📜 History of Onça do Pitangui
Onça do Pitangui has its roots linked to the gold rush, as do many other cities in Minas Gerais. During the 18th century, the region was occupied by bandeirantes who sought precious metals. The city was one of the areas of influence of Vila de Pitangui, one of the most important mining centers in the Captaincy of Minas Gerais.
The origin of the name "Onça do Pitangui" is linked both to the presence of the animal in the region and to the historical connection with the old Comarca de Pitangui. Over time, mining activity declined and the local economy began to depend more on agriculture, livestock farming and small industries.
In 1962, Onça do Pitangui gained political independence, becoming an independent municipality. Since then, it has preserved its historical and cultural identity, maintaining traditions typical of the interior of Minas Gerais.
