It was immediately after India won its freedom from Britaiin that Dussera at Patna started having musical concerts from Mahastami till the end of Maha Dashami night and the one I attended for the first time was held at Bari Road- Khazanchi Road Jn. organized by Late Heeralal Yadav and his younger brother Late Motilal Yadav and the principal musical artists were Ustad Faiyaz Khan Saheb and Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakua (tabla) and the year was 1949. Dussera at Govind Mitra Road, close by, also held musical concert that year with Pt. Onkarnath Thakur and Pt. Kanthe Maharaj as main artists. Organizers there were two brothers, Jagdish bhaiya and Vishwanth bhaiya By the way, all the named four organizers were students of P. N. Anglo-Sanskrit School where my father, Late I. B. Roy was the Headmaster The impact of listening to their performances for hours at a tender age of ten or so was so deep that I became a KAANSEN eversince (lol).
You were so lucky to hear these Ustadjis live! At the same age as yours I heard Ustad Ali Akbarji and young Zakir Hussain playing at midnight - Raag Darbari. It waa the first time Zakirji was playing in Kolkata. It was a music conferwnce organised by Ganguli School of Music at Mahajati Sadan. There I also had the chance of hearing Pt.Hiru Ganopadhyay (tabla) and his younger brother Pt. Shyam Gangopadyay (Sarod). In the same conference I heard the great Sunanda Pattnayakji's Tarana. This concerts I will never forget in life!
I hope that Sri Goutam Babu is alive at 82yrs. Thanks for sharing your childhood experiences.Ustad Fayaj Khan Sahab is inimitable and unique I love to listen him.
I'm a humble lover of Indian classical music. I don't know much about classical music but I rate Khan SAHEB one of the supreme in this endless ocean . He believed in reforms and was helping Bhstksnde in his herculean quest to take Indian classical music out of obscurity and degradation under colonial rule to its due status reverence and recognition. He was an intellectual and an avant garde who believed that classical music can also be democratised to be reached out to the wider masses beyond the palaces of Nawabs and Princes .
It was 30 years ago when I bought one cassette from pragati maidan exhibition delhi. It was an english songs compilation, but later I did not like it and went back to change. To shopkeeper surprise I chose Khan saheb cassette which had all these collection. And since then he has been my favorite classical singer. These vocals take you to another world.
I am London based Pakistani I know little bit about the music but when I first time heard his tarpat hun (lalit), composition and since then I don't remember how many times I had the pleasure to enjoy and here again and again this special composition
Ustad Faiyaz khan has an extraordinarily sweet yet very powerful voice and sems to be complete master of the swars ,often creating magic of moving from one mood to another effortlessly .Such continuity of beauty in music he achieves ,that one s left totally enamored and mesmerised ..Ny favourite singer
It's a source of regret for me that today's recording equipments were not available back then. Most of his recordings are from when he was nearing the end of his life, after being riddled with diabetes, typhoid and tuberculosis which affected both his lungs. Those few who were lucky to listen to his performances describe a voice unlike anything. It is said that his voice in his prime sounded like a pair of tanpuras were playing inside his body. Even most of those people have passed away now. Pretty soon all we will have left will be these recordings and our imagination of what a truly majestic voice should sound like.
For the first time I am listening Khan Sahib's renditions. They are mesmerising ! All the pieces are extra-ordinary. Jhan Jhan Jhan (Nat Behag), Nayna Se (Sughrai) and Kheyal (Darbari) are amazing.
This was Ustad Faiyaz Khans most famous one. Thanks for uploading and allowing new generation to listen. Tarapata Hun Jaise Jala bina meenaKa saiyan hame tumaro no hama tarapata tuma manata nahiKahe ko ye Dhamga leeno
This type of singing is very rare. It is a joy to.listen to. Makes one remember the Great K.L. Saigal. These were the type of singing During Colonial Era.Gone are those days. ONLY Manna Dey can be amongst the few who can charmed us with such Gems.
