offering at the booths on campus. When they arrived in the mail I promised myself I wouldn't use them and even cut one up. But then temptation took over and before I knew it I had maxed them out. Lol And I thought I was the only one that went through that.
seeing that Higher learning financial problem scene this for the 1st time as an 8th grader scared me to death, but seeing this back in my 30's as a college grad had me thinking "eh, been there done that. "😏
John Singleton ( RIP) started off as a production assistant/intern on " Do The Right Thing"...he admired Spike Lee...one of the reasons why he probably cast Laurence Fishburne in his movies was because of " School Daze" ...so just like how Spike Lee put Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn( RIP) , Joie Lee, Ossie and Ruby Dee Davis( RIP). ..even Samuel L. Jackson...John Singleton ( RIP) put Regina King in " Boyz N da Hood" , " Poetic Justice " , and " Higher Learning"...Cube, Laurence Fishburne , & Morris Chestnut came back for " Higher Learning " but by the time, John did Babyboy ...everybody had pretty much moved on and became successful or too busy...Tyrese was in " Babyboy" , " 2 Fast 2 Furious " , and " 4 Brothers" because John Singleton believed that he had leading man appeal as a actor.. he felt the same way about 2 Pac...different universes !
John Singleton is on record stating something about Higher Learning showing another side of the Inner City of Boyz in the Hood when the young people make it out, 💯. Truly fascinating subject. I love talks like this. Enjoyed all the comparisons ironies and suppositions throughtout this update as well as the contributions in comment section.
It’s like they are the same person in a parallel universe
Fudge is doughboy if he was raised by furious styles all his life
lol Perfectly said 😂😂😂
Even after Ricky was shot the mom thought Doug Bog did it
This is a great theory/connection happy Friday you two

Not even 2 minutes into the video, and I already rock w this Theory..a shared or alternate universe! If Tarantino can have one,so can Singeton!
What I also notice is the purging situation shows how certain ppl have jobs being the faces and voices of things.. but they don’t have much power beyond that. The students looked to Phipps to help them with their problem with being purged. But that issue is really above him in a lot of ways
True! I think this is why he tried to empower them in what way he could. He understood that it was really a David and Goliath type battle against the entire system.
@@AxiomAmnesia ‼️ yessssss. He's a very Dual Character.. Thee Middle Man of Alot of Shihh
This was a dope review yall. I wanted to add that Dedrick Gobert, who played Dookie Boyz N The Hood was in this movie too. I feel like yall might have mentioned that, but if not, he was the guy always in the background with Fudge and he asked Deja if she had any sisters
James carter from Rush hour could've definitely been Smokey from friday as well he went to rehab then joined the Lapd started going by his government name and never came back to hang with Craig 😂😂

Great analysis! Fudge was probably my favorite character between doughboy the two.
I'm 46 years old, saw both these as a teenager AND SAID THIS BACK THEN. 😉😆😂
Doughboy & Ricky had an ain't shit mama. The part were they went looking for the body & getting into it with the older kids remind me of Stand By Me but in the hood.
I guess her fate was her role in poetic justice.
If Dough Boy had hung out with Fudge, he would have turned out differently.
58:23 after watching this video that seems like a trick question. Now I see more than ever that they are the same person, given a small twist of fate. Doughboy could’ve been told about Frederick Douglas in juvenile detention and given a book about him. Frederick was gangster as hell and Doughboy would have been down with him if given the chance to learn about him. That could’ve been part of his transition . It could also explain why he got stuck at school. Mom wasn’t giving him any constructive criticism.
Just a thought.
We love when it all comes together and people get where we were going with this! ❤️ The reality is that no video title could really express what we meant without giving everything away. We appreciate that you were willing to take this discussion trip with us! 😊
@@AxiomAmnesia no problem! It’s the psychologist in me. I love to interact with someone who promotes individual think, outside the box theory, etc. keep doing what you’re doing. This channel feeds a part of my brain that is hungry 🤤
Literally the 2 sides of Ice Cubes rap persona ..he’s come off as a gangster in early NWA , then he went east cost started hanging with Chuck D and came back on some more revolutionary type feel
This is an interesting theory that is well commentated by you guys.
i never thought about this before between the two movies. I'd figure, as with many filmmakers, they would use actors they got along with from previous films because they have established that working report
This idea of Higher Learning-which is underrated-being an Alternate-What if-Reality of Boyz brings a new perspective.
As someone commonly referred to as "Dr Ice Cube", these were most certainly 2 of my fav characters since early childhood. (Thaanks to older siblings) Its hard to choose between the 2. I think this is one of the best alternate movie-verse theories around. If doughboi had been fortunate enough to attend college. It may likely have required 6 years to mature and build enough consistency to finish. Think of the tragedies back in South Central that may have forced bro to pause his education. I lost too many friends and fam while in school. In Addition, ya'll are soo right on the "student loans vs safe room and board" situation so many of us have been in. These are almost akin to "John Singleton Caricatures", in different universes where each is a supporting character in different scenarios surrounding his main character (Trey and Malik). Baby Boi is similar, but different in that is more like the same universe as BNTH, but a different time and characters. Great take as always! Maybe Furius is Fudges Father in real life? lol
IKR!!! 😂
Doughboy turned into Craig Jones in the movie Friday think about At the end of boyz in the hood Doughboy had a toxic mom in Friday he had a mother who loved him unconditionally
I love the channel. Keep the videos coming an are you guys getting information from somewhere or Is it all in the films your watching? Don't stop an God bless.
We simply watch the films and say what comes to mind. Thanks so much for watching!
The real villain of boyz in da hood is Dough and Rick’s MOM. The whole thing is her fault
I feel like the Regina King character in both movies are there to challenge ice cubes character like only a female friend can

