You point on lay a stroke, reload, stroke etc makes great sense and I'm guilty of multiple touches. And, one brush. Wow..which one? I agree about still life objects. Grab it, paint it. Thx.
Just discovered these videos. Love them. thanks so much for making them and posting. Cheers! 3 - 6 months of painting these little still life’s everyday is exactly what I’m going to go for. Thanks again
Going to be what I say with each brush stroke. “ put that paint on with confidence and attitude “. I love it. Thank you. I’m working on a big piece. This is exactly what I needed.
I saw this painting at several places on your vlog and instagram. I love how the light goes through the orange. It's beautiful. Going to try to do something like this.
Stee'rong composition! For me, this is exotic fruit and not the obvious orange b/c of le thick rind. Seeing brush strokes up close is a whole other experience - it invites the viewer to see start/ finish of each brush application. It's a beautiful thing man!
I love to see paintings such as this. When we choose photography to capture for example the same oranges(easy object, nothing fancy everybody can do it, it can be tricky for us to give it some life), we have to decorate the feeling we give with digital instruments. That is the fascinating thing about painting, the feel to our work, the senses come from the palm of our hand. We design the effects. Thus we see it the most in paintings such as this. I hope it is somehow understandable, what I meant. 😄
@@chamberlainpaintings Yeah, pratice makes you better :-) It`s like with anything else in life - you need to DO IT to improve, simple as that ;-) And the size...oh dear...I know this problem...had to force myself, too, to go bigger again, too after working on too many REALLY small pieces...I started with some underwater paintings...so the space you have to fill with detail is not THAT big ;-) Already have some 40x48 inch canvases lurking here in my studio...will not take too long until they hop on my easel ;-)))))))))
Loved this ....those oranges glowed ! Also can see the value of the one stroke paint ...re load I’ll def try this on my plein air thank you love the painterly affect
love this! Beautiful colors. Never thought of mixing something reddish (Alizarin Crimson) with white. Also, I saw the comment below about using a pallet knife. I too am interested in seeing a demonstration of painting with a pallet knife.
Thanks Cari! Maybe I'll try a palette knife painting in the future. I haven't had luck with it in the past but I could try again. It's a great way to get a lot of paint on the canvas. Hope you are well! 😊
You must know Carol Marine! She was a huge inspiration for me when I got back into painting years and years ago. Her brushstrokes and use of colors, pure magic.
Definitely keep doing the still life paintings. I love the small studies and find they have a simple charm to them. I'd love to see you do the "painting a day" thing for a while, maybe while we're still in lockdown with the ability to purchase or auction. By the way, my last painting was of my paint scraper.
I probably won’t do a painting a day, but I’ll definitely do more small paintings. Most of my recent small paintings, including this one, have sold when posted on Instagram. Glad you like!
This could/should be 'landscape and still life-101' and especially for those, like me, less 'definitive' painters. Must say, at 84, I do a lot to see your vids....hit cc, hit speed, hit enlarge etc. But always worth it!!!! finding humor my biggest help in these 'times'. Please get beaches opened up by July! fran NM
I love those saturated colors and the transparent look you got at the thinnest point of the orange. Very nice brush strokes. I have tried the stand oil mixture you mentioned and it seems to take forever to dry and makes the paint very slippery, I must be using too much.
Very informative video . Loved the bold clean look of the picture. Pity you didn't show the reference photo which would have given us the complete approach
I'm in my third year of uni studying visual art, and I'm sure there are plenty of other students that love watching your videos (like me)! Would you ever consider doing a video where you critique some paintings that students or even other plein air artists can submit? After watching your video on Ciallebotte I'd love to hear your opinion on some contemporary works. Could be super interesting and helpful, I love getting feedback from other working artists.
I saw your still life video years ago and was impressed with it. my question now is the orange with the transparent light going through it a different color than the others.. why does it look so much brighter than the other oranges? Is it a different color or is it because it’s surrounded by that blue green that makes it pop!!??
Hi there. Love your videos, your down to earth approach which makes us starting amateurs feeling a little bit less scared about the whole thing. :) As for preparing your panels with gesso (my English isn't the best), what did you say you add to the last coate. Pumace? Is that ground sand? And where do you buy it? Would very much appreciate your reply. Thanks so much.
I definitely love these vids don’t get me wrong but can you do a surfing progression video soon..? I wanna see how far you’ve gotten. Your paintings are beautiful!
I am pretty sure that the Gamblin Burnt Sienna is "real" Burnt Sienna. It actually dries faster and speeds drying in mixes too, not as fast as Burnt Umber but pretty fast.
I tried Gamblin burnt sienna and it wasn't what I was expecting. I think I'll try their transparent red oxide and see how it compares to Utrecht burnt sienna. Both use the same pigment.
Ale , you could always start a painting using your trusty acrylics then finish with oils.( But not other wat round of course) . Little steps. Hope you don't mind the advice from me too Mike.
hey do you use any paint thinners or mediums in your paintings or this and if not how do you make the paint spread and thin so well, thanks for your time :)
I love this painting. Do you take commissions from your subscribers? I don't know how much you'd charge for a small painting but I would love to commission you if I can afford it!

