Better Breathing: Subclavius Massage

- If you've watched any of my videos, you know that proper breathing is the single most important thing we can do for optimal health. And as a PRI credentialed trainer, my main job is to restore a client's ability to use their left diaphragm as easily as there right diaphragm.
When the left diaphragm is mispositioned and thus drops off as a primary muscle of respiration, we must use compensatory muscle activity to make up for the loss.
The subclavius is one of those accessory muscles that, while not well known, can wreak havoc on someones shoulder, scapula, and ribcage mechanics.
Hey there, my name is Neal Hallinan.
The purpose of this channel is to help people understand and resolve chronic muscular and joint pain, primarily through the discipline of Postural Restoration.
As someone who lived with chronic pain for many years of my life, I know how debilitating and isolating it can be. But I also know it can be resolved.
I hold the following credentials:
Postural Restoration Trained (PRT)
Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS)
Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
Amateur Historian (AH, my own self-designation)
I live and work in the great state of New Jersey, USA.

Any ghosts in your apartment? 😂
I massaged my subclavius as you showed in the video and I felt immediately release on my right neck and right upper back, I started to feel right rhomboid and right lower trap and my right ribs expands more when I inhaled. I am coming from the right bc pattern video, Thank you so much for your work 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless you!
YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW WONDERFUL THIS EXPLANATION WAS!!! I KNOW I'M LATE TO THIS VIDEO, BUT THANK YOU FOR IT! 👏👏👏
Thank for your great videos. Packed with great rare info and straight to the point.
Hi Neal, I love your content. Thank you .
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment!
Very informative and well done. I have a cat that goes crazy for tummy rubs. [More chest than tummy] He gets two 1/2 hour sessions a day. I finally decided to see what was so great about them. I laid down on the bed on my left side and massaged [deep finger massage] my man breast, the one over my heart. Did it for 15 minutes and then laid on my other side and did the other breast. After having completed the 30-minute exercise I was amazed at how relaxed my whole body was and how clear my breathing had become. A simple exercise you do yourself. Now I understand why this massage works. Thanks for the video. P*E*A*C*E
Great content you have really got me thinking. Every video you put out is priceless.
Thank you, Catalina.
Thanks Neal!
Thank you. I definitely needed this - seemingly on both sides - and it seems, as well as easing my breathing, to have improved my vision.
That could happen. Anything that allows your body to relax, and sense the ground better, can change your vision.
Thank you Neal!
You are saving my life
Great video and tips
Thank you. Subclavius can be a big deal for such a small muscle.
I was looking for some rib opening at upper area for my pelvic and reformer work. I will use this on my roll out day! Thanks!
You're very welcome, Cassia.
Very effective massage , thanks❤🎉
Thanks for information
Amazing
This is some very interesting and valuable information. Do you have anything on knocked knees/knee valgus?
Thank you, I have that problem and also I noticed the distance on the sides between rib cage and pelvis is short as use to be, could you please give some recommendations how to improve that situation? Thank you very much!
Thanks for that. My left is worst can I massage left as well? Thanks
I definite am tight here too. A couple years ago my right shoulder was stuck forward and I didn’t know it.
How did you fix it? I have exactly the same for years now, can't even reach behind my back properly! Nothing I try seems to help! Would be v grateful if you could let me know what helped you
In scoliosis should be release from one side only ?
Was watching Ron hruskja talk about superior T 4 syndrome and he mentioned 2 techniques a superior t4 technique and a subclavius release technique. Could you do a video about this thanks.
I sprained my SC joint and had some chest wall trauma and my right chest hurted for six months and am barley progressing.
Is the TV ok? :D Good video btw
Yes, the TV survived!
Liked it a lot!!!! Do you think a tight subclavius can be also the reason why the first rib displaces on the back?
Not really sure. Honestly, I don't have any experience with rib displacement.
@@NealHallinan how odd, it is the first rib, that slightly moves and it is like a knife pain, nevertheless thanks for answering, I really like your videos, they are very clever.
@@NealHallinan thank you. Very interesting, your videos
Man is there any better feeling than successfully releasing a tight subclavius? Over time you might forget that it's an area thats causing so much restriction (sleeping on your right side on your right shoulder can activate the subclavius if you forget to massage it loose in the morning or maybe before bed.)
Do you recommend a specific posture when sitting? I feel like I am melting in my chair when I sit, and I think that messes with my PRI recovery.
same
Mine is tight on left side my 1st rib is slightly elevated
This pertains to my left scm/scalenes etc., that shoulder is higher then the right , more anterior/forward . when I breath that left side collarbone/neck area rise and is tense. This got worse after doing some of your exercises and me trying to concentrate on proper breathing. Unfortunately though, trying to not have this happen while trying to focus on breathing properly is truly difficult. I don’t have any pri therapists near me. Is this normal to have this happen on the opposite side versus what you are saying is the right side. Are there any cues /exercises you know of of how to correct this? There is a possibility I have an elevated first rib on the left side according to my pt.
All your symptoms sound exactly like might. Mine is also only on one side, my left. Have you found any relief? I know I have very tight pec muscles, serratus anterior, shoulder pulled forward and down, LOTS of trigger points in my scm which now causes dizziness as well. Anything you’ve found to help you would help! I’ve started working my scm and pecs a lot which has improved some
@@NeelSea still working on it. How about you?
Hi Neal. Would an altered neck curve have any influence on how this muscle works? Thanks.
That's possible, likely even.
@@NealHallinan Thank you Neal.
What if you have a cervical rib C-7, plus hEDS and CCI ?
Why is one subclavius higher than other? Is it because of first rib pressing?
Yes. It is due to the position of the first rib, clavicle, and scapula.
Could this be the reason I'm having trouble not breathing into my neck when doing the 90/90?
It's possible.
Yep! Mines tight!😆
sorry about ur tv
Fuck..that worked
