guess what chassis they used while filming in the Namibia desert when they were shooting Mad Max: Fury Road - the movie that's happening inside this unstoppable fortress on wheels thats constantly being chased
Undoubtedly it's a Dakar truck. Those things have 1000hp, monster torque and they're driven by highly skilled drivers. It's the first time I've seen one driven in anger on asphalt. It's very, very impressive yeah?
I once (many years ago) had one of the Dakar Tatras pass me on a highway near Olomouc. It was going about 140kph (85mph) in the left lane, its tires were taller than the Skoda I was in and the noise was deafening.
Similiar thing happened to my father quite recently when he was going to/from work with my mother, he was overtaking someone on a highway around Prague and suddenly saw a truck coming fast in the mirrors, he said something like ''what a moron would drive a truck so fast?'', finished his move and moved to the right lane and the truck just zoomed past him, when he saw the truck with sponsor decals and stuff, he realised what happened :D
I remember those Tatra trucks and others, from when the Rally Dakar was here in Argentina, all the cars, trucks and bikes they had to go through the highway in some parts of the road, and we all gathered on the side of the highway or bridges to watch it. And the sounds were unforgettable 💚 much love from Argentina
Not as much as you think, since it is here since beginnings of Tatra as a company. All wheels move separately up and down, but they are connected with air pressure, so they "feel" each other. If one goes up, other push harder against road. That makes the truck fly over bumps, allowing smooth workday and fuel saving for regular trucks. It may seem like nothing much, but when offroading, the deffirence is staggering, you can travel twice as fast as other trucks on muddy, bumpy paths.
Hello ja so ein Tatra ist ein sehr schöner Truck das nicht nur als Racing Truck auch im Zivilen Bereich steht er gut da dank seinem Antriebsstrang und seiner Einzel Radaufhängung.

Hans Ledwinka heritage bro 😀.... independent suspension and the central tube in the middle keep the center of gravity significantly lower than a truck with solid axles can have - that's it!
"That thing" is a Tatra, they know how to build cars... they were disapproved from building passenger cars, but they continued to build their trucks based on the same mechanical principle... I only owned three T 603's (first to last generation), but I know a bit about cars, those were solid and very very well built!
Not far away from my home. It is in village/city Namest nad Oslavou. Truck is one of specials for Rallye Dakar, so off road rally. One famous driver was telling story that when the eere going to start, to Paris, in Germany he was"playing games" with guys on German Highways. Maximum speed is limited by rules to 185kmph-approx 115mph, but car can do over 220/137... Enjoy guys.
This ride is from the Tatras, which is designed for the most difficult race in the whole world, in the terrain of South America. On the road, it was just an exhibition for spectators, but in the terrain it drives much faster and for hours.
I absolved me ride as codriver in Dakar Tatra in the terain . It's just big kart. Like big angry dog. You can hear it and feel in your butt when the first gear is set already before it's starts moving. It's beast.
Went for a ride along in a MAN Dakar truck years ago in the Netherlands. Dude where a normal guy brakes, they brake 50 meters later (on sand). Where there are bump or hills i would brake, they stepped on the gas pedal even more. Afterwards one of the mechanics said, the drivers broke more in one day, then in 3 weeks of Dakar.😂
its the setting of the chassis. its all about positive and negative camber between front axle and rear axle. if you look at the Truck, the rear tyres was set to negative camber (like a roof ) and the front tyres like a V when its accelerating, but if it bracks the front tyres changes from positive to negative camber. that helps the truck to have a good mix of stability and fast cornering. even Springs and shocks and stabilizers have a important point in the setup.
That positive and negative camber is due to suspension and chassis Tatra uses. Not because its set up like that. Thats just independent suspension. The truck is also built for Rallye Dakar, its not supposed to compete in hill climbs on a paved roads, this was just demo.
When Tatra entered Dakar.. They where so quick. That all trucks had to be limited to 100 mph.. The truck you are watching is capable of 100 mph. On a street course... American truck companies where asked to enter Dakar. They went um nup..
Ian , these Awesome Behemoths CORNER so well because 90-95 % of the weight is basically between the Centre of the Upper Tyre sidewalls . And the Wheel track is 50% at least , wider than most Cars . 11 Tonne Truck that's Faster , by far , than most Cars .
Yeah those truck are amazing on camera, but if you are standing 10m of this monster when it go full throtle that is something you never forget. Few years ago was on car show and there was a show race of cars in the park. EVERYBODY went slow and steady and in the end one of Dakar tatras went off..... First was sound of total beast then smoke on the horizon and after that THAT thing went to the air like 1m hi and 5m jump around like 10m near to me.... I was shocked and scared and went cheering like on playoff hocky game... I am really quiet person, but that was something.
Biiig appreciation that there are huge admirers of our Czechoslovakian TATRA even in the US! Tatra is highly underrated in the world, but I can tell you these beasts from the assembly line cost more than MAN, VOLVO, MERCEDES, etc trucks...so it has something to it and I tell you what it is. It is the unique patent created by Tatra, which is half-axle suspension. Each Wheel has his own half axle and they are moving independently from each other, thus all separate wheels can accomodate to the changing of surfaces, e.g. uneven surfaces. GO TATRAAAA!

i was once driving car on motorway-highway...doing my usual 70 mph...and there was just something big past me...yeah man,it was Dakar Tatra truck going well over 100 mph...
I have never seen one of these Tatras in the flesh, but they are awesome rally trucks, built for the Dakar rally. The powerslides in this video are freaking. I have however seen the DAF trucks of late Jan de Rooy, he was the first to build a truck like this for Dakar back in 1984. this one was double ended like a locomotive and had also 2 engines. The later generations had one cab but retained the twin engine layout, the 1988 X1 had 1220hp and a top speed of 135mph, it was indeed faster than the first car in some of the stages. In 1988 after a deadly accident killing Kees van Loevezijn, the navigator in the second truck, DAF withdrew from the rallysport. Jan however competed again from 2002 to 2009 with Ginaf, which is a small specialty vehicles manufacturer of the Netherlands using of the shelf DAF cabs and several brands of engines, but building their own chassis. Sadly Jan died on January 30, 2024, but will be remembered as one of the most successful motorsports drivers of the Netherlands, winning many Dakar rallies in the truck category.

Drivers Is Martin Kolomý 😉
@@tomaswhite2188 No this was David... Martin was in showcases and Dakar races but not in this hillclimb
