MINDANAO Travel Vlog | A Sacrifice to the Spirits 😥 | Talaandig Tribe

  • This Mindanao road trip has been amazing. In this Philippines travel vlog, myself and the rest of the fighter boys end up in Bukidnon after having visited Davao City.
    We meet the Talaandig. A tribe in north central Mindano known for their soil paintings, music, dance, and their history as the peace keepers of the island.
    The Talaandig have a very elaborate initiation ceremonies in which all new visitors must participate. Tabacco and Betelnut is chewed, prayers are said, and a chicken is sacrificed. This is to please their ancestor's spirits before guests enter and potentially "eat their food, and walk on their heads". Datu, the tribe leader guided us through this ceremony when we first arrived.
    As a foreigner in the Philippines, this was an amazing experience for me. The best moments are the ones that challenge you, and this adventure was full of music, food, and pushing my boundaries. I couldn't help keep this travel vlog under 20 minutes. Too much Filipino love and good vibes. I hope you enjoy!

    The longer your vlogs, the better, I say! I've been interested in learning about different people around the world who resist globalization ever since I was a kid, so I found this whole video fascinating. I'd been looking forward to seeing more of this ceremony in particular after seeing bits of it on the other Fighter Boys' channels. Obviously, some people might be put off by the sacrifice of the chicken, but I found the bits you showed and Datu's explanation of what the different parts of the chicken represent quite powerful and beautiful. Loved watching you guys freestyle and sing and dance. I love the sound of the different instruments. That looked like a ridiculous amount of fun! Awesome to see the ceremony and the jam session from your perspective! It honestly blows my mind that your videos continue to get better and better, even after you've set such a high bar for yourself with previous vlogs. Definitely gonna share this one with everyone I know. Loved every moment of it.

    • @fearlessandfar
      @fearlessandfar  6 лет назад +5

      Thanks so much man! I had to use all Bret's footage from the jam session because I was too busy singing, haha. I also really loved what he said about the different parts. At the time I was stressing a bit because the rain was SO LOUD. It seemed to all work out in the end though!

    • @brandonmoore2237
      @brandonmoore2237 6 лет назад +6

      I kinda think the rain added something special to the video! Given what you and Datu were talking about while it was raining, the addition of the rain felt very spiritual, in a way. That probably sounds strange, but that's what I was thinking when I watched that part. It worked very well!

    "Would you participate in the welcoming tradition to visit?"
    I guess, it is rightful to do so. It's all about RESPECT. We may not be so accustomed to their culture, but remember we are only visitors and we have to pay respect to their culture/tradition.
    By the way, that music played by the artist is really beautiful.

    Oh mik mik. You really captured that music and showed the melancholic characteristic of it. It is somewhat haunting, sad...but it has moments of hope. Grabe. I first heard it from Kyles vlog and I have always listened to it in repeat. It was even better that you used the music as an overlay to the ritual because it really felt as if it really came from the heart. Thanks dude for highlighting something I wanted to explore more about this part of the fighterboys trip and the talaandig tribe. Great piece of work documenting this very special part of your journey, I can taste, feel, hear and experience it...even in my own bedroom. Kudos! We really hope to see you back here in Mindanao, or someplace else in the Philippines. The fighterboys have gotten a real following not just from me, but from my friends...neighbors and my family.

    Mike, a powerful message in this video. "We are alike and our beginnings are often similar in that people are born to three basic needs. 1- air to breathe life 2- food sharing is instinctive to know not to waste is factual. By knowing what each part we eat does for survival. So we learn instincts to grow and breathe the air to live and 3- shelter to live and eat in so as not to waste. So we are back to air and the cycle repeats. Really nice piece of art you have made hear. Imagine 50 years from now in the future. You watching what you have achieved in life. Watching Yourself living off the land and making friends among different lands. These things are truly spectacular. Thanks for sharing. #ExperiencesOverPossessions

      Verney Bacdayan agreed!! nice to see how our cordilleran (up north) culture is very much parallel to mindanao culture (down south) two very different directions yet one belief especially on animism proving that no matter how diverse the philippines is in terms of language and beliefs there is still one blood running in our veins. this would be an interesting thesis like how one cordilleran scholar studied the similarities of cordilleran culture to that of the native americans...

    Tatay means Father... we call every elder as Tatay (Tay) and Nanay (Mother) cos in our country everyone is family.
    Loooove the music at the end

    I was there in 1962, things were really different. We were in the jungles and remained there as part of a U.S.Marine war game. The mountain men wore lion cloths and we had to carry 45 pistols for our own safety. The locals built their homes on stilts and the houses were made of bamboo. An old man taught this 17 year old Marine a phrase that I remember and found true all my 79 years. ‘ In every forest there are snakes’ referring to the bad people in every culture and be always aware of your surroundings. That way you will not lose your new iphone

    This is so awesome, MikMik! I am appreciating this very much. And, yes! I would not hesitate to participate in a tribe's tradition. This is a rare footage of a Talaandig welcome ceremony. The fun jamming and the unique sound of the katyapi or lute lessens the intense feeling of the welcoming ritual. The FighterBoys are keeping the tradition alive. Well done, MikMik, and thank you!

    In respect to the local culture and tradition, I would participate in the welcoming tradition. There's a deep sense of meaning with how the datu explained it. I loved the music session and instruments they had. Thanks for creating and sharing this with us.

    I've been watching the fighter boys on and off for a while now and watching this jam session is by far my favourite thing I've seen so far :-) You guys just let those chicken wings take you to new heights and I loved it! And I also love how the Talaandig are keeping their traditions and culture alive, it was incredibly fascinating to watch, hear and see.
