Hell yes! Thanks for taking my request man. Funny enough, I got the idea for the question because I had found an old mp3 player from high school. I had rediscovered Ne Obliviscaris "Citidel",as I also used to thoroughly enjoy the album. I had listened to it yesterday and just thought, "The hell is this goofy fantasy prog metal....why did I enjoy this so much?!" And then i had rediscovered some old Slipknot albums like their Self-titled and Iowa and after listening to more extreme genres of music i could hardly stomach it as the riffs became benign and the lyrics became laughable. Not saying one can't enjoy this music or these bands but wow has my music taste changed.

I think that's a sign that you liked stuff for the wrong reasons, personally my music tastes have developed but I still enjoy stuff I enjoyed when I was younger because the reason I liked and still like the music I did is because I like it.

I don't think i could trust any metalhead that didn't enjoy Judas Priest lol, and "Painkiller" is a criminally under-rated record. One of my all time favourite records for sure. Happy to hear you turned around on that as well as Cynic's "Focus", such a remarkable record for its time.

True, you grew a lot as a youtuber and music fan. Still think "In The Nightsight Eclipse" is a stunning album, though. Ne Obliviscaris are pretty good too - not big on prog metal myself but after Opeth and Fates Warning they come to mind as the next best thing in the genre. Motorhead was my biggest conversion - from a total disdain to a favorite band.

I'm still butthurt about you not liking Inquisition lol. Like you said about giving stuff more listens, I feel like you might come around to them the same way Melt Banana grew on you. Dagons vocals are supposed to be weird and alien sounding, it's unique af and fits perfectly with his amazing riffs and Incubus's unrelenting drums, there can be no other way. Normal vocals wouldn't work cause they're not a normal band and don't write normal songs, it's like their own way of art yknow

Very interesting video to watch, especially from someone who never actually got into Ne Obliviscaris's "Citadel". To be honest, I have to say, I can really see how many people would recommend this album to death, and how it perfectly inserts itself into the Prog "Culture", with the virtuoso playing, and whatnot. Honestly? Great album, but just not for me, and I definitely can't shame someone for not liking it. It has its niche.

If you’re digging traditional heavy metal now and haven’t heard it you should give Eternal Champions Armor of Ire a shot. It has some of the best riffs from the past few years.
As for Emperor, I’ve always loved the first two Emperor full lengths. Usually I prefer Nightside because I find Anthems a bit too cheesy but both are amazing.
With Revenge I definitely get what you’re saying but I like them for that sound and if I want aggression they really hit the spot.
I’ve drifted away from listening to Alcest as much because I’m not usually looking for the post metal sound but they do still hold a special place in my heart and I still enjoy them. Shelter was always a difficult one for me though and I don’t know why. It’s just not an album I’ve ever connected with, I don’t think it’s bad and on occasion go back but it’s never clicked.

Ihsahn is fantastic artiste and like any genius he has always tried new things and tried to rediscover himself. I am a huge fan of his solo work too. Anthems is hands down my favorite album. But like any other band they and him have to put up with that first album romance that we fans propagate. A lot of other bands too have fallen victim to this. I get where you are going in your journey. I have been there a few years back. You are looking for new things , new styles more brilliance. And sticking to any particular style just does not do it anymore. It bores you. It bored me. So I took a massive jazz break a few years back. It helped freshen my senses up. Not saying you need a jazz break , but maybe something out of the metal genre. I reveled in Coltrane's brilliance and now am a changed man with new evolved tastes. That said I love the brutal stuff like Revenge and ROTUGF but I find Avante garde Coltrane way more "extreme".

As a thrash/Speed/metal fanatic, welcome on seeing the light. 😉. Although it’s pretty common for metalheads your age to hate it. It’s so removed and from a different age than you experienced. I started with that stuff then moved to more extreme music as it came out. I felt the same way about late 60s rock until later in my life and it just clicked.
Revenge? Yeah they are ok but I always thought they were just an early stripped down Bathory tribute band pushed to the extreme. Never really got the hype. But in their defense I really have to be in the mood for War metal and and when I am I can only do an album here and there.
As a Slayer fan I liked God Hates Us All when it came out, but it hasn’t aged well. I still like a few tracks but it’s not their worst though the one before it is much worse. However Divine Intervention I have really grown to love more than I did when it came out. After Seasons I felt it was a let down but Divine has got better with age.

