We did that to get grass to grow and it worked so well. We went to an old saw mill and brought it back in truckloads. Of course, we were told to get it from the older area not the newer area for better results. It did so well that we planted some tomatoes and cayenne and jalapeno pepper beds too. I never would've thought it would've been that effective. Probably the best soil we ever could've gotten.

Dont know if it's been mentioned however, being a 3rd generation American farmers daughter my grandfather and my father taught me how to keep hand tools like shovels, rakes, hand trowels, etc any tools that your putting in or using soil, cement, gravel. They had buckets and bins loaded with a mixture of sand and regular motor oil so that it looked like wet sand consistency, clean what dirt or debris off the tool e en to go as far as wash with water hose, and then stick that tool onto the sand bucket or barrel up to the wooden handle and leave it in there until your needed it again. The sand mixture cleaned any remainder debris and the oil kept the tool from rusting and remain its sharpness. Another benefit to this is when you used the tool the next time debris didnt stick to the tool so much. Your shovel looks like it could use this method. I'm 58 years old and I still have tools that were handed down to me by dad and grandpa that look almost new. To this day we still live and farm the original homestead that's 30 acres. Rotate crops, add fertilizer from the cows and horses and other animals, along with other nutrients to keep the soil healthy and productive. Like you we have what ever you can think of planted in our gardens and orchard. Love watching others maintaining their homesteads the cold way and teaching the new generation how to live off the land. Its lessons like this I've chosen to instill in my children and now grandchildren just the way I was taught. Nothing better than sitting at a table full of homegrown food and a fresh pitcher of milk or juice. And enjoy the fruits of yuh our labor. And like you, we dont have to go to a fancy gym to maintain a healthy body and muscles. Love watching the family working together making memories that will never be forgotten.🚜🗺🌎👨‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍👧‍👦

Suggestion: I see all those trees around your property. Get some KID energy, and get them to rake all those leaves, twigs, fallen bark, and even some of the topsoil into piles. Then make Compost piles out of them by seeding them with all the chicken and goat poop you can. Then just allow nature to do it's trick until next spring. Then put it all through a chipper/shredder (or even an old lawn mower if a chipper isn't in your budget). Then spread it as a compost on top of your beds to help keep the weeds down, add nutrients to the soil, and make a nice Topping for seedlets transferred into it in spring. Just MHO. Blessings being sent your way!
