Your memory is always more amplified. You remember that lens as better than it really was, or worse. Especially if youre just looking at the bangers. Sometimes a lens leaves your possession for reasons other than you selling it to try something else, those I can understand regretting.

About 7 years ago I sold a Zeiss 35mm f2 ZF to help pay for a Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 VR.
The Zeiss was manual focus, and while I adored it on my old FE2 shooting film, I found manual focus on DSLRs unpleasant and I wanted a practical 2.8 normal zoom. Now with mirrorless and focus peaking I bet it would work great. Lens had so much character. I recently borrowed a friend’s Nikon Zf, the manual focus assist eye detection makes manual focusing satisfying, fast and reliable. I would love to try that camera and Lens combo but can't afford the investment right now.

I’ve kept my d810 even though I have a Z9 as my main camera. Best thing that I’ve done as I absolutely love using that camera for travel with just two Nikkor manual vintage lenses, a 35mm 2.8 Ai and 105mm f2.5. It just makes sense. For travel and street photography you generally want closed down apertures so focusing isn’t that much of an issue. These lenses are so small and light you could literally put them in your pocket and they’re exceptionally good. The photography experience is amazing. It brought back that fulfillment that I was loosing with all this tech. I cannot understand the Zf concept to be honest. They give you this nice camera but is so heavy and bulkier than the old stuff, there are no lenses for it except the 40 and 28mm which are great but don’t have that feel good factor like the old 70’s lenses that I mentioned before. If you adapt them with an f2Z they become bulkier still. I’ve said it time and again, Nikon should have made a last f mount camera with mirrorless capability and focusing aids. People say that it cannot be done because of the flange to sensor distance but to them I say then how did we have live view in our dslr days? Wasn’t that a pre mirrorlesss tech?

@@RussandLoz Yes and it wasn’t the only one. My D810 and D850 also as they have live-view. What I’m saying is that Nikon should get out a dslr with liveview and a no blackout evf with the latest tech and an f mount. It wouldn’t need to be full of video capabilities but have an af drive motor for the old Ai lenses. That would be really something.

I regret not selling things. When you find some kit at the back you forgot you had and realise you could have just sold it years ago. The one exception being the collection of basically free point and shoot compacts I'd collected from over the decades when spotting them in boxes of junk etc, recently sold a few for ridiculous prices due to the current trends, enough to fund some proper gear. But most of the time you don't get that lucky.

If you look at the Fred Miranda forum, you'll find plenty of people who have sold the 58mm f1.4G lens once and even twice before buying it again. There's no lens out there that does what it can do. The 50mm f1.2S has similar bokeh, but it still has a different overall type of image (plus it's a huge and expensive lens). I'm definitely more of a collector than I should be (with a very wonderful wife), yet there isn't a lens or camera that I've sold that I've regretted selling funny enough. If you can sell a lens for what you paid for it, no regrets.....someone is keeping it on the shelf for you for another day. But if you will take a big loss on the lens or it's a difficult lens to get used, I think it's best to keep it if photography is a hobby and you can afford to keep it. I find myself rotating the lens of the month and that's part of the fun.

And this year, I reduced my full frame gear by 70% by switching to Nikon - something that I should have done a couple of years ago.

My gear goes one way; in but never out. I recognise that it is FOMO or GAS or whatever you want to call it. But the fact remains that gear inspires me to go out and shoot. For example, when I think about my Z fc, I am feeling some nostalgia and I am looking for something small to take out, when it's the Z50, I am thinking of something small and comfortable to hold for a long time, when it's the Z7II I'm thinking about the best image quality and ability to crop in,, when it's the Z f I am thinking nostalgia, better grip, and more advanced features... And so on...The fact that I wrote all the above in one go without thinking just proves to me how much I rely on gear to guide my photography shoots rather than the other way around. And if I am super honest with myself, the only gear I need for 90%+ of what I shoot is my good old trusty D800 with its battery grip attached, the 17-35mm F/2.8, the 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6, the 70-200mm F/2.8, and in extreme rare cases, the Sigma 150-600mm F/5-6.3. The 50mm f1.2S is the only lens I'd grab if I'm on a paid shoot needing to ensure focus is nailed everytime.....and if I'm driving to the location. It's reliably sharp and beautiful. The 50mm f1.8S is the only lens I'd take for street photography (small) or if I'm travelling and need to ensure I've nailed focus. The 58mm f1.4G is the lens I take for family photography (travelling or not), creative shots or if I'm taking some close nature shots (which it's excellent for). It just produces the most artistically beautiful shots in my opionion. If I had to just pick one, well.....I'll get back to you in a year or two or three....

@@theflyest203 The 50mm 1.2S would be the more reliable lens with eye-AF when you want to move your subject anywhere around the frame. It will certainly produce beautiful wedding shots. The 58mm f1.4G provides the special look and I think the extra 8mm is a big part of that special look (and the fall-off), but I wouldn't want to miss that magic moment with soft eyes that are out of focus with the 58mm if you didn't compose it perfectly for the 58mm needs. BUT, there's a trade-off because the 1.2S is a big heavy lens. Lots of wedding photographers looking at the 35-150mm Tamron lens for the Z mount.....you'd lose the 1.2 or 1.4 aperture but the flexibility would be huge (but note the weight).

The 58 mm 1.4 G is the only lens that I have sold and bought again. I asked the camera shop what happened to the one I sold and somebody bought it and returned it and then it bought again. This is a special lens. It’s slow. It seems to focus way better on the newer Z cameras. It was hand designed by one of the lens designers at Nikon who put a lot of attention into the characteristics of the bokeh. This lens is best suited for portraits and the Bokeh really shines when used with water in the background. You might get a lot of bad shots, but the amount of shots that you get that are pure magic are worth it!

I sold all Canon film equipment including the FTb and switched to Nikon. I missed the FTb because It was a complete mechanical great to use camera body.
The FM2 I sold some years after I went digital. But my regrets are only of sentimental reasons. I dont think that I would have ever used it again.
And the RX10M4 I sold because of the poor low light performance. But on the other hand I missed the long zoom range. It was a great all in one camera for traveling at good light conditions.
Currently I am very happy with my Z8, Z6 and D750 and the tiny Sony RX100
