I saw that these groups are way more popular and get much more views despite being new and I think it's because a bunch of koreaboos are flocking to them (and we know most of these koreaboos are straight and fetishize Korean people and so will flock to any sort of Asian content). So maybe that could be why I see more negativity or odd comments under the less diverse groups because they unfortunately attract the weirdos. Whatever, Michael and all the girls did a fantastic job. Also, this is all just a theory so let me know if you guys agree or disagree. I wanna hear more viewpoints. Maybe I'm reading into it too much.
you're so right! everyone did a great job & it sucks that the comments section was polluted like this. i find this especially true of other dance cover teams that approximate the epectations of Korean idol groups (pretty/handsome, young, thin, etc). it's as if hallyu audiences are coding these dance crews (in this case, dance cover collectives?) as *real* k-pop groups & are holding them those standards; it gets compounded with teams that are predominately East Asian-looking. when they see those who are gender/size/age/beauty-diverse presented as equals to team members who reaffirm their gaze ("she looks just like an idol!"), they just get... mad lol. i think since k-pop has become so mainstreamed & globall audiences are more literate in Korean consumer culutre, there's a greater desire to see reproductions of the aesthetic standards/sensibilities as defined by hallyu media- which is just sad. like if they wanted to watch k-pop idols dance...why not just do that?!? ty for your thought provoking comment!
