Absolutely right, I love the way she teaches and explains. Also, she speaks English pretty well. The pronunciation is spot on.

You're English is amazing I'm currently learning Chinese, but I have a friend from China, so if you ever make a video on how to learn English (or "gotchas" for Mandaein->English) then I'd share it to them. Regardless, thank you for the content! 🙏

I’ve been learning for 2 months now, I’m still working in my foundation. I’ve mastered the pinyin, and I’ve been reading books for a month. So I’m pretty confident in my pronunciation. I live with a Chinese couple that helps me a lot. I’m now starting to dwindle into the grammar and learning the basic words that form basic sentences, conjugations, ect. I was wondering how I should incorporate learning characters into this, or should I wait? Some characters I can already recognize (Ex. 个 and 人 )because I’ve been reading poems of tang dynasty and children’s books that include both pinyin and characters with the Chinese couple that helps me learn Chinese. But when should I start learning how to write and recognize more characters? Now? Or after I’m conversational level? I hope I typed this in a way that can make you understand my questions…😅

Hi there. Thank you for your comment. It is awesome to read poems from the Tang dynasty. Speaking of when to start writing and recognizing more characters, the earlier, the better. Because getting used to how characters look and are structured takes time, so the earlier you start the better you feel about your learning later. However, from my perspective, you don't need to push yourself too hard on learning characters if you just started, because getting tones right when speaking is more important and practical at the very beginning phase. Since you already started working on characters, my suggestion is keep it going and you will thank yourself in the future for what you have done. To practice, my suggestion is to diversify the ways you practice. When you have time, you can write characters stroke by stroke using those practice sheets with models to trace. Keep in mind - write in the correct stroke order which will be helpful in the long run. You can also practice typing characters because you will not only practice recognizing characters but also practice pinyin spelling when typing. You can also try using different fonts when typing which will train your eyes to look at characters in different fonts (because some characters may seem different or hard to recognize for learners). Best of luck in learning characters! Please let me know if you have any more questions or want to see any topics here on this channel. I am more than happy to help.

You left out "study etymology". The oracle bone characters (jiaguwen) are much easier to read but also much tougher to write because they are actual pictures. When we study oracle bone characters are then learn how they were simplified and stylized. It's very useful and not merely of cultural or historical relevance!

Totally agree that oracles are a great way to learn characters, especially to introduce the concept of pictographic symbols of Chinese characters to new learners; however, I find oracles more for cultural highlights but not as a major technique for memorization for most characters, since most characters nowadays have developed over thousands of years that it may be difficult to find pictographic similarities with oracles. Since this video is mainly to review memorization methods (not learning symbolic characters) for characters in general, I did not address the value of oracles. I did mention them (three videos ago) when I introduced characters.
      Thank you for your feedback:)

@@keystochinese0921 one thing that would have helped me is to have known the dot (zhu) on ideographic characters is like an arrow pointing right at the most relevant part of the character. Europeans use arrows symbolically everywhere, but Chinese really doesn't. I often wondered if there were arrows in Chinese like there would be in English were it a pictorial writing system. Nope! Also it was useful to me when i understood the 2 sided triangle was a shorthand of a circle 子 like there where it's the kid's head. Also I was unsure at first if characters were viewed from the top, side, back (depends!), or if they could be superimposed on each other (yes). I love Chinese. You're so lucky!
For use Westerners it's all new... so things which seem obvious to you might not be to us.
      Your'e great!!