Appreciate the “brush stroke thing” for clean colors and more visual brush work! I’ve got to remember this when painting. Thanks 🙏🏽
This and the metal toaster are my fav little paintings
Thanks Martin, glad you like. 😊

Wonderful, fresh & simple painting. Such fresh colors
I'd love to see more still life paintings. Always love watching. Very inspiring even if I can't paint.
staying loose is my nightmare - thanks for the tricks on color and brushwork.
Going to be what I say with each brush stroke. “ put that paint on with confidence and attitude “. I love it. Thank you. I’m working on a big piece. This is exactly what I needed.
Concise tips. I was specifically looking for brush stroke tips and this was helpful. Any more brushwork tips for us?
Thank you. Very helpful. I appreciate all the information.
Thanks for this video. I'm starting oil painting and I'm drawn to your style.
I saw this painting at several places on your vlog and instagram. I love how the light goes through the orange. It's beautiful. Going to try to do something like this.
I'd love to see more cityscape demos, with a discussion on how you choose the scenes.
😊👍

Oddly, this comment landed on another vid or yours from 2019?? - don't know how that happened - intended for this specific post.
Correction: "not another vid or yours", more specifically, your vid! What a mess.
😂
Thanks! One nice thing about painting this size is the brushwork shows well on Instagram. It’s hard to see the brushwork on larger paintings.
Im just starting to play with small stills as well. Would love to see more! thanks
I love your techniques! Wow
An excellent tutorial Michael! Thanks for helping painters increase their knowledge and skills.
ide love to watch you try and paint something with only a pallet knife.
I’ve tried using a palette knife but prefer the look I get with a brush. Maybe I’ll try again in the future!
Crazy nice work !
love the touches of green for the stems

Yes, I agree. Thanks for your thoughts!
tried this one out-- so much fun and loved how it turned out!
Stills are a fantastic practice - and boy, you were pretty engaged, half a year EVERY day one - that is hard work, respect!!!! :-))))
I improved so much during that time. However, it took a while to paint larger again. After 6 mos of 6x6s a 12x12 seemed huge and intimidating 😂

Yes! I showed my work on DPW many years ago. I think she inspired a lot of people to paint small and often. 😊
it's so hard not to be tight on a very small canvas, but luv your work, brilliant
I'm gonna have to try to paint this now! It's beautiful. I also love that you use just one brush. Makes me feel somehow validated ;)
Hello...Im really enjoying your channel..your paintings are superb too! Greetings from France
Thanks!
please keep these vids coming! just ordered oil painting supplies. 😊 would be so helpful if u could do a deep dive on canvas primers/paint mediums!
Yes! Please do more still lives. My very very favorite is your toaster 😍 but these oranges looks so juicy 🤩
I’ll be doing a few still lifes over the next few weeks. 😊
Thank you for sharing, the tips at the end were helpful!
Love it! Please upload more ❤️
Will do!
Yeah , Harding stuff is mostly pigment. Goes on and on and on. Get your moneys worth for sure.
Another little jewel Mike , thanx for posting bro.
Thanks Dai!
Thank you! Appreciated the tutorial.
I loved this video! As someone who is a complete beginner, what advice do you have for judging value in colour? I struggle the most with values
Squinting helps with seeing value 😊👍
Thank you for all that info!

Thanks Fran! Yes, I hope the beaches open soon. In the meantime I may do a few more still lifes. 😊
I just replicated this and I like how it turned out! Mine's not nearly as good as yours but I still had a lot of fun. Love your work.
😊
Loved this video. Please, more like this one. How did the paint react with the pumiced surface?
The surface is really nice to paint on!

I’ve always been inspired by your style and just your love for painting. :)
Also I think you should do more still life’s of fruits they look pretty cool.
More to come! 😊
Yes! More still lifes!!
Fun. Your explanation is very helpful.
Yes! More! Of everything you do!

Yes, pumice. I believe it’s volcanic rock. It’s ground into a powder. You can order online. Look for “4F pumice”
I definitely love these vids don’t get me wrong but can you do a surfing progression video soon..? I wanna see how far you’ve gotten. Your paintings are beautiful!
Thanks. I’ll do a surf update once the beaches open. Soon I hope!
Beautiful! 🥰
Hi! Which artists would you say most inspire you?
Too many to list! I’m actually mostly inspired by things I see in day to day life. Colors, shadows, etc. 😊
What paint brushes would you recommend for a beginner painter? Looking for some on amazon but I don’t know what to get
I started with natural bristle flats #4,6,8,10
How do you take a good photo of your paintings ? I use my iPhone but the color or the photo never looks the same as my painting
I use my iPhone as well

chamberlainpaintings I think they’ll be almost the same, just a bit towards red.
Look forward to the hearing what you find!

i paint with acrylic paint all the time, would you recommend to change to oils?
Only if it interests you. Can’t hurt to give it a try.

hey do you use any paint thinners or mediums in your paintings or this and if not how do you make the paint spread and thin so well, thanks for your time :)
because I'm new to oil painting and I'm overwhelmed by everything and what to do
I use Liquin as my medium and I clean my brushes with Gamsol 😊

Awesome