There's so much I like about Doughboy and Fudge. I think I like Doughboy more because I know more about his background. I understand how he turned out that way. You could see that he was good inside but lacked guidance and love. Doughboy's character was a warning to parents. Fathers, your sons need you, and Mothers, be good to your children.
Do shareef from menace to society and him from boyz in the hood football scene🗣⚡️

This is dope! 🤯
See, I didn't know about the character types being so parallel between "Boys N The Hood" and "Higher Learning", but now I gotta watch that one, too. 💖
This a great idea. Alternate realities of pre-existing movies. Better than anything in trash Hollywood
If Doughboy wouldve lived to be Fudge that wouldve been dope
I’ve never seen Higher Learning I’ma have to check that out fr
fun fact, Poetic Justice was a sequel to Boyz n da Hood. I always treated Fudge as Cube real life persona, O'Shea Jackson and Doughboy as his NWA/rap persona Ice Cube. I actually became a version of Fudge back when I was in college.
Fudge was my favorite
I still want to believe that fudge is the last minutes of life musings of a dying Doughboy, you know, since we're only told that he got got. We never see how long it took for him to actually pass.
It said he does two weeks later.
@@AxiomAmnesia oh yeah I know that part, I meant the literal act of dying. Was it immediate or was he alive for a few hours? That's the part we don't know.
The ID thing happened to my son. He was hanging with a group of white kids and someone called about a disturbance in the neighborhood. Out of the 6 white guys 2 white girls and my 1 black son the cops only asked for my son's ID

On the LoveCraft Country Podcast. They talked about How the hierarchy causes noise in communication between black ppl when it comes to what’s possible in life.. the sisters in the show.. Letti and Ruby wanted to apply to work at a Store.. Ruby is dark skinned and Was certain she wouldn’t be hired bcuz she’d tried before and was still trying.. Letti was sure she could get the job.. and Ruby was dedicated to Convincing Letti that she’d be wasting her time.. both are right in their beliefs due to their differing realities.. For Ruby. She wouldn’t have ever been hired, because she didn’t fit the ‘look’.. Letti wouldve likely gotten the job because She did fit the look and seemed to have already benefited through life in certain ways due to colorism and her having the potential to ‘WhitePass’ ..
Allat to say.. this movie does a great job of showing that concept.. the noise that the hierarchy creates in communication of possibilities amongst black people.. Especially when the students interact with Phipps .. Despite being a Minority.. He has a Position of Power.. Which-is also limited in power.. His dual position Makes the students feel they can relate to him.. But his superior way of thinking, quickly reminds them that they have different realities.
Phipps would be considered an Acceptional Exception.. Which is the term Tom Burrell uses to describe Black People who seem to have defied all odds of oppression, but are distracted by their own success so much, they don’t realize they are being used as Tools to facilitate the oppression , take all the hits, and given everything they need to become what they once despised.
Tom Burrell has a book called Brainwashed. I think every black person should read at least one chapter. Or even a couple pages out that book. Fr fr. It’ll blow your mind the way he breaks shihh down.
I'll have to take a look at that book. I'm always looking for something new to read.
@@AxiomAmnesia yes gawd ! I'm sure yall would really appreciate it.. My Mentor & Acting Coach in College introduced us to that Book & Author.. and it really makes a difference in analyzing and perceiving things, especially art forms that concern human behavior & habits..
