I was stationed in Babenhausen from 2001-2004. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! I'm pretty sure Cheers is LONG gone (Soldier Bar). It is SUPER sad to see it decaying.

03 JAN 1985 to AUG 1986; HHB 41st FA. Watched the contractors Dissamble the Prussian Army Buildings, install all new everything (except a freight elevator), and reset the 100 year old roof tiles on new wood roof beams. They picked up every granite paving stone to bury new water, steam heat, sewer, communications, power lines, then they hauled in sand and reset the same paving stones along with the cut curb stones. Then they tore down the fence between the landing strip and the old back side of the kaserne and built the barracks, parking, streets and maintance buildngs for the MLRS being fielded (3/92?). Babenhausen was celebrating their 750th year of having "incorporation authority". Over the 18 months I did 18 ARTEPS at Graf, 4 FTXs, 2 Reforgers, and one winter two weeks at Wildflicken. After cleaning the vehicles the next morning after our return our section (the single guys) had dinner with a reserved table at the Adler or the Italian. My CSM and 1SG showed us the respect earned by our professional. We were always being tasked with something with no NCO supervision, they had their own tasks to do. Then I got sent back to Ft Sill and found out what the stateside peace time army was like. I miss the food, the beer, the wine, and the bread. I did see the 3/92 FA during Desert Storm I think, rained a lot.
