I really don't think they were ever "rivals" Teslas mission statement is "to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport" Tesla embraces all automakers to convert to sustainable transport and has openly stated several times they will partner with them to do so. I don't think that means rivalry, Elon doesn't want to destroy the legacy brands, he just wants them to start being honest, and work together with all of them.

I think the Ford CEO just said even his kids wanted them to be able to use the huge Tesla supercharger network. It just works and in the rare times when it doesn't the Tesla system automatically notifies their technicians so they can fix that location quickly. The various companies that designed the CCS1 standard got something that works but those chargers are not installed to the same locations or in the same quantities nor are they maintained to the same level that Tesla's chargers are. Charger reliability and availability in the locations you want to use a charger is hugely important to the uptake of EVs.

This move makes perfect sense from that standpoint and Ford is ensuring they survive the switch with this move. It also shows how important using the car and network is personally to make decisions, if Jim didn't drive an ev and use the network he would not have made this decisions cause on paper the other networks are pretty comparable to Tesla. Build your own superchargers!

WE (Tesla) supply the battery backup system.
We take a SMALL fixed percentage markup on the energy we supply (at a very competitive rate).
      .....
Then, Tesla uses the Megapacks (overkill!) to provide grid balancing.
      .
They make an absolute fortune doing so.
      .

The Magic Dock is a "dumb" adapter between the Tesla plug, and a CCS1 car socket.
This adapt will be ..... "an adapter between the Tesla plug, and a CCS1 car socket"
      .
The ONLY difference is that "Magic Dock" normally resides in the "dock" of the *charger cabinet* and is released by the charger when the user indicates "not a Tesla" on the App.
The "Ford" adapter will be owned by the user, never connected to the charger cabinet and the "handshake" will probably be done automatically.
It will still have precisely the same "ends". (Tesla Female in, CCS1 male out)

GM is actually in a great place to make the switch. Their only mass produced EV is ending production. It’s probably too late for the first Equinox and Blazer EV models, but by 2025 they can join Ford. If Mary Barra has any sense. And I’m not convinced of that.
Barra (probably): “GM customers love Walmart parking lots and the excitement around the CCS charging systems. Every journey is an adventure where you’re not exactly sure what’s going to happen, and we and our charging partners think that’s a good thing.”

This is how far ahead Tesla is in their planning. They created a massive charging network that's incredibly reliable knowing that it will not only benefit them, but they saw it as another revenue stream by charging other companies to use them. This is free money as it costs Tesla nothing to unlock these for other EVs.

They built a huge network... funded by subsidies from government and other OEMs of course... and then locked all other OEMs out of using it. They also restricted their cars from using the CCS network, because they couldn't have a competing network generating any revenue and taking away revenue from their network, am'i'right? Our government did absolutely nothing to stop what may be the most blatant case of anti-competition (anti-trust) that I've ever seen.

Tesla's have a huge advantage being able to use both. It is really a deciding factor when making a choice for an EV. I like some of the competitors vehicles better, but the charging network is still enough to put a win in the Tesla camp. I am in the decision making process currently and I keep coming back to the navigation and charging as the sticking points. Most of the time I am charging at home and never have to think about nav or charging. But as soon as you have to contemplate that few times a year road trip it is serious pucker factor with the state of CCS charging. I don't see Tesla's having that issue other than we need more chargers in more places off of the beaten paths.
Ford's decision is huge to go with NACS. It can't be emphasized enough. Total respect for the job that Farley is doing. If the other OEM's don't follow suite then they need to be left in the dust.

      My hypothesis?
Within weeks, the following will happen.
      1) There will be "discussion" between government and others regarding the "97% uptime" target, mentioned as part of the charging initiative.
Sanctions, maybe fines may be forthcoming.
      .
      2) Ford will announce they have reached agreement to build Superchargers under license, branded FoMoCo.
They will receive government assistance for doing so (cashflow!!)
They will receive charging income (more cashflow!)
The branding will "advertise" their association with a reliable network.
      .
Tesla will have access (a condition will be those chargers are of NACS and use the CCS adapter for existing Ford vehicles, or have double cables)
      .
      3) What's in it for Tesla?
I believe Tesla will provide Megapack backup for those locations.
Since the chargers will on average be active for maybe 2-3 hours per day, those Megapacks will be leveraged for grid arbitrage. ($$$$$$!)
      .
      4) What's in it for the Government?
They avoid the necessity of bailing out one (more?) of the major legacy automakers.
They push "their initiative" no increase the network.
(Tesla bite their tongue on that one, a small price to pay!)
      .
      5) Customers?
      Choice, reliability, quantity.....
      .
      It's just a thought.....

This move by Ford will help solidify the standard hopefully in favor of the Tesla standard finally which is one of the last pieces of the puzzle to the ev problem.
After a charging standard is adopted by everyone, then it becomes much more seamless to adopt an ev and be able to live with it on a daily basis. CCS was thought to be that standard but it’s just not a reliable and good enough charging solution so switching to the Tesla charging solution which has far more chargers available anyways is truly the best move. It’s also far more reliable, easier to use, works well in the cold and the hot weather, etc. To me Ford making this switch will really up the competition for sure with Ford EVs. Tesla obviously isn’t worried but other automakers should be if they don’t switch to the better standard eventually.

Customers should NOT be locked in a proprietary standard or "ecosystem" (*cough* Apple *cough*). This is a GREAT move by Tesla and Ford!
Customers will have a choice for whatever vehicle they like and will have the freedom to use the Tesla's abundant, convenient, user-friendly and most importantly - working! superchargers.
And Farley said something important - Location. Charger locations in many occasions are plane open parking spaces with nothing nearby. They need to be a place you would WANT to stop and stretch your legs. A simple roof over them is a must! A convenience store or even a vending machine would be great. A place to sit down and eat/drink/relax for a few minutes.

I'm surprised some of these gas station companies haven't start building EV stations. Try and get ahead of the curve before its over saturated with multiple companies. Be cool to see a 7 eleven, circle k, etc.. with EV charging while also being a small store front/hangout area while car charges.
