Adding power from the county road any substantial distance say 1/2 mile drive way is dearly expensive. Tread lightly.

We might have too much rock for that, but is certainly something to look into! The lot has full southern exposure so is also a great candidate for solar.

You will never go hungry on your 20 acres homestead - great choice.
Less is more! So you don’t need that big of a place when you think of it.
Just Look at your great camper!
But building two in one has big advantages.... house on top & shop at ground level below.
    One roof
    One foundation
    One heating system... etc.
One thing I would highly recommend is a metal roof using 16” wide panels with all hidden screws = no leaks
& metal siding giving you very low maintenance, long life, & big on fire protection.
Building a rocket stove with lots of thermal mass to radiate your stove pipes thru.
    Congrats.

I am a 74 year old retired multi disciplinary engineer. I bought 72 acres in 1986, designed and built a super insulated home and barn and have lived in it since. A few suggestions, insulate around your buildings foundation to the frost level, store excess power as heat. I did this with 2 hot water loops, one right under the slab, the other a foot down, While I have a high efficiency condensing furnace, I also have a solar/wood fired hot water system. When heat is being produce it was first directed to a radiator in the furnace, when air temp hit the setpoint, hot water was directed to the loop just below the cement slab, when the slab hit its set point the heat was directed to the loop a foot below the slab. That served as a massive thermal mass, with the heat slowly rising. In your case you could use derated electric heating elements, inserted through 2-3" hones, placed in a grid under your home to store heat. Just bore holes through the slab. Or you can use a well insulated, buried water tang to store heat. And you could dump waste heat from the generator into the tank.

You could always buy a property with a big hill, put in a winch system for getting stuff to a building site at the top, then use the winch as a tow line - tow to the house, ski down to parking... 🤔😃
Looking forward to seeing your choice. Don't forget to make sure you can connect to hi-speed internet.
And don't let Riley poke sticks into holes in the woods. He seems to be a little accident prone. 😉😂

    • @AmbitionStrikes
      @AmbitionStrikes  3 года назад +1

Riley has talked about putting a ski slope in on every property we have looked at... 😂

Hi you guys did excellent dudes( air guitars fingered madly),now I watched you unload the trick using a backhoe- yeah I know I know !! Look at the pipeline videos a large lifting eye is welded to the back of the bucket as close to the pivot pin as possible, but doesn't interfere with digging too much, 6x6sq x9/16 thick a tow loop like on humpty welded after sq plate is fully welded 360ed --weld all4 edges bevel 45on lifting eye and burn it in . Make sure it cools down very slowly for best results...

If anything use humpty's spare tire as ballast that's around 450 lbs tied to the back of your hoe securely ! ! Find a local equip rental and rent whatever Saturday to Monday am only pay for one days rental some places have some workable stick machines for your rod burning skills . Stay safe keep your heads up !

By the time we understand our choices in a mate, it is to late. I envy these young couples who are working hand in hand to build a homestead, I had to do mine alone.

One suggestion, get a Hard Hat! You are both in jeopardy of a head injury hits all the tree cutting, roofing, and such. Came across your channel via the camper build. actually the other stuff is also very interesting as well.
Would you like to tell me why you choose Idaho?
I am living in Germany, whatever you think is "crowded" is probably landscape from my perspective 😉 2 "acres is too small". in cologne Germany you spend for 1 acres ~ 1.5 mio € (=2mio$) in the upper class area though. But of course that varies much off grid.
In which ballpark is the land you are looking for? If course you don't need to tell what YOU spend. But just to give me an idea.
Is it allowed to build a building on any land you own? Here is not! how, how big, high etc is given you by local government.

I subbed a little after you bought your new property so I'm just going back through the earlier videos. I loved the Kwanzaa house. It has "survivalist" written all over that but it also looks like you could just buy more pieces and extend it in all directions. I think building with those segments would be quite fun, and possibly quick.
But you ended up with a better location I think, especially now the road's done.

The last one is close enough in but feels out there. Neighbor. . In North Idaho you can be 5 miles out of town and feel like your in the boonies so why buy 15 miles out? The property is cheaper but seems to always stay that way.

They should build something like a small firetower to take advantage of the view..
They may also do the tiny house concept but built of mortar and logs. Then pack the whole thing with 2000 watts of solar panels and 2000 amps of lithium batteries.
    Dont forget the fireplace ;)

This one is a tough one for me. I have a 110 year old house on a town lot in N. Idaho that I bought for a job but haven't lived in full time for over 10 years. Not my forever home by a long shot.
I want to sell it and pick up some acreage but I don't have the slightest idea how I will ever be able to pull off buying land and building on a single income (no local jobs for me in the area) the way land prices have gone in N. Idaho and NW Montana. It has honestly turned into a huge anxiety/depression trigger for me. What is really stupid is that I have almost everything I need to start a nice homestead except a good piece of land and a house/shop.

Last year I bought 25 acres and the property buying experience is fun.
With the cost to build through the roof, I've squashed my plans to build right now.
Though I've considered maybe putting a couple Airbnb geodomes on the land.
I would seriously look into very specific details about an easement.
Personally, I would avoid them if at all possible.

It is so important to be able to access your property, otherwise it is worthless!
Airbnb income is such a great option for land otherwise not being used!

hey r & c / just a suggestion - do a time-lapse of the build of the truck camper, i think those sorts of videos get lots of views, yours' would be very popular (around 25 -30 mins). it'd be hell'ish to compose & edit, ah, but it would be worth it ...
btw i can't find, i wanna know the rear bumper fabrication episode, could you tell me please ?
