The straight border part wasn't about mainland Iberia, it was about the Treaty of Tordesillas, when Spain and Portugal basically divided the world with a straight line.

But that's Not totally correct.
Spain was made of individual Kingdoms, like the netterlands, Italy, austria and portugal. This places had different laws and different administrations. The only thing that United them was the King. The taxes went to Madrid. Just that. This means that King Felipe II was King of Spain, King of portugal, King of Italy and so on. They were different Kingdoms that had the same King.
Portugal was special inside this union, because it had even more independence. The administration of the portuguese Empire was made in Lisbon, by portuguese people.
Filipe II of Spain, Filipe I of portugal, was a great King, even to portuguese. The problem were his sucessors that Started disrespecting portuguese independence. They raised taxes and made Portugal lose very important cities in Ásia to the netterlands (after that the netterlands conquered Indonésia) to the French and british.
The people and the nobility were mad, so they called the duque of Braganza, grandson of Catarina de Braganza, and they went trougth "terreiro do paço" and killed the King's representator. Declaring a new King. Them there were some wars, but Spain was more interested in containing catallonia than in keeping Portugal.
