  • In September 2018 three guest speakers came to the home of the Archive of Recorded Church Music in Malvern, to mark the 15th anniversary of the Archive. In his talk, entitled 'Sounds Amazing!', Barry Rose unearthed some unique treasures from his personal sound archive and looked back over a long career as the organist of one church and three cathedrals, and a 20-year span as Religious Music Adviser to the BBC.

How can we ever thank you, ARCM, for this fabulous upload. It is such a gem........as is the upload of the Purcell concert from Westminster Abbey. Thank you for all you do.

It really is an outstanding talk and we must, of course, thank Barry Rose himself for allowing us to post the video of his talk which I filmed in the church.

@@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusic Thank you for sharing it. My first organ teacher was John Dexter, a chorister under Dr Rose at Guildford. My 2nd (and final)organ teacher was Geraint Bowen now at Hereford, so I am off to listen to Dr Massey. Your channel is so wonderful!

Wow, indeed thank you ARCM and Dr Rose for sharing this lecture. Absolutely spell-binding. I have only had about 10 minutes under Dr Rose's metaphorical baton during a recording session at Blackburn where our regular director was in the listening booth and Dr Rose led the choir for a balance check. Those 10 mins were as vital as any I have had in my many years of choral experience.

I really enjoyed the words of both Roy Massey and Barry Rose, both of whose choir recordings I come back to time and time again. Thankyou.

A truly gifted man and one of the best choral conductors the UK has ever seen and heard. He really knew how to make a choir sound exciting to listen to.

I was in the audience for this; first time I ever heard Wesley's In Exitu Israel (at 22:36) , which has now gone on to be my all time favourite piece!

He's supposed to be 84 but he looks at least 25 years younger and sounds almost exactly as he sounded in his 30s... Age, apparently, shall not weary them!

I would have loved to study with him. However, I was too poor to live in England on my own, being a native from Kentucky USA. Instead, I studied with Gilbert MacFarlane at Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville, KY. It was the best decision I ever made. Later, I studied with Eric Routley, James Litton, George Guest, Michael Nicholson, George Thalben-Ball and David Willcocks before his death. I was also a very talented violist and studied with real great world class musicians and conducting with Dr. Richard Lert (godson of Brahms). I WISH SOMEONE WOULD PUBLISH A COMPLETE BOOK OF AND ALL ABOUT, ALL THE CHOIRMASTERS OF THE UK.

Please excuse any tendency towards vulgarity.......but I have just heard that Worcester have appointed a new Organist. In the Rose vein, I do hope that the new organist at Worcester doesn't form a record company with the Organist Titulaire of Liverpool!