Krishna will go to the doorstep of whoever sings "vande nadakumaram" like this great vocalist is doing at the end of this record... jai krishna...jai nandakumara...
The distinctive feature of his singing was 'phut' and 'pukar' tans. At times, though, he comes very close to Ustad Karim Khan, when it comes to'garaj' tan. A legend, at any rate, in his own right.
I am knowingly listening to Faiyaz Khan for the first time, I am assuming I have heard him before because he sounds familiar. What is remarkable is that his singing is the image of "the gold standard of hindustani classical music" in my mind! What an amazing performer.
Ustad Faiyaz Khan was born posthumously (his father died before he was born) and his mother was also got married again soon after. He was brought up by his 'Nanaji' under whose strict supervision he got the training in music & eventually he became a legend in true sense. the fact itself tells that nothing can stop a man from achieving his target if he has determination, talent and discipline. He was also a man with a golden heart.(pl read the Book "Kudrati Rangibirangi" by Ustad Kumar Prasad Mukherjee to know about Khan sahib more).
A few short minutes yet one of the best recorded Todis I ever heard! Most longer recordings of Faiyaz Khansahab are from when he was older. This compilation of his old discs in this upload is great. It is funny that in some instances the recording equipment seems to be unable to capture the full tonal quality of Khansahabs much emulated voice.
When Gramophone Company started recording in India (more precisely in Calcutta) in the first decade of last century with artists like Gauhar Jan, Mouj-ud-deen, Lal Chand Boral (father of RC Boral), Zohra Bai Agrewali, Malka Jan Agrewali, etc., Ustad Faiyaz Khan was a regular visitor to this metropolis as he had "tallukat" with Malka Jan Agrewali. But his "high gharana" upbringing refrained him from carrying his tanpura with him. He neither sang at a mehfil nor recorded any song. Later when he took the Calcutta audience by storm in the thirties, he refused to sing for HMV (which had the best recording equipment) as he had given "jaban" to the Bangali Babu, CC Saha of Hindustan Records whose equipment was quite poor.
The fifth piece in this album is Raga Poorvi and the words are: Mathura na jaiyo mora kanha, manaa karo gopiya. Gokul teri brindaraban tera, brij mein machi dhoom dhaam.
I love Faiaz khan gayaki.I request to everybody to get me available the lyrics of Thumari of Faiaz Sahab. His gayaki should be extended to more & more people.
After a long time I heard those records and was simply spellbound. Imagine what influence he had over the audience. He could put them into his hands. What Darbari! I think accompanying artist is Sarafat Hussain. What a finish with Bande Nande kumaram.Yes he was entombed in Baroda. Please do not bring Hindu Muslim here. We have never learned how to respect our past greats. It is neglect. It is Hindus who made him emperor of music. The raga in question is Sughrai.
No, the accompanying artist on Darbari is not Ustad Sharafat Hussain Khan sahb but his sagey-mama Ustad Ata Hussain Khan sahb . Dadaguruji was 8-9 years of age when this was recorded.
Ustad Faiyaz Khan of Agra Gharana was considered as the great vocalist of twentieth century. He had no clinks in his armour as Pt. S.N.Ratanjankar said who was a disciple of Ustad Faiyaz Khan and a great personality in Indian Classical Music. Initially Pt. Ratanjankar was trained by Pt.Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. After that Pt. Bhatkhande himself asked him to train under Faiyaz Khan.
What the communal forces has achieved to break the tomb of this saint of Indian classic! He is not only the greatest maestro of the undivided India but a lejend whose creation send the message of love peace and diversity of unity.
En gano ke chart me rago ke nam bahut hi dhundhale Akcharo me likhe hunye kripaya karke unhe thode saf Akcharo me lekhane ka prayas karenge aapse binati hai .
If you are under 25 and listening to this you have a great musical taste.

Ustad Faiyaz Khan is just incomparable in respect of voice & gayaki.
