Those super high prices you see online are a scam. It was people who owed a grading company posting graded tapes for sale and then bidding on them themselves. And of course they didn't pay themselves. And no one would complain no one payed. To trick people into sending in their tapes to get them graded.
If this is true, we hope the truth comes out. However, we know collectors personally who have spent $20,000-$50,000 on individual VHS tapes. So there are legitimate sales on Goldin and Heritage.
Keep in mind that the high price of $80 means it was likely a video rental copy. The reason you had to pay blockbuster $80 for a tape is because they came with a special rental license. You cant just open up a rental shop and rent your movies for money. There is a personal copy (for single enjoyment) and then ones for those who make money off rentals. People may say "i should be able to do whatever i want", but thats not how capitalism works. If that were true, stores could buy one cd, and then rip off the artist by burning cds. So yes some tapes were more expensive.
Yeah and this dude making the video is just trying to start people into a new grift. Collectors who hoard up these things while having no real enthusiasm over it, but just to make a quick buck are scumbags.
Grading companies like Rewind, Beckett, and CGC have VERY strict assessment procedures to ensure the plastic wrapping is authentic. We have actually been denied submitted VHS tapes to Rewind and CGC, the plastic was resealed. We will do another video covering this topic soon. Thank you for the inspiration.
There have been many big sales for CIB video games over the past 3 years. A CIB NES Super Mario CGC 9.0 recently sold in August 2024 for $32,500. Another CIB NES Super Mario CGC 8.0 copy sold for $16,250 2 weeks ago. Always make sure to DYOR.
When he turns the tapes over, you can see a mark on the plastic, RCA on Ghostbusters and Paramount on Indiana Jones. Those marks are put there by the distribution studio to mark original wrap.
Not all studios use watermark on first print. Look for stickers underneath the wrap, that means it's been opened before. Or even wear underneath the plastic and there's no wear on the plastic
@@Emeric62 CGC, Rewind, and Beckett will EASILY recognize the tape as a reseal. We have personally been denied on resealed tapes and we will create a video on this soon. If you'd like to test this however, please keep us posted on your results!
This is not accurate at all. First off all those insane eBay listings you see for 10000 dollars copies of the lion king are inflated. No one is paying that much, these tapes were massively produced, video games were a much much smaller market back then and developed a lifestyle and cult following around them. Everyone and their grandma had a vhs player, everyone on the planet watches movies, everyone saw ghost busters, Zelda was popular yes but not nearly to the same degree, also nearly everyone who owned Zelda when it came out was a kid who opened it and played it that’s why it’s so exceedingly rare to see a sealed copy. VHS tapes and NES games were the same era, do you see thousands and thousands of used VHS stores like you do used retro games stores? Have you even seen one? Tapes are worthless, leave them for the people who enjoy collecting them, this will never be a wise investment.
Respectfully disagree. We never referenced fake sales on eBay, including those inflated Lion King tapes, which I'm presuming you are referencing the clamshell diamond collection. First Print CIB video games are selling for a high premium and it's not easy to find high grade first print VHS tapes of grail films with the original plastic. Rare and high demand sealed first print VHS tapes are selling for thousands. This is a fact. Could CIB VHS hit the same levels as CIB video games? Time will tell.
@ I’ll eat my words if you turn out to be right. I agree there is a market for anything these days but what about my point about retro video game stores? There is not the same market for VHS’s which you compared it to, thoughts on that?
@ not sure if we’ll see a retro VHS shops similar to games, but we have definitely been to VHS stores in CA. That being said, everyone loves movies. So this doesn’t make the market less desirable. Collecting and investing in your favorite movies is a very cool and fun opportunity.
No, later prints usually have watermarks too. Identifying first print watermarks is key, which are typically different from later prints, So it's important to know the difference before purchasing. We'll create a video covering this topic soon!

thoughts on sealed cds? I have a bunch if you're interested of 90's grunge.
We think they have fantastic upside. We have been buying sealed first albums from many popular artists.

Bad example as burning cds would violate the copyright. Renting the copy I buy out would nor would giving it to someone.
I bought a copy of _Star Wars_ on Beta in the 1980s. It says Video Rental Library on it.

@@ComicsandCrypto Right. Those are awful old comps for this type of market.
@@amtracktrack4963 a sale from 2 weeks ago is a bad comp? 🤔
How can someone tell if the shrink wrap is original if it's clear?

sealed 23 k,, opened $3
Xiaomi sealing machine $8
It was a scam by guys who owed grading companies. They bid up their own graded tapes to make people send in their tapes to be graded.

Definitely not for the grails. For example, if you can find a 1982 VHS first print CIB of Star Wars for $3, please let us know!

Great video, thank you! Do only first print VHS have water marks??
No, you can get factory watermarks on reprints. But the watermark proves its factory sealed, and not just someone's cheap reseal
