Didn't have a 7x5 prop on hand to try but performance is much improved on 3S compared to 2S. CG is fine as the 550mah battery is not that much heavier than stock and some have found the need to add a few grams of weight to the nose for balance.
I did this 3s conversion. Using an APC 7X4E and a 3 cell GNB high voltage 380mAH battery, and this from amazon "4Pcs Mini 360 Buck Converter Mini 360 3A DC-DC Voltage Step Down Regulator Power Converter Adjustable Power Step-Down Module 4.75V-23V to 1V-17V RC Airplane Power Buck Module". I got 4 of them for $8.00 and tax. They are adjustable output with a tiny potentiometer. Wow. With this set up, point this A280 straight up and it is nearly out of sight in seconds (it is a small plane after all). It doesn't even seem to fade on the way up. You can still putt around at less than half throttle for five or six minutes if you choose, or about 3 minutes of insanity! CG and weight are not affected significantly with this mod. In my case I opted not to use the stock esc, using an old 12 amp Afro esc from a quadcopter instead. Did I say this thing has huge power? It has HUGE power, and this using the stock motor.
Hi mate would you be able to make a detailed video on how to do this conversion?? From the electrical components needed to the wiring. Please this would be so sick to replicate!
I can but I have also found that running on 3S hasn't caused any ill effects so far - just soldered a xt30 connector to the esc. Also that's using a 2 blade 6x4e prop. I have a A280 fc board running 3S direct on the A300 Staggerwing - obviously some risk but good reward.
I put a 3s on mine last night and haven't got to fly it yet, but so far it's running the same besides the tremendous gap of thrust from 2s to 3s. I plan on flying today and I'm using a 7x5apc and I also have some 6x4e I purchased from Buddy RC that I'm gonna try and using Tattu 450mah 3s. Have you ran the new Bipe on 3s yet?
@@ant-man1131 how did you go with 3s battery on this a280 p51? also is this just straight plug in or did you do a conversion aswell? if not what 3s battery did you use?
Yes - using the stock ESC I'd use a 6x4e 2 blade prop - the FC board needs 7.4v and can take the 3S power as is - or add a 7.4v drop down converter for safety.
@@motorutubebut yea I’m assuming changing the prop from a four blade helps …three blade is alright but four blade is overkill on amp draw :.. two blade will always be the best
Are you located in the U.S.? Would you be interested in being compensated for setting a board up if I provide everything you need? I'm lost on what to do but DAMN I want my P51 to fly like yours LoL
@@ant-man1131 Not in the US - have you checked the forum link? Setup is very basic - just need the voltage converter. The convertor is placed between the ESC and FC board using the existing+ and - wires.
@@motorutubeThanks so much for the great advice because now my 280 is everything it should be and probably a little more. Have you tried the 3s with the stock props? I love my little p51 but that 6x4e prop makes her ugly LoL! I put the stock prop back on and seems to do a really good bench pull, but haven't tried it out in the air.
@@ant-man1131 You can run the stock prop but the amp draw is higher and less efficient - manage the throttle and you will likely be fine. Stock prop for the hanger and 6x4E for the field - can't see it when it's flying - anyway enjoy and use care if using the stock prop.

@jacobg8vens1892... I believe I peed a little and definitely let a couple good ones goes because I was overly excited about how my 280 performed on 3s. Next time keep info to yourself because we all pass gas and if YOU don't then what planet are you from?!?!?!?!?
This is awesome I have one on the way thanks for sharing. Hope you get some sunny sky's keep flying hope to see more.
Let us know how you go once you have received it.
What a great plane and good flying there , Cant wait to get mine
Its Ok on 2S and better with 7x5 prop but really comes alive on 3S with a 6x4E - and a real transmitter. Enjoy
I've been advised something like this would work for Spektrum: lemon-rx.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=263
Do you get better performance than just changing the prop for 7x5 2 blade in some of the other videos on you tube? How has it affected the cg?

Yes it goes real well on 3S -- enjoy!

@@ant-man1131 Yes several flights on 3S - I'd use the 6x4E props on 3S as the 7x5 could pull too many amps based on the ESC being 10A rated.

So u can’t just use the esc that’s on it or change to a let’s say a 18a esc

Yes just a warning as I tested current draw - more than adequate performance on the 6x4 - try it and you'll probably not need full throttle too often!
How long of flight time do you get with the conversion?
Flight time of around 5 minutes on a 3S 550 mAh pack leaves the pack at storage voltage ~11.4v - same flight time as I was getting/using on 2S.
Does it have the stock motor running on 3s?
Yes stock motor and ESC - only mod is adding the inline voltage converter to supply 7.4v to the stock control board from the ESC.
