From the Philippines:
There are algae bloom in Boracay, and it was closed down until October 2017 for clean-up and rehabilitation efforts.
Now here in California, these glowing dolphins mean that the coast of California is also suffering by an algae bloom, even worse than in Boracay.
This is beautiful and scary at the same time.

It's just phosphorus in the water. When it's present you can see it like this at night. We see it in NZ alot. 🐬
This is bioluminescence from a particular species of plankton, not phosphorus.

I believe that before they could tell the difference, this type of thing was indeed called phosphorescence so it could be a simple case of evolving language or common usage vs scientific.
Wither way, we all agree it's beautiful :)

There’s a reason why marine biologists exist, they discover new species every day. It just isn’t as breaking as it’s mostly smaller species due to depth and water pressures breaking cameras.

Sailing back to UK from the Caribe .We saw , on a dark moonless night . mid Nth Atlantic . At least ten beautiful missile straight streaks heading straight for the boat. Called all to come up on deck. And we watched this phenomenal light display as they streaked beside us and around, underneath and then led us with their fantastic phosphorescence trails. Twisting and weaving and interlocking . A sight and experience of a lifetime.