Another thing I was curious about was; What are your most valuable/prized vinyls in your collection? And what vinyls do you regret not buying and you can no longer either because you can't find it (or limited pressings) or some asshole on Discogs is selling it for some ungodly price? For me, I was fortunate enough to buy the Hotline Miami soundtrack for a reasonable price. I regret not buying the Picture disk Vinyl for City Hunter "Deep Blood".

Right so this is a 3 year old video but Revenge released a new album in 2020 and I gotta say, going back, Revenge post-2010 records only got better production and mixing. I’m biased tho I’m a hardcore kid so I fuck with the more moshy base breakdowns and solos but it’s a sound that’s so crushing and I think they know it. Almost reminds me of Nails. Pre 2010 it’s a sound only diehard Revenge fans could love. Anyway I feel like their sound has been honed and I only look forward to future projects because mixing wise their sound is so fucking unique

  • @speakerdestroyer425

I remember really hating Anaal Nathrakh as a band when I first heard them, I just thought there was too much going on. Bearing in mind at the time I wasn't really that into extreme metal, they just popped up in my recommendations and I decided to give them a listen. Fast forward the clock a few years though and after becoming more accustomed to black metal and grindcore I really liked what I heard, and now I'd definitely consider myself a fan of their music.
Contrastingly I used to really like Bring Me the Horizon, I still love metalcore and deathcore but as far as I'm concerned, BMTH are just trend hoppers and every album they've done is essentially a watered down equivalent of other bands that sound a lot better. My opinion on Bullet for my Valentine is pretty much the same, for that matter.

The song that got me into the darker metal was Ov Fire and the Void by Behemoth, which the first time I heard it I was like "holy shit this is nuts" but now that like 4-5 years has passed, it's pretty mid

  • @THEEVANTHETOON
    @THEEVANTHETOON 5 лет назад +1

I feel the same way towards Ne Obliviscaris as you do. I used to love them, but I gradually lost interest in them. There's nothing in particular I find wrong with them--the vocals are pretty good; they have plenty of neat instrumental sections; the violin is worked in quite well and doesn't feel gimmicky. I just now find their music to be kinda bland and cheesy. As far as progressive metal bands go, they're certainly one of the better ones, but I have so little interest in the ultra-clean, overly-sentimental sound that prog metal bands go for that even when it's done well, it just doesn't do anything for me.
I've always found Revenge to be incredibly boring. I didn't think it was possible to make music so extreme and fast yet so dull. It's so monotonous that I can't listen to them for more than 10 minutes at a time. And even if you're looking for some ultra-abrasive, over-the-top, grindcore-influenced black metal, there are plenty of bands that do it way better (e.g. Diocletian, Dragged into Sunlight).

One of the albums that got me into metal was Maiden's Number of the Beast and I loved the shit out of it as a kid, but when I came back to it a few years ago, outside of a few great tracks like Hallowed Be Thy Name and Run to the Hills, it's quite mediocre and I don't understand why it's still considered to be one of their best, when Di'Anno era and Powerslave and Somewhere in Time are just leagues ahead. Another one was Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness. Wasn't a big fan, but after I revisited it a few months later, it clicked and has since become one of my favorite albums of all time, not just when talking about metal, though Covenant is still the album I'd consider to be their best.

I know I’m gonna get burned at the stake for this, and I’m okay with that, but my opinion massively changed on Burzum’s Filosofem. It used to be my favorite black metal album of all time, until I revisited the genre for the first time in a few years and discovered stuff like Grand Belial’s Key and Hate Forest. Now it’s on a “I won’t skip it if it comes on” basis. Even amongst the super raw part and primitive part of black metal, I’ll now pick something like Carelian Satanist Madness or Carpathian Wolves over Filosofem most days
