    The good thing is that we now have more EV makers coming out, and this makes EVs become more competitive. Eventually, we all the consumers benefit from the competition. This means better EVs with reasonable prices. It's said the right thing will come at the right time. This time is for VinFast. In fact, Vinfast SUVs are such a rare combination of Italian Pininfarina and German BMW. VinFast VFs are stylish, modern, premium electric SUVs with cool high tech features and at affordable prices.

    I might consider Vinfast, especially since their VF8 and VF9 look so good, if it weren't for the battery subscription model. On the one hand it's cool you don't need to worry about battery degradation because you aren't stuck with the same battery forever. On the other hand you have a vehicle that you're never done paying for. Now I know the same could be said about a ICE vehicle because you have to continually buy gasoline or diesel and oil for it but if you have a VF9 and purchase the unlimited miles battery subscription plan at $110 per month, you're adding $1,320 per year to your car payments. If you drove 12,000 miles per year, that would be $0.11 per mile. If gasoline costs an average of $4.25 per gallon and you're getting 30 miles to the gallon, (it's way more expensive than that in places like California and New York) and driving an average of say 12,000 per year, then the gasoline would cost you $0.14 per mile for a total of $1,720 per year (plus oil and whatever other routine maintenance you may need). So the battery subscription would be a little cheaper than buying gasoline for many people, but not much.

      @@JasonWW2000 Let's talk about EV battery! Experts suggest that EV batteries often last from 10-20 years or theoretically last forever. However, EV battery degradation to below 70% is bound to happen at some point depending on the driving habits, charging habits, speeds, the temperature, road conditions, and more. As a result, several federal regulations require manufacturers to warranty EV batteries for 8 years or 100,000 miles to ensure the batteries hold at least 70% capacity. In reality, a Finnish man's 2013 Tesla Model S after 8 years started showing error codes while the mileage display was less than 100,000 miles in December 2021, and the only fix was a $22,600 full battery replacement, which was half of the price the EV retails for, and his final choice was sadly to blow it up instead of footing the bill. VinFast battery leasing program is not that bad. Let's do some math! Here are the numbers. VinFast basic 310 mile-plan is in my opinion mostly for elderly people and those who don't drive much, and it costs VF8 drivers about $35 per month or $1.16 per day, and $44 per month for VF9 drivers or $1.46 per day, which is nothing! However, VinFast unlimited mile fixed lease option is quite interesting. It costs VF8 drivers, about $110 per month or $3.6 per day, and for VF9 drivers, it costs $160/month or $5.3 per day. Now, compare those numbers to the price of $6.0 per gallon at a gas station at the moment! Yes, I would seriously consider a VF9. I'd have to test-drive it, see how it feels, how it handles, how well it shifts from passengers to cargo, etc. Those details are more important to me than range, as long as I can get a minimum of 250 miles per charge. Oh, time to recharge from 15% or 20% up to 80% or 85% is important too...
    I would be comparing this to a Tesla Model Y, which may be very difficult to acquire over the next few years, just as Vinfast is being rolled out in the US market and will be much easier to acquire. At least I expect so, since it's an unknown brand, and Americans are slow to embrace unknown brands for things like automobiles, even as they actively hunt for unknown brands of coffee roasters and artisanal chocolate. I have to admit that Pininfarina did a great job on the design giving VinFast an elegant and distinctive look, especially at night when the headlights and taillights on. Actually, I found out that the battery leasing options are not that complicated. Basing on the battery leasing options for VF8, I would rather pay $110/month (or just over 3 bucks/day) for having no mileage limit and no energy charge at any charging stations every month, than pay $35/month (just about 1 buck/day) for a mileage limit and no charge within only 310 miles every month.

      @@samuelclarkton2748 I have to strongly disagree with you. Ride share is way, way cheaper. Buying a vehicle is expensive, plus you have full coverage insurance, plus any maintenance, etc... So there is no comparison in cost. Having your own vehicle is more convenient, though. If your elderly and living on a pension and only travel a little per month it's way cheaper to not buy a new vehicle.
      So we agree that a person in that position is best to have a cheap used car? No car payments, cheaper insurance, just maintenance items are needed. They have their own vehicle so it's very convenient.
      So what type of elderly person would the Vinfast be for? Someone who has retired with a million in the bank? That makes sense, but are there enough of them? IDK. I would not think so as it's a tiny demographic. I still don't understand there reasoning for the 310 miles. @@JasonWW2000 Me too. Concerns about battery pack degradation and its replacement cost are one of the reasons big auto manufacturers have been reluctant to make any BEVs at all, until recently.
      Tesla's approach was to make the battery pack as amazing as possible and assume the battery pack will die around the same time that the rest of the car does (even though that's a sketchy assumption).
      Vinfast's approach is to isolate the riskiest variable of BEV ownership and treat it differently from all the rest of the car (even though that raises exactly the issues the OP objected to here).
      I could go either way, honestly. "Owning the entire vehicle" including a potential poison pill (a bad pack) might be just as risky as "owning the vehicle but holding the battery pack at arm's length."

The Fixed plan is more like unlimited data, at $110 per month for the VF8 and $160 for the VF9 with no mileage caps. ...you are NOT the Vinfast target demographic, my friend!
      I'm thinking I'll keep my Toyota Sienna for long-distance drives and use the VF8 or VF9 (or other lower-cost, shorter-range BEV) as a daily driver. Parsing out my driving miles like that would make the lower-cost battery subscription easy for me.
      And if I'm getting close to the mileage limit for the month, I'll just use the old Sienna for a few days... or ride my bike more often, which I used to do quite a bit, pre-pandemic.

Upgrading EV is not really good idea, much better to sell it to someone who wants it, and get brand new car, charging gets better every year, can not change all components of a car.

    Battery leasing did not work well for Nissan in the US. Vinfast will not succeed either at it.

    • @Wordsmiths
      @Wordsmiths 2 года назад +1

      Nissan's experience is definitely a cautionary tale for Vinfast, but it doesn't guarantee failure. If you pitch the battery lease as a way to make the manufacturer shoulder the greatest risk of BEV ownership (having your pack crap out on you after 20,000 miles, and only hold half the charge it ought to, or less), that might make a difference.
      If Vinfast isn't aware of Nissan's previous experience, and isn't studying it and learning from it, then yeah, it's likely they will make the same mistakes and it will be ugly.
